Equitable implementation of lung cancer screening: avoiding its potential to mirror existing inequities among people who use tobacco.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, but the advent of lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography offers a tremendous opportunity to improve lung cancer outcomes. Unfortunately, implementation of lung cancer screening has been hampered by substantial barriers and remains suboptimal. Specifically, the commentary emphasizes the intersectionality of smoking history and several important sociodemographic characteristics and identities that should inform lung cancer screening outreach and engagement efforts, including socioeconomic considerations (e.g., health in

Smoke-Free Policies and Resident Turnover: An Evaluation in Massachusetts Public Housing From 2009‒2018.

INTRODUCTION: Smoke-free policies (SFP) in multi-unit housing are a promising tool for reducing exposure to tobacco smoke among residents. Concerns about increased housing instability due to voluntary or involuntary transitions induced by SFPs have been a primary barrier to greater widespread adoption. The impact of SFP implementation on transitions out of public housing in federally funded public housing authorities in Massachusetts was evaluated. METHODS: Tenancy data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development were used to determine the time from admission to transitioning out of

Nebulization of PEGylated recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I using vibrating membrane nebulizers: A technical feasibility study.

Recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I (rhDNase, Pulmozyme®) is the most frequently used mucolytic agent for the symptomatic treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease. Conjugation of rhDNase to polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been shown to greatly prolong its residence time in the lungs and improve its therapeutic efficacy in mice. To present an added value over current rhDNase treatment, PEGylated rhDNase needs to be efficiently and less frequently administrated by aerosolization and possibly at higher concentrations than existing rhDNase. In this study, the effects of PEGylation on the the

Motility provides specific adhesion patterns and improves Listeria monocytogenes invasion into human HEp-2 cells.

Listeria monocytogenes is motile at 22°C and non-motile at 37°C. In contrast, expression of L. monocytogenes virulence factors is low at 22°C and up-regulated at 37°C. Here, we studied a character of L. monocytogenes near surface swimming (NSS) motility and its effects on adhesion patterns and invasion into epithelial cells. L. monocytogenes and its saprophytic counterpart L. innocua both grown at 22°C showed similar NSS characteristics including individual velocities, trajectory lengths, residence times, and an asymmetric distribution of velocity directions. Similar NSS patterns correlated wi

Risk factors of HIV and variation in access to clean needles among people who inject drugs in Pakistan.

We identified key risk factors for HIV among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Pakistan and explored access to free clean needles. Multivariable logistic regression was used to investigate associations between HIV prevalence and demographic, behavioral, and socio-economic characteristics of PWID. Data came from the Government of Pakistan's Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance (IBBS) Round 5 (2016-17; 14 cities). A secondary analysis investigated associations with reported access to clean needles. Unweighted HIV prevalence among 4,062 PWID (99% male) was 21.0%. Longer injecting dur

Early-Stage Glottic Carcinoma in the United States: Demographics and Treatment Choice.

OBJECTIVE: Limited investigation of factors potentially contributing to treatment choice in early-stage glottic carcinoma (EGC) has been performed with large-scale data. The National Cancer Database (NCDB) represents >72% of all new cancer cases in the United States. We hypothesized that NCDB variables may lend insight into treatment decisions between surgery and radiation for EGC. METHODS: The NCDB was queried for all cases of T1-2  N0  M0 glottic carcinoma from 2004 to 2016. We used multivariable logistic regression analysis to examine factors associated with first-line treatment modality:

Preclinical Efficacy and Anti-Inflammatory Mechanisms of Action of the Bruton Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Rilzabrutinib for Immune-Mediated Disease.

Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) is expressed in B cells and innate immune cells, acting as an essential signaling element in multiple immune cell pathways. Selective BTK inhibition has the potential to target multiple immune-mediated disease pathways. Rilzabrutinib is an oral, reversible, covalent BTK inhibitor designed for immune-mediated diseases. We examined the pharmacodynamic profile of rilzabrutinib and its preclinical mechanisms of action. In addition to potent and selective BTK enzyme and cellular activity, rilzabrutinib inhibited activation and inflammatory activities of B cells and inna
