Although requests for gluteal implants are unusual in the United States, the use of silicone implants for buttock cosmesis has been described. Complications of this procedure have rarely been reported. There are no reports of long-term follow-up in these patients. We reviewed case histories of 40 pediatric-sized developmentally disabled patients who had previously participated in a study comparing the Nissen fundoplication with the Angelchik prosthesis for the surgical treatment of severe gastroesophageal reflux. Five of these patients had experienced erosions of the prosthesis into the gastrointestinal tract. Facial nerve paralysis with orbicularis muscle palsy can result in serious corneal complications, such as exposure, ulceration, and perforation. Eyelid springs have been used for patients with orbicularis muscle palsy to provide corneal protection while maintaining vision by restoring some kinetic eyelid function. A total of 46 patients with reflex bladder activity who failed conservative treatment underwent bladder augmentation in some cases in combination with the implantation of an artificial sphincter. With the advent of totally implantable hearing aids, the question of the impact of the choice of implantation site on microphone function has yet to be fully addressed. We investigated the effects of skin thickness on microphone function over a 2-week period in a porcine model. Sound attenuation was found to be directly proportional to skin thickness within the range of 0.5 to 3.0 mm. Treatment of 41 morbidly obese patients with a 3.34 mega joule diet has been compared with the same dietary regime together with an intragastric balloon. After eight weeks of closely supervised dietary regime a free floating silicone intragastric balloon with a capacity of 500 ml was inserted and the patient advised to adhere to the same diet for a further eight weeks. The double-disk occluding device suitable for use in infants and children with patent ductus arteriosus, developed by Rashkind and Mullins, has been available to this institution since December 1987 on an investigational basis. We report 2 cases of unilateral and bilateral excision of pubic bone tumors (chondrosarcoma and giant cell tumor). Postoperative stress incontinence was corrected by implantation of an artificial sphincter (AMS800) following which both patients were continent. The etiology of the incontinence was lack of bladder and urethral support, which was not correctable by bladder neck suspension procedures.
