Childhood adversity, serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) genotype, and risk for cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence in alcohol dependent adults.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the extent to which cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence in adults with alcohol dependence (AD) are associated with adverse childhood experiences. Gender, social support, and an allelic variant in the gene encoding the serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) were examined as moderators of this relationship. METHODS: The Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism - Version II (SSAGA-II) was used to assess DSM-IV diagnoses and cigarette smoking characteristics as well as traumatic life events and social support during childhood in 256 AD men (n=149) …

The effects of antidepressant medication adherence as well as psychosocial and clinical factors on depression outcome among older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the contribution of medication adherence to 12-month depression scores in the context of other psychosocial and clinical predictors of depression in a sample of older adults treated for depression. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study involving 241 older patients undergoing depression treatment using a standardized algorithm. Living alone and depression in Chinese older adults.

Western literature has repeatedly indicated a strong relationship between living alone and depression among the aged population, however, studies among the Chinese population are scarce. In this paper, we examine whether the association between living alone and depression is independent of health status, social support and financial strain among Chinese older adults, and subsequently assess whether such association persists after adjusting these variables. Cross-sectional data drawn from the Hong Kong Population Census consisting of 2,003 Chinese elderly people aged 60 or over were analyzed. C…

Loneliness as a specific risk factor for depressive symptoms: cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.

The extent to which loneliness is a unique risk factor for depressive symptoms was determined in 2 population-based studies of middle-aged to older adults, and the possible causal influences between loneliness and depressive symptoms were examined longitudinally in the 2nd study. In Study 1, a nationally representative sample of persons aged 54 and older completed a telephone interview as part of a study of health and aging. Higher levels of loneliness were associated with more depressive symptoms, net of the effects of age, gender, ethnicity, education, income, marital status, social support,…

Ethnic and gay community attachments and sexual risk behaviors among urban Latino young men who have sex with men.

Culturally relevant prevention programs are required to reduce HIV risk exposure of Latino young men who have sex with men (YMSM). As part of Hermanos Jóvenes, 465 Latino YMSM were surveyed at community venues of New York City outside the gay-identified area of lower Manhattan. We examined factors that influence ethnic and gay community attachments; the association between community attachments and social support in sexual matters; and the relationship between levels of attachment, social support in sexual matters, and sexual risk behaviors. Sixty-eight percent felt closely connected to their …

This article examines psychopathology, functioning, well-being, social support, and coping-behavior of family practice patients with a history of depressive illness, both with and without recurrences. Results of depressive patients were compared with each other and with those of "normal" controls. The patients belonged to the four practices of the Continuous Morbidity Registry of the University of Nijmegen, Netherlands. Their first episode of depression for each patient was more than 15 years ago. Data were collected with the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90) the RAND-36, the Social Support List (SSL…

Contrast of treatment-seeking and untreated cocaine abusers.

Eighty-nine cocaine abusers seeking treatment were compared with 89 untreated cocaine abusers recruited through chain referral. The community users reported significantly higher levels of polysubstance abuse, fewer negative consequences of cocaine use, lower levels of participation in adult social roles, and greater involvement with the legal system and illegal activities. The two groups were found to be comparable on measures of severity of cocaine use, utilization of self-control strategies to restrict cocaine use, and rates of current and lifetime psychiatric disorders. Findings suggest tha

The study aimed to explore the impact of the scheme from the perspectives of clients, floating support workers and representatives from health, social care and voluntary agencies. It was found that the majority of clients had long-term mental health problems and were supported by a range of professionals. Floating support was flexible in responding to individual needs. Barriers to social participation among patients with hemophilia: a qualitative study using social-ecological systems theory.

BACKGROUND: Social participation greatly determines health-related quality of life, while people with hemophilia face severe social engagement restrictions. Current studies only explore such barriers from single dimensions including joint function, employment and mental distress, lacking a comprehensive social-ecological perspective. Based on social-ecological systems theory, this study systematically analyzes multi-level barriers to social participation among Chinese hemophilia patients to support integrated nursing intervention development. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological qualitativ

Mechanisms of impact of mental health peer support in high-, middle- and low-income settings: mediation analysis of the UPSIDES randomised controlled trial.

AIMS: While there is growing evidence for the effectiveness of peer support (PS) in improving psychosocial outcomes among individuals with severe mental health conditions, the mechanisms through which these effects occur remain insufficiently understood. This study examines whether social inclusion, hope and empowerment mediate the relationship between PS, personal recovery and health and social functioning. METHODS: Data were collected from 565 adults with severe mental health conditions who participated in the multicentre UPSIDES randomised controlled trial across six sites in Germany, Ugan

Invisible Challenges of a Visible Disease: A Qualitative Study on Disease-related Impairment, Participation Barriers and Care Experiences in Adults with Ichthyosis.

Ichthyoses are rare genodermatoses characterized by scaling, hyperkeratosis, and barrier dysfunction, often accompanied by hypohidrosis and pruritus. Beyond visible symptoms, ichthyosis imposes substantial psychosocial, financial, and time-related challenges. This qualitative study explored patient-perceived impairments, disability, and experiences with medical and social care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 adults (13 women, 5 men; aged 18-67 years) with various ichthyosis subtypes, recruited from two specialized dermatology clinics in Germany and the patient organization I
