Childhood stress impairs social function through AVP-dependent mechanisms.

Impaired social function is a core feature of many psychiatric illnesses. Adverse experiences during childhood increase risk for mental illness, however it is currently unclear whether stress early in life plays a direct role in the development of social difficulties. Using a rat model of pre-pubertal stress (PPS), we investigated effects on social behaviour, oxytocin and arginine vasopressin (AVP) in the periphery (plasma) and centrally in the paraventricular and supraoptic hypothalamic nuclei. We also explored social performance and AVP expression (plasma) in participants with borderline per

[Gambling disorder and imputability: from the nosographic revision to an expanded forensic assessment].

The gambling disorder (GD in the DSM-5) is an example of how the evolution of research has contributed to the nosographic review of complex psychopathological conditions, such as behavioral addictions, likewise other personality pathologies. Recently, the scientific and doctrinal debate has also affected the controversial issue of imputability, to assess in what terms this diagnostic picture can acquire the value of "infirmity" such as to undermine the ability to understand and the will of a subject under evaluation. However, it is always necessary to translate the clinical, and experimental,

Bipolar Disorder and/or Creative Bipolarity: Robert Schumann's Exemplary Psychopathology - Combining Symptomatological and Psychosocial Perspectives with Creativity Research.

The psychopathological condition of Robert Schumann has been a prominent object of study in psychiatry since his hospitalization in 1854. Renowned psychiatrists have diagnosed Schumann with syphilis, schizophrenia, and bipolar and personality disorders. Until today, these analyses of his symptomatology have led to contradictory results. Recent discussion has suggested that his hospitalization was due to professional failure and separation wishes on the part of his wife, her family, and her friends. In line with this hypothesis is the opinion that the separation insisted upon by Clara Schumann

Clinical characteristics associated with premature termination from outpatient psychotherapy for anorexia nervosa.

AIM: The literature on clinical characteristics associated with premature termination of treatment (PTT) is beset with conflicting and non-replicated findings. This study explores clinical characteristics potentially associated with PTT in a randomised controlled outpatient psychotherapy trial for anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: Participants were 56 women aged 17-40 years with spectrum AN. The completer group (n = 35) included those completing at least 15/20 planned sessions with the remainder of the sample comprising the PTT group (n = 21). Variables examined included demographic factors, ps

Predicting impulsive self-injurious behavior in a sample of adult women.

Different types of self-injury have been classified as reflecting impulsive and compulsive characteristics (article by Simeon and Favazza [Self-injurious Behaviors: Assessment and Treatment {pp 1-28}. Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc, 2001]). The current research used a prospective design to evaluate whether there is a progression between these different types of self-injurious behaviors (SIB) over time. Support was found for a progression from compulsive SIB (including hair pulling, nail-biting, skin picking, scratching, and preventing wounds from healing) to impulsive SIB

Identifying and managing nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior in the primary care setting.

PURPOSE: To provide an overview of nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSIB) for nurse practitioners (NPs) who see patients with this complex phenomenon in primary care settings. DATA SOURCES: Selected research and clinical reviews. CONCLUSIONS: NSSIB is characterized as a low-lethality, repetitive act that can alter or cause damage to the body tissue. Among researchers and those who work directly with young people, there is a general consensus that NSSIB is increasing in prevalence. Unfortunately, NPs often view self-injuring patients negatively, likely because of a lack of knowledge as t

A preliminary study of the relation between trauma symptoms and emerging BPD in adolescent inpatients.

The relation between trauma and borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been studied in great detail with adults, but few studies have examined this link in adolescents. Furthermore, virtually nothing is known about how different aspects of trauma relate to BPD and whether trauma symptoms reflect actual trauma history in adolescents diagnosed with BPD. Using a sample of 147 adolescent psychiatric inpatients, the authors examined the concurrent link between trauma symptoms, trauma history, and BPD. Findings suggest that adolescents with BPD are more likely than their non-BPD counterparts to h

Invited commentary: co-occurring health conditions among women living with profound life challenges.

People challenged by homelessness are living with several losses including the loss of a home, employment, economic security, health or well-being, and personal security. Assistance programs for people who are homeless consist of housing, emergency shelter, food services, employment assistance, peer support, medical care, and mental health services. An article by Riley et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2011;175(5):515-522) appearing in this issue of the Journal examines the relation between basic subsistence needs and health outcomes in a cohort of 129 human immunodeficiency virus-infected women who wer

Low non-oxidative glucose metabolism and violent offending: an 8-year prospective follow-up study.

Violent offenders have abnormalities in their glucose metabolism as indicated by decreased glucose uptake in their prefrontal cortex and a low blood glucose nadir in the glucose tolerance test. We tested the hypothesis that low non-oxidative glucose metabolism (NOG) predicts forthcoming violent offending among antisocial males. Glucose metabolism was measured using the insulin clamp method among 49 impulsive, violent, antisocial offenders during a forensic psychiatric examination. Those offenders who committed at least one new violent crime during the 8-year follow-up had a mean NOG of 1.4 sta

[A case of self-circumcision].

A 29-year-old bachelor had immigrated from Uzbekistan to Israel 2 years before to improve his economic situation. He began drinking at the age of 20, and increased to 1-1.5 bottles of vodka a day. He was unable to keep a job more than a few months. When called up for limited military service, he thought that the army might be a solution for his employment problem. However, he felt that he would not be able to integrate into the army, and later into Israeli society, unless he was circumcised. The Ministry of Religion deferred his request for a religious circumcision because they did not conside

Psychiatric Assistance Dog Use for People Living With Mental Health Disorders.

A psychiatric assistance dog (PAD) is a service dog that is trained to assist its handler (owner) who has been diagnosed with a mental health condition such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Literature searches reveal that little is known about the population of people who own PADs, the types of dogs used or the functions they provide. One third (n = 199) of PAD owners in Australia registered with the charity "mindDog" participated in an online survey designed to better understand the person and dog team. Participants learned abo

Neurobiological and psychopharmacological basis in the therapy of bulimia and anorexia.

1. Eating disorders can be found in several psychiatric pathologies: schizophrenia, delusional disorder (somatic type), bipolar disorders, major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, somatization disorder and conversion disorder. 2. Although their clinical features have been defined, relatively little is known about the role of neurobiological patterns in the pathogenesis of these disorders. Several CNS neurotransmitters and neuromodulators are involved in the regulation of eating behavior in animals and have been implicat

Mania Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Mania is an uncommon, but debilitating, psychiatric occurrence following TBI. The literature on mania following TBI is largely limited to case reports and case series. In the present review, the investigators describe the clinical, diagnostic, and treatment characteristics of mania following TBI. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO was conducted for English-language studies published from 1980 to July 15, 2021. The included studies provided the required individual primary

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of emotion regulation on cortisol.

UNLABELLED: It is generally acknowledged that hormones are implicated in socioemotional behavior, yet little is known about the role of hormones in the context of emotion regulation. The aims of the present review and meta-analysis were to review and synthesize the available evidence pertaining to the effect of emotion regulation instructions on hormones, and to investigate whether this effect varies according to: type of hormone, context (e.g., emotion-induction procedure), emotion regulation characteristics (e.g., emotion regulation strategy), and presence and type of psychiatric disorder. The Depression Treatment Cascade: Disparities by Alcohol Use, Drug Use, and Panic Symptoms Among Patients in Routine HIV Care in the United States.

Little is known about disparities in depression prevalence, treatment, and remission by psychiatric comorbidities and substance use among persons living with HIV (PLWH). We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in a large cohort of PLWH in routine care and analyzed conditional probabilities of having an indication for depression treatment, receiving treatment, receiving indicated treatment adjustments, and achieving remission, stratified by alcohol use, illicit drug use, and panic symptoms. Overall, 34.7% (95% CI 33.9-35.5%) of participants had an indication for depression treatment and of thes

The longitudinal polymorphism of bipolar I disorders and its theoretical implications.

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal course of bipolar I disorders is often characterized by a polymorphism, which means that different kinds of episodes develop during the illness. This study investigated the characteristics, similarities and differences of the long-term course of bipolar I patients regarding the dominance of various kinds of episodes. METHODS: One hundred eighty-two (182) patients with DSM-IV bipolar I disorder were longitudinally investigated (approximately 17 years duration of the illness) with standardized instruments. The dominance of mood, schizo-affective and schizophreniform
