Dynamic within-person associations between problematic social media use and sleep quality among university students: The mediating role of nomophobia and the moderating role of trait rumination.

Problematic social media use (PSMU) and poor sleep quality are prevalent among university students. Although previous research has documented associations between PSMU and sleep problems, less is known about the short-term dynamic mechanisms underlying this relationship and the individual differences that may shape vulnerability. Drawing on intensive longitudinal data and dynamic structural equation modeling, this study examined a moderated mediation model in which nomophobia (i.e. anxiety or distress arising from being unable to access or use one's mobile phone) mediated the association betwe

Unraveling sleep dysfunction in progressive supranuclear palsy: a pilot study on the role of periodic limb movements in sleep and insomnia.

BACKGROUND: The association between progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and sleep disorders, particularly periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS), remains inadequately studied, despite their impact on disease progression and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the prevalence and severity of sleep disorders in PSP, with a focus on PLMS, in comparison to Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: 11 patients with PSP and 10 patients with PD completed validated sleep questionnaires and underwent home-based polysomnography. RESULTS: Patients with PSP reported significantly poorer sl

Subjective sleep quality and its subcomponents among homeless individuals in São Paulo.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep quality is essential for health, and sleep deprivation is linked to physical and mental issues. Homeless populations face additional sleep challenges, yet this topic remains underexplored. This study assessed sleep quality among homeless individuals in Sa˜o Paulo, Brazil, considering demographics and substance use. METHODS: A psychiatrist conducted interviews to collect demographic and substance use data assessing sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A generalized linear model was used to analyze PSQI scores, considering sleeping location, sex, subst

Integration of tai chi and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for sleep disturbances in older adults: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The arousal state has been demonstrated to be involved in the fundamental pathophysiological mechanism of sleep disturbances. Tai chi (TC) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have been documented to alleviate sleep disturbances by interfering with different arousal components. It is reasonable to assume that combining TC and rTMS could induce synergistic and longer-lasting benefits for sleep disturbances. METHODS: Thirty-eight older community-dwelling people were randomly assigned to one of three groups: TC plus rTMS (n = 12), TC alone (n = 13), and treat-as-us

Impact of Engagement in Exercise on Sleep Quality Among Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has beneficial effects for physical health outcomes and has also been shown to reduce the severity of psychological health symptoms. Recent studies have shown a potentially positive impact of exercise on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prominent among those with PTSD, sleep disturbance and nightmares are among the top three PTSD symptoms commonly reported by treatment-seeking Veterans. Regular physical exercise has been consistently associated with better sleep. This study utilized a longitudinal design to explore the relationship between exercise and sleep among Vet

The relationship between screen time, nighttime sleep duration, and behavioural problems in preschool children in China.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between screen time (ST), nighttime sleep duration, and behavioural problems in a sample of preschool children in China. A sample of 8900 children aged 3-6 years was enrolled from 35 kindergartens, in four cities, in two provinces, in China to evaluate the relationships between ST, nighttime sleep duration, and behavioural problems. Children's ST and nighttime sleep duration were assessed by questionnaires completed by parents or guardians. Behavioural problems were assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), an

Sleeping problems in Chinese illicit drug dependent subjects.

BACKGROUND: Illicit drug use/dependence has been recognized as a major problem. Clinical studies demonstrate that poor sleep quality is associated with increased frequency of drug use and relapse. However, few studies have addressed the issue of sleep quality among illicit drug dependent subjects. METHODS: This cross-sectional study explored sleep quality in drug dependent subjects in China. We studied 2178 illicit drug dependent subjects from drug rehabilitation centres in Changsha and 2236 non-drug-using subjects, all of whom completed the self-report Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).

The Use of Actigraphy Differentiates Sleep Disturbances in Active and Inactive Crohn's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances (SDs) are commonly reported in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Several survey instruments assessing subjective measures of insufficient sleep have identified SDs in subjects with CD. However, there are limited data on objective measures of SDs in these patients as they relate to disease activity. In this prospective cross-sectional study, we compared objective estimates of sleep obtained using multiday wrist actigraphy in individuals with CD with varying disease activity. METHODS: Eighty patients with a diagnosis of CD were recruited to take part in the stud

Effects of mirtazapine on sleep disturbance under neuropathic pain-like state.

Sleep disturbance has been reported to be one of the most frequent symptoms in patients suffered from severe pain. Benzodiazepines are effective and reduce anxiety in the hours after use, but the induced sleep tends to be less than ideal in quality, with increased Stages I-II and reduces Stages III-IV sleep. In the present study, we investigated sleep disturbance under a neuropathic pain-like state in mice using electroencephalogram (EEG)/electromyogram (EMG). In a model of neuropathic pain, sciatic nerve ligation caused a marked decrease in the latency of paw withdrawal in response to a therm

Evaluation of the protective effect of chamomile oral solution on the incidence of neurotoxicity caused by paclitaxel in breast cancer patients.

Neurotoxicity is one of the major complications in cancer patients following paclitaxel-containing regimens. Matricaria chamomilla L., isolated from the German chamomile, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant features. In this study we evaluated the preventive impact of a chamomile oral formulation against paclitaxel-induced neurotoxicity in cancer patients. In this triple-blind clinical trial, cancer patients on paclitaxel were randomly allocated to chamomile oral solution ( n  = 40), or the placebo ( n  = 40) 5 ml three times a day for four courses of chemotherapy starting one day before the

Association between weekly sleep duration and gallstones in a US-based adult sample: A cross-sectional study.

Sleep disorders and gallstone disease represent significant public health concerns, yet their potential association remains poorly understood. In particular, the association between weekly sleep duration and gallstone risk in adults has not been thoroughly investigated. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2021-2023) were analyzed in a cross-sectional study examining weekly sleep duration and gallstone risk. Advanced multivariate regression models were employed to comprehensively analyze and adjust for potential confounders. To ensure robustness, smooth curve

Sleep Related Problems as a Nonmotor Symptom of Dentatorubropallidoluysian Atrophy.

Dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by an expansion of a cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) repeat encoding a polyglutamine tract in the atrophin-1 protein. Unlike other CAG repeat diseases, sleep related problems have not been reported in patients with DRPLA. There was a 65-year-old man and his family with DRPLA. They suffered from seizure, gait disturbance, and cognitive decline. The patients commonly showed dream enacting sleep disorder, insomnia. The results from overnight polysomnography showed rapid eye movement (REM) without atonia in patients wi

Analysis of video-polysomnographic sleep findings in dementia with Lewy bodies.

Knowledge of sleep architecture and disorders of nocturnal sleep in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is limited by a lack of systematic video-polysomnographic (video-PSG) investigations. We describe video-PSG findings in 29 consecutive subjects diagnosed with DLB. All the patients underwent a clinical interview and overnight video-PSG monitoring. Twenty-nine nondemented patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) matched for age and sex with the DLB cases were selected for comparison. The DLB subjects showed less 1NREM sleep (P = .000) and more 2NREM sleep (P = .000) than the PD subjects. Sleep apne

Slow wave and rem sleep mechanisms are differently altered in hereditary pick disease associated with the TAU G389R mutation.

Sleep disturbances are found in the course of most dementing syndromes. We report a longitudinal polysomnographic and 18FDG-PET study in a 38-year-old male with FTDP17 carrying the Tau gene mutation G389R. All-night sleep EEG and wake cerebral glucose metabolism at rest (eyes/ears covered) of the preceding day were studied twice, eight months (Night 1; PET 1) and sixteen months (Night 2; PET 2) after the initial neurological evaluation. The Night 1 study showed sleep fragmentation associated to a short REM latency and a severe reduction of slow wave sleep, with relatively preserved NREM-REM sl

Sleep disturbances in aging: a theoretic and empiric analysis.

Empirical evidence suggests that elderly persons experience more frequent qualitative and quantitative sleep disturbances than persons of other age groups. These disruptions may be particularly detrimental to the elderly since their physiological tolerance for disequilibrium is more limited than that of younger persons. Some sleep changes, however, appear to be physiologically beneficial and adaptive and should not be inadvertently dampened with drugs or other measures. Considerably more research is needed to allow nurses to assess sleep problems and intervene to achieve the intended therapeut
