Beliefs about sleep: links with ruminations, nightmare, and anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Dysfunctional cognitions related to sleep play a major role in insomnia but also in nightmares. Moreover, they are closely related to anxiety. To our knowledge, no study has probed the impact of non-constructive ruminations on these dimensions in their harmful interplay with sleep. The aim of this study is to provide new insights into the processes underlying the dysfunctional cognitions-insomnia relationship. METHOD: Four hundred twenty nine French participants completed an anonymous online survey using Qualtrics® software. For the assessment of variables, we used the Mini Cambrid…

Associations between Sleep, Depression, and Cognitive Performance in Adolescence.

The relevance of cognitive performance during adolescence requires further studies that analyze potential associated factors. This study aimed to analyze inductive reasoning, reading comprehension, and mathematical thinking (problem-solving and number and calculation) in relation to sleep and depression in 244 students aged 12-17 years (47.6% boys and 52.4% girls). Daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, dysthymia, and euthymia (state and trait) were assessed by self-reported questionnaires. Moreover, correlations between these variables and cognitive performance, and differences depending on socio…

Network analysis of internet addiction and sleep disturbance symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) is a behavioral addiction to problematic internet use. IA is associated with poorer sleep quality. Few studies to date, however, have explored the interactions between symptoms of IA and symptoms of sleep disturbance. This study uses network analysis to identify bridge symptoms by analyzing these interactions in a large sample of students. METHOD: We recruited 1977 university students to participate in our study. Each student completed the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We used these collected data for network a…

Relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease and objective sleep quality.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To objectively characterize (1) the relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and sleep quality, and (2) the influence of sleep position on this relationship, using in-laboratory polysomnography. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed first-night diagnostic in-laboratory polysomnography data for 3411 patients (median age 55 years; 48% male). Medication use and medical condition data were obtained through self-reported questionnaires. Associations between sleep quality and the presence of GERD, and the influence of sleep position on these associations, were an…

Parasomnias and Sleep-Related Movement Disorders in Older Adults.

Sleep paralysis is rare in the elderly but may occur particularly in families suffering from this phenomenon. In a minority of patients with disorders of arousal, the episodes persist until the age of 70. Zolpidem and other medications may induce sleepwalking and sleep eating-related syndrome. Most patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) eventually develop Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Anti-IgLON5 disease includes abnormal behaviors in both nonrapid eye movement sleep and rapid eye movement sleep (REM) sleep. Restless legs syndrome prevalence increases wit…

Identifying phenotypes of obstructive sleep apnea using cluster analysis.

PURPOSE: Over the last decade, advances in understanding the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, systemic consequences and treatment responses in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have made individualised OSA management plausible. As the first step in this direction, this study was undertaken to identify OSA phenotypes. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with OSA on level 1 polysomnography (PSG) were included. Clinical and co-morbidity profile, anthropometry and sleepiness scores were compiled. On PSG, apnea-hypopnea index, positional indices, sleep stages and desaturation indices (T90) were tabulat…

Current and novel treatment options for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a challenging medical problem due to its prevalence, its impact on quality of life and performance in school and professionally, the implications for risk of accidents, and comorbidities and mortality. Current research has carved out a broad spectrum of clinical phenotypes and defined major pathophysiological components. These findings point to the concept of personalised therapy, oriented on both the distinct clinical presentation and the most relevant pathophysiology in the individual patient. This leads to questions of whether sufficient therapeutic options other…

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and anatomical factors: possible correlations.

OBJECTIVES: The following retrospective study was devised with the aim of evaluating the correlation between OSAS and various anatomical factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients over the age of 40 were analyzed, of which 19 were classified as OSAS cases and 18 as control cases. For each, 17 anatomical variables were identified and examined using Invivo Dental software on CBCT scans, WebCeph software on laterolateral teleradiographs, and Rhinoceros 6.0 software on dental casts. RESULTS: A generalized linear model of all the anatomical factors identified only two statistically sign

Positional obstructive sleep apnea in patients with atrial fibrillation.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common, potentially modifiable condition implicated in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). The presence and severity of OSA is largely sleep position-dependent, yet there is high variability in positional dependence among patients with OSA. We investigated the prevalence of positional OSA (POSA) and examined associated factors in patients with AF. METHODS: We recruited an equal number of patients with and without AF who underwent diagnostic polysomnography. Patients included had ≥ 120 min of total sleep time with 30 min of sleep in both su…

Sleep Quality and Related Clinical Manifestations in Huntington Disease.

(1) Background: Sleep patterns are frequently disrupted in neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington disease (HD); however, they are still poorly understood, especially their association with clinic features. Our study aimed to explore potential correlations between sleep features and motor, cognitive, behavioural and functional changes in manifest HD subjects. (2) Methods: We enrolled 42 patients who were assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) questionnaires; clinical features were evaluated by the validated ENROLL-HD platform assay, inclu…

Impaired Glymphatic System Actions in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Adults.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is accompanied by sleep fragmentation and altered sleep architecture, which can potentially hinder the glymphatic system, increasing risks for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the status is unclear in OSA. Our aim was to investigate the glymphatic system in OSA subjects and examine the relationships between OSA disease severity, sleep symptoms, and glymphatic system indices in OSA using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: We acquired DTI data from 59 OSA and 62 controls using a 3.0-Tesla MRI and examined OSA disease severity and sleep symptoms…

Examination of clinical sleep difficulties in college student-athletes.

BACKGROUND: Due to the rising concern of inadequate sleep, critical analysis is needed for the presence of sleep problems in diverse populations. Research has shown that college athletes may be one such population at risk for sleep disturbances. Poor sleep may lead to physiological, psychological, and cognitive deficits that can impact college athletes academically and athletically. This investigation was performed to examine the relationship of age, sex, and history of concussion on sleep disturbance in college athletes. METHODS: A total of 191 collegiate athletes between the ages of 18-26 f…

Altered sleep during spontaneous cannabinoid withdrawal in male mice.

Cessation of cannabinoid use in humans often leads to a withdrawal state that includes sleep disruption. Despite important health implications, little is known about how cannabinoid abstention affects sleep architecture, in part because spontaneous cannabinoid withdrawal is difficult to model in animals. In concurrent work we report that repeated administration of the high-efficacy cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptor agonist AM2389 to mice for 5 days led to heightened locomotor activity and paw tremor following treatment discontinuation, potentially indicative of spontaneous cannabinoid withdrawal. H…

Perioperative considerations for adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common, but often undiagnosed, sleep breathing disorder affecting approximately a third of adult surgical patients. OSA patients have increased sensitivity to anesthetic agents, sedatives, and opioid analgesics. RECENT FINDINGS: Newer technologies (e.g., bedside capnography) have demonstrated that OSA patients have repetitive apneic spells, beginning in the immediate postoperative period and peaking in frequency during the first postoperative night. Compared to patients without OSA, OSA patients have double the risk for postoperative pulmo…

Sleep disturbances in Lewy body dementia: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lewy body dementia (LBD) refers to both dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD). Sleep disturbances are common in LBD, and can include poor sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and rapid eye movement behaviour disorder (RBD). Despite the high clinical prevalence of sleep disturbances in LBD, they are under-studied relative to other dementias. The aim of the present systematic review was to examine the nature of sleep disturbances in LBD, summarise the effect of treatment studies upon sleep, and highlight specific and necessary direc…

Cancer and obstructive sleep apnea: An updated meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between cancers and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been discussed for decades. However, the previous meta-analysis led to opposite conclusions. To further investigate this controversial issue, we performed this systematic review and meta-analysis update. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched and studies on "cancer and OSA" were all included. Two reviewers independently searched articles, extracted data, and assessed the quality of included studies. Moreover, the overall incidence of cancer and OSA in corresponding populat…
