Utility of trypan blue in identifying damaged extraocular muscles in orbital trauma: a case report.

PURPOSE: Complete rupture or avulsion of an extraocular muscle after orbital trauma is rare, and intraoperative identification of the retracted muscle stump may be difficult when the surgical field is distorted by hemorrhage and edema. Trypan blue 0.1% is a vital dye that stains muscle sheaths and tendons without staining sclera or muscle fibers, and has been described in strabismus reoperations and lost-muscle recovery. Its use during acute exploratory surgery for orbital trauma has not, to our knowledge, been reported. METHODS: We report a 30-year-old woman who presented with binocular vert…

Ocular motor and vestibular examination in the unconscious patient-standard of care.

BACKGROUND: Eye movements play an essential role in the assessment of the unconscious patient and offer a window to the function of the brai … esions, while disconjugate deviations may indicate superimposed eye muscle palsies or decompensated strabismus. The presence of a full range of spontaneous horizontal, oscillatory eye movements (e.g., ping-pong gaze) in the comatose patient usually indicates bilateral cerebral hemisphere dysfunction. With vertical spontaneous eye movements, the identificatio …

For the 21 studies that reported the referral rate (percentage of children who failed based on the screening result), the rate varied significantly (2.26%-63%). Higher referral rates were seen in studies based in ophthalmology cl …

Broadening the phenotype and genotype spectrum of novel mutations in pontocerebellar hypoplasia with a comprehensive molecular literature review.

BACKGROUND: Pontocerebellar hypoplasia is an umbrella term describing a heterogeneous group of prenatal neurodegenerative disorders mostly a … nts presented with developmental delay, hypotonia, seizure, and microcephaly being common features. Strabismus and elevation in lactate levels in MR spectroscopy were novel phenotypes for the first time in PCH types 7 and 9. CONCLUSIONS: This study merges previously documented phenotypes and genotypes with unique novel ones. Due to the diversity in PCH, we …

Clinical and genetic risk factors underlying severe consequence identified in 75 families with unilateral high myopia.

BACKGROUNDS: Unilateral high myopia (uHM), commonly observed in patients with retinal diseases or only with high myopia, is frequently assoc … , this is the first systematic genetic study on simplex uHM to date. In addition to routine care of strabismus and amblyopia, careful examination of the peripheral retina and genetic screening is warranted for patients with uHM in order to identify signs of risk for retinal detachment and other complications and provide meaningful genetic counseling.

Long-term development of refractive error in refractive, nonrefractive and partially accommodative esotropia.

Accommodative esotropia (AE) is a convergent deviation due to an excess of the convergence linked to the innervational stimulus for accommodation and it is usually associated to the presence of hyperopia. The development of hyperopia over time has been widely described but the lack of comparative analysis among accommodative esotropia subtypes, does not allow to verify the existence of different developmental patterns. In this study we aimed to describe the long term changes of refractive error in patients affected by accommodative esotropia as a function of the strabismus type: refractive (RA…

Vision impairment in boys recruited to the iREAD study.

BACKGROUND: Uncorrected refractive error is reported to be the most common cause globally of vision impairment in school age children. However, little is known about the extent of uncorrected refractive error in Israel. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of vision impairment in schoolchildren recruited for the Israel Refraction, Environment, And Devices (iREAD) Study. METHODS: Healthy boys, ages 5-13 years, were recruited to participate in the iREAD Study. Parents first answered a questionnaire to exclude children with a known history of amblyopia, strabismus, or hype…

Knowledge and Awareness Regarding Amblyopia Among Parents in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Amblyopia is an abnormal development of usually one eye, leading to permanent decreased vision in the affected eye if not treated early. The condition is primarily caused by strabismus, cataract, anisometropic refractive error, or genetic factors and can manifest from birth to seven years of age, with a worldwide prevalence of 1.75%. This study examines parental knowledge of amblyopia in an effort to improve its early detection and intervention. Improving awareness can have a direct impact by lowering the incidence of untreated amblyopia and its related visual impairment. This stu…
