Multiple facets of serotonergic modulation.

The serotonergic system of the central nervous system (CNS) has been implicated in a broad range of physiological functions and behaviors, such as cognition, mood, social interaction, sexual behavior, feeding behavior, sleep-wake cycle and thermoregulation. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) establishes a plethora of interactions with neurochemical systems in the CNS via its numerous 5-HT receptors and autoreceptors. The facets of this control are multiple if we consider the molecular actors playing a role in the autoregulation of 5-HT neuron activity including the 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D, 5…

Effects of Infant Cleft Lip on Adult Gaze and Perceptions of "Cuteness".

OBJECTIVE: Early mother-infant interactions are impaired in the context of infant cleft lip and are associated with adverse child psychological outcomes, but the nature of these interaction difficulties is not yet fully understood. The aim of this study was to explore adult gaze behavior and cuteness perception, which are particularly important during early social exchanges, in response to infants with cleft lip, in order to investigate potential foundations for the interaction difficulties seen in this population. METHODS: Using an eye tracker, eye movements were recorded as adult participan

Twins and neural tube defects.

The hypothesis that anencephalus stems from fetus-fetus interactions in dizygotic twin pairs is examined by comparing the epidemiological predictions of the hypothesis with available observations. The hypothesis itself was based upon the disease-discordance and sex-concordance characteristics of twin pairs affected with anencephalus, and upon the sex ratio of the disease itself. The testable predictions of the hypothesis are (a) that variations in the incidence of anencephalus should be related to variations in dizygotic twinning rates, and particularly that dizygotic twinning rates will set u

Psychosocial Safety Climate and Occupational Health Outcomes Among Lone and Non-Lone Workers in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: Examine associations between psychosocial safety climate (PSC), occupational stress, and injury risk among lone workers (LWs) and non-LWs in the United States. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of representative General Social Survey data. LWs were identified using a systematic approach. Logistic regression assessed associations between PSC and outcomes, including PSC-by-worker-type interaction terms, adjusting for demographic, health, and employment factors. RESULTS: Each 1 SD increase in PSC was associated with 45% reduced odds of stress (OR=0.55, 95% CI: 0.48-0.63) and 22% redu

Identifying Reference Groups in Social Norms Campaigns Intended to Promote College Students' Mental Health Help-Seeking in South Korea.

This study examines which types of perceived social norms are strongly associated with professional mental health help-seeking (PMHS), and whether and how such associations are moderated by evaluative identification among college students. We conducted an online survey with 638 Korean adults. Results show that general college students' perceived injunctive norms (β = .37, p < .001) have the strongest associations with intentions, followed by close friends' perceived descriptive norms (β = .22, p < .001). Also, there was a significant positive interaction between perceived injunctive norms amon

Exploring new antiviral targets for influenza and COVID-19: Mapping promising hot spots in viral RNA polymerases.

Influenza and COVID-19 are infectious respiratory diseases that represent a major concern to public health with social and economic impact worldwide, for which the available therapeutic options are not satisfactory. The RdRp has a central role in viral replication and thus represents a major target for the development of antiviral approaches. In this study, we focused on Influenza A virus PB1 polymerase protein and the betacoronaviruses nsp12 polymerase protein, considering their functional and structural similarities. We have performed conservation and druggability analysis to map conserved d

Angiotensin-converting enzyme gates brain circuit-specific plasticity via an endogenous opioid.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) regulates blood pressure by cleaving angiotensin I to produce angiotensin II. In the brain, ACE is espec … in conditioned place preference caused by fentanyl administration and an enhancement of reciprocal social interaction. Our results raise the enticing prospect that central ACE inhibition can boost endogenous opioid signaling for clinical benefit while mitigating the risk of addiction.

Self, other and individuation: resolving narcissism through the lunar and solar paths of the Rosarium.

This paper describes narcissism as our natural, infant-like behaviour, and specifies three characteristics relating to the evacuation and avoidance of distress, to control, and to distancing from relationship. It suggests that the processes of incarnation and individuation represent the development of the early ego and the 'resolution' of these narcissistic ways of being, including escape from the 'mirror trap'. The development of the early, controlling 'homunculus-ego' entails the loosening and broadening of ego-identifications and the ego becoming subject to the Self. This is an embodied-rel

A case of mistaken diagnoses: diagnostic and management challenges in a case of adult autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is frequently identified in children but is often unrecognised in adults. ASD is characterised by difficulties in social interaction, communication and restricted interests, but other presentations are common, especially in adults. This report describes a 34-year-old man with a history of multiple psychiatric diagnoses including generalised anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder and panic disorder. He was diagnosed with ASD in his early 30s and engaged in a targeted treatment plan, including rationalisation of medications, supportive therapy and occupational…

[Diseases affecting the scalp].

The skin of the scalp differs from the skin on the other areas of the body because of a higher density of hair follicles and higher sebum production. These, together with the presence of hair, provide a suitable environment for superficial infections, infestations and inflammatory diseases. The good condition of the scalp has a significant impact on the patient's mental well-being and social interaction. The visibility of this part of the skin and the presence of hair itself restrict the range of possible therapeutic agents that can be used due to the complicated application and poor cosmetic …

Autism spectrum traits and visual processing in young adults with very low birth weight: the Helsinki Study of Very Low Birth Weight adults.

Visual processing problems may be one underlying factor for cognitive impairments related to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). We examined associations between ASD-traits (Autism-Spectrum Quotient) and visual processing performance (Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test; Block Design task of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III) in young adults (mean age=25.0, s.d.=2.1 years) born preterm at very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) (n=101) or at term (n=104). A higher level of ASD-traits was associated with slower global visual processing speed among the preterm VLBW, but not among the term-bor

[ALOPECIA AREATA].

Alopecia areata (AA) is an organ specific autoimmune disease. Similar to other autoimmune diseases, its pathogenesis is believed to be an interaction of genetic, environmental and immune factors. Studies have shown that autoreactive lymphocytes affect anagen hair follicles leading to subsequent shedding of hairs and alopecia. Clinically, the disease is characterized by sudden nonscarring hair loss that usually involves the scalp, but may also affect the face and other body areas, and indeed the entire body hair. AA may appear for the first time at any age, affecting both children and adults, b

[Research advances in the management of autism spectrum disorders in children].

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of developmental dysfuntion of nervous system characterized by social interaction and communication disorders, restricted interests and repetitive stereotyped behaviors. The incidence of ASD has been increasing through the world. Some studies have shown that early reasonable individualized comprehensive intervention can obviously improve the prognosis of children with ASD. The etiology of ASD is unclear now, and behavioral and developmental intervention is the main therapy for ASD. The reasonable application of some drugs can improve the efficacy of …

Diminished gray matter within the hypothalamus in autism disorder: a potential link to hormonal effects?

BACKGROUND: Subjects with autism suffer from impairments of social interaction, deviations in language usage, as well as restricted and stereotyped patterns of behavior. These characteristics are found irrespective of age, IQ, and gender of affected subjects. However, brain changes due to age, IQ, and gender might pose potential confounds in autism neuroimaging analyses. METHODS: To investigate gray matter differences in autism that are not related to these potential confounds, we performed a voxel-based morphometry analysis in 52 affected children and adolescents and 52 matched control subje…

Self-organization in social tagging systems.

Individuals often imitate each other to fall into the typical group, leading to a self-organized state of typical behaviors in a community. In this paper, we model self-organization in social tagging systems and illustrate the underlying interaction and dynamics. Specifically, we introduce a model in which individuals adjust their own tagging tendency to imitate the average tagging tendency. We found that when users are of low confidence, they tend to imitate others and lead to a self-organized state with active tagging. On the other hand, when users are of high confidence and are stubborn to
