Prescribing trends and clinical impact of calcium salt supplements in musculoskeletal pain: evidence from a multi-center retrospective analysis in India (TRACE study).

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D₃ deficiency is highly prevalent in India and frequently linked, nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. Adequate calcium and vitamin D₃ intake is essential for maintaining bone integrity and neuromuscular function, as vitamin D₃ facilitates calcium absorption and metabolism. However, real-world data on calcium carbonate-based supplementation practices and related clinical outcomes remain limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the real-world prescription trends and corresponding clinical and biochemical changes observed among patients with musculoskeletal pain. METHOD

Barriers for general practitioners in post-stroke follow-up within a fragmented healthcare system in Sweden - a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Secondary medical prevention after stroke is effective and well evidenced, making long-term follow-up crucial. This follow-up is mainly made by general practitioners (GPs) in Sweden. Low target achievement and up to fourfold practice variation in dispensation of secondary preventive drugs between different primary care units in Region Stockholm has been described. Although several factors in individual practices have been observed to be associated with insufficient target achievements, the underlying reasons for this variation are unclear. OBJECTIVES: To explore the perspectives o

Pharmacological treatment of late-life major depressive disorder - Results from the AMSP drug surveillance program from 2007 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Late-life depression (LLD) is a frequent and debilitating condition associated with higher somatic comorbidity and increased medication burden. Although antidepressant treatment is widely used, evidence on real-world prescribing patterns and age-related differences in inpatient settings remains limited. Understanding such patterns is essential to improve safety and effectiveness of pharmacological management in older adults with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Data were obtained from the "Arzneimittelsicherheit in der Psychiatrie" (AMSP) drug surveillance program, coveri

Exploring pediatricians' off-label prescribing behavior in China: A theory of planned behavior-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Off-label prescribing, use of medications outside approved indications, dosages, administration routes, or age groups is common in pediatric clinical practice, largely because of the lack of high-quality clinical trials in children. Although such prescriptions can meet urgent therapeutic needs, particularly in complex or rare pediatric conditions, they also raise significant concerns regarding safety, effectiveness, and medicolegal liability. Limited research has examined the behavioral factors that influence pediatricians' decisions to prescribe off-label drugs. AIM: This study

Disparities in Healthcare Providers' Substance Use Detection Practices for Pregnant Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assess providers' substance use screening/testing practices in patient care and identify disparities in their application. We hypothesized that patient race and social vulnerability (SV) are independently and jointly associated with increased rates of provider self-reported substance use screening/testing. METHODS: A 2 × 2 factorial vignette design was used to survey OB/GYN, Midwifery, and Family Medicine providers. The patients' age and medical characteristics were identical in each vignette, but two elements varied dichotomously: (1) the patient's race (Black vs. White) and (2

Current practice in perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis for clean surgical procedures among pediatric urologists.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are rare but important complications in pediatric urologic surgery. While surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) has led to a decrease in SSIs, it may be unnecessary for Class I/Clean surgical cases. In 2019 the American Urological Association (AUA) Best Practice Statements (BPS) on urologic procedures and antimicrobial prophylaxis were updated advising that routine antimicrobial prophylaxis for Class I cases may not be necessary. The objectives of this study were to evaluate current practices regarding SAP for Class I procedures among pediatric uro

Factors Contributing to Opioid Overprescribing at Surgical Discharge.

INTRODUCTION: Opioids remain the gold standard for treating acute pain, whereas overprescribing occurs regularly in the postoperative setting with little clinical guidance. The objective of this study is to examine whether the length of surgery is an independent risk factor for opioid overprescribing at discharge. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study to determine if there is an association between the length of surgery and overprescribed opioids. The setting was an academic medical center located in the southern region of the United States - an adult level-one trauma cente
