Anhedonia and PTSD symptom severity profiles differentially influence physical activity volume in trauma-exposed adults.

Background: It is well-established that adults with elevated psychiatric symptoms or a psychiatric disorder (e.g. depression) engage in lower amounts of physical activity (PA) compared to adults with fewer symptoms/no diagnosis. However, less is known about the association between psychiatric symptoms and PA behaviour in trauma-exposed adults. Most prior investigations have focused on independent associations between overall depression or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in relation to PA and have neglected specific symptom domains (e.g. anhedonia). Therefore, we conducted seconda

Factors associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms in healthcare providers after performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation: a mixed-methods study.

The experience of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can cause post-traumatic stress symptoms that negatively impact healthcare providers and reduced their clinical competency. This two-phase mixed-methods was conducted to investigate the factors that cause post-traumatic disorder (PTSD) in healthcare providers who perform CPR. Phase 1 included a survey with a trauma screening questionnaire (TSQ). Phase 2 included gathering interview data and applying conventional content analysis to identify themes. Of the 286 medical staff who completed the TSQ, 32 (11.2%) of respondents experien

Effects of congruent and incongruent appetitive and aversive well-being comparisons on depression, post-traumatic stress, and self-esteem.

Background: People compare their current well-being to different comparison standards (e.g. social or temporal comparisons). These standards are considered as aversive if perceived as threatening to self-motives or appetitive if perceived as consistent with self-motives. However, it remains unknown whether the congruence (vs. incongruence) of aversive and appetitive well-being comparisons (high levels of both vs. preponderance of aversive comparisons over appetitive comparisons) is differentially related to symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and self-esteem.Method

Neurochemical, Neurocircuitry, and Psychopathological Mechanisms of PTSD: Emerging Pharmacotherapies and Clinical Perspectives.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition triggered by exposure to traumatic events, with complex neurobiological anomalies that remain incompletely understood. This review aims to comprehensively explore the neurocircuitry, neurochemical dysregulation, and emerging pharmacological targets associated with PTSD, offering a consolidated framework for developing more effective treatments. Particular emphasis is employed on the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, monoamines, glutamate, GABAergic, and the orexinergic system, as well as emerging

PTSD Symptoms change in response to a brief intensive trauma-focused treatment programme in non-veterans and veterans with war-related PTSD.

Background: Evidence suggests that veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are less likely to benefit from trauma-focused treatment than are patients with PTSD who have not been exposed to war-related trauma. However, new developments in PTSD treatment that combine several evidence-based trauma-focused therapies within a short time frame may help veterans achieve outcomes similar to those of non-veterans.Objective: In this retrospective cohort study, we examined changes in PTSD symptoms and diagnostic status after treatment between veterans and non-veterans. The treatment consisted

The vulnerable role of empathy in children who live in conflict zones.

Objective: Children in conflict zones face repeated and cumulative trauma exposure, increasing their risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite the critical role of empathy in coping with trauma, research on how children's cognitive and affective empathy relates to their psychological adjustment remains limited. Adult studies suggest that cognitive empathy may support better coping, whereas affective empathy could increase vulnerability to PTSD symptoms. However, it remains unclear whether this differential pattern holds in children and how it interacts with levels of trauma expos

Factors Affecting Separation Anxiety Disorder in Adolescent Earthquake Survivors: The Case of Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes (2023).

OBJECTIVE: The Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (2023) are the largest and most devastating earthquakes in the history of the Republic. The effects of these earthquakes are particularly deeply felt among younger generations and trigger various psychological factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to measure the levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social phobia (SP), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and depression on separation anxiety disorder (SAD) among adolescent earthquake survivors affected by the Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (2023). METHODS: In the study, the data were obtain

Change in sexual distress during cognitive processing therapy: Characterization and baseline predictors.

Experiences of interpersonal trauma can negatively impact survivors' sexual wellness, including leading to increased sexual distress. Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) has been shown to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the extent to which treatment gains extend to sexual distress is less known. We examined change in sexual distress and baseline predictors of change in sexual distress in a sample of 161 adult survivors of interpersonal violence receiving CPT for PTSD (86 % female, 47 % Black). Latent difference score models showed sexual distress significantly decre

Prevalence and correlates of positive and negative psychological effects of bereavement due to COVID-19: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was associated with an increase in mortality rates globally. Given the high numbers of deaths and the potentially traumatic characteristics of COVID-19 deaths, it was expected that grief-related distress would be higher in COVID-19 bereaved (compared to non-COVID-19 bereaved) people. This systematic review investigates the empirical evidence regarding this claim. More specifically, this review summarizes studies up to December 2024, evaluating the prevalence and correlates of positive and negative psychological effects of COVID-19 be

Association of social and life threats with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined psychological reactions to perceived threats, viewed within the context of human evolutionary history. We compared the relative weight of perceived threat to life or physical harm versus social threat, i.e., humiliation and/or rejection, in symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: Participants were 50 women with clinically significant posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and 59 women with little or no PTSS (control group) selected from a large, population-based cohort of women in Iceland, the SAGA Cohort. Red flags for depression and PTSD following acute myocardial infarction: the role of early psychological symptoms.

Patients who have experienced an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are at increased risk of developing depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the long term. However, whether these psychiatric comorbidities are preceded by early psychological symptoms appearing within the first days after AMI remains unclear. This study provides the identification of early psychological symptoms after AMI and evaluates their predictive value for the subsequent development of AMI-related depression and PTSD. A cohort of 129 AMI patients underwent assessments for early psychological symptoms (depr

Cardiovascular Care in Women Veterans: An Updated Profile.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an updated summary of the burden and care of cardiovascular disease in women veterans. RECENT FINDINGS: Women veterans can develop atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease at a much earlier age of 30 years compared to non-veteran women. Those who experienced chronic stress and environmental exposures were more likely to develop early menopause and premature coronary artery disease. Despite major improvements in therapeutic options for cardiovascular disease, the mortality rate of women veterans continues to rise while that of their counterparts has steadily decreas

Trauma Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in a Rural Perinatal Population.

INTRODUCTION: There is very limited information on the rates of trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for perinatal individuals who live in rural settings. Increasing understanding of traumatic experiences among rural-dwelling pregnant individuals may be an important avenue through which midwives can help address the care disparities and poor outcomes in this population. This study aimed to implement screening and estimate prevalence rates of trauma exposure and perinatal PTSD symptoms among individuals at a Midwestern rural obstetric clinic. METHODS: Participants

Changing maladaptive trauma-related cognitions and emotional activation during trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy: Thematic content and relationships with posttraumatic stress symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Changing maladaptive trauma-related cognitions may be crucial in trauma-focused cognitive behaviour therapy (TF-CBT). We identified common maladaptive cognitions during TF-CBT's trauma narration and processing phase and examined their relationship with trauma type and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). We also assessed whether maladaptive trauma-related cognitions (overgeneralization, assimilation), more balanced and functional cognitions (accommodation), and negative emotions during this phase of TF-CBT were associated with PTSS. METHODS: Adolescents exposed to multiple types

Protective Factors in the Context of Childhood Bereavement: Youth Gratitude, Future Orientation, and Purpose in Life.

The objective of the study was to examine potential associations between positive youth development constructs (gratitude, future orientation, purpose in life) and psychological functioning (posttraumatic stress symptoms, depressive symptoms, maladaptive grief reactions) among bereaved youth and test whether these associations vary by age. A diverse sample of 197 clinic-referred bereaved youth (56.2% female; M = 12.36, SD = 3.18; 36.1% Hispanic, 23.7% White, 20.1% Black, 11.9% Multiracial, and 8.2% another race/ethnicity) completed self-report measures of psychological functioning and positive

PTSD biomarkers: Neuroendocrine signaling to epigenetic variants.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by exposure to traumatic events and involves symptom domains such as intrusive thoughts, avoidant behaviors, negative mood, and cognitive dysfunction. The disorder can be chronic and debilitating, and the heterogenous nature and varied presentation of PTSD has afforded difficulty in determining efficacious treatment. The ability to identify biomarkers for PTSD risk, prognosis, or for the purposes of treatment, would be highly valuable. There is evidence for peripheral biomarkers related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the immune

Training, Deployment Preparation, and Behavioral Health of New York National Guard Personnel Deployed to Assist with COVID-19 Decedent Work.

INTRODUCTION: A small body of research conducted mostly among civilians has shown that adequate training and preparation can prevent or reduce the development of behavioral health problems in first responders. Several civilian studies have shown that social support is protective against behavioral health problems. However, very few studies have examined the impact of these factors on the behavioral health of military first responders. Military first responders, who serve in the aftermath of natural disasters and disease outbreaks such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, are of

Loneliness and social isolation amongst refugees resettled in high-income countries: A systematic review.

Refugees encounter multiple psychosocial stressors post-resettlement which increases their risk of developing a mental illness. Loneliness and social isolation are commonly reported in the refugee population and have been demonstrated to be associated with multiple physical and mental health comorbidities in the general population. However, no study to date has systematically reviewed how loneliness and social isolation may affect refugees who have resettled in high-income countries. This systematic review aims to study the prevalence, risk factors, consequences, and interventions for loneline
