Cardiac Arrest in Frontal Lobe Epilepsy: A Potential Cause of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms involved in the causation of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) are not well understood. Ictal asystole has been identified as a cause of SUDEP in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Herein, we report a patient who developed cardiac arrest during the ictal period of frontal lobe epilepsy. CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old man presented with a history of progressive nocturnal stiffness in the left lower extremity since 6 years and that of paroxysmal episodes of altered consciousness. In the last 2 years, he sustained epileptic seizures which presented as closed eyes,…

Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome: MRI neuroimaging features in a series of 7 patients.

Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome is a congenital disorder characterized by macrocephaly, intestinal polyposis, lipomas, and pigmented macul … g. MR imaging results showed white matter cysts in the parietal lobe (7/7), frontal lobe (3/7), and temporal lobe (1/7). These were predominantly surrounded by white matter T2 hyperintensities associated with macrocephaly. Cystic lesions on MR imaging in Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome are prevalent, and knowledge of this differential diagnosis can allow the …

Attention, memory, and behavioral adjustment in children with frontal lobe epilepsy.

To explore whether attention, memory, and behavior would be more affected in children with frontal lobe epilepsy than in children with other types of epilepsy, we compared 16 children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), 8 with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and 8 with generalized absence (GEA) seizures on the Performance Speed (PS) and Freedom of Distraction (FD) indices of the WISC-III, the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT), and Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). Parents completed Achenbach's Child Behavior Check List. Children with FLE scored signi…

Visual phenomena and anatomo-electro-clinical correlations in occipital lobe seizures.

BACKGROUND: Occipital lobe seizure are underrepresented in epilepsy surgery cases series. This may reflect the fear for post-surgical functional deficits but also the doubt about the ability of anatomo-electro-clinical correlations to localize precisely the epileptogenic zone in occipital lobe seizure. METHODS: In this expert opinion paper, we review first the general clinical characteristics of occipital lobe seizures, describe the repertoire of visual phenomena and oculo-motor signes in occipital seizures, describe inter-ictal and ictal EEG and finally the possible schemes of epileptogenic

Detecting structural and functional neuroplasticity in elite ice-skating athletes.

Using resting-state fMRI, this study investigated long-term ice-skating training related changes in elite ice-skating athletes and compared them to healthy age-matched non-athletes under resting-state conditions. Significant differences were found in both structural and functional plasticity. Specifically, elite ice-skating athletes showed higher gray matter volume in the posterior cerebellum, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, posterior cingulate, caudate, and thalamus. The functional plasticity changes were primarily concentrated in the posterior cerebellar lobe. Additionally, stronger connectivit…

[Ictal arterial spin labeling MRI findings in two cases of acute confusional migraine].

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that enables visualizing of cerebral blood flow without need of a contrast medium. In recent years, there have been reports from outside Japan related to ASL use in migraine attacks. We report two cases of acute confusional migraine (ACM) in children. At time of confusion, ASL imaging showed reduced blood flow: for the first patient, in both cerebral hemispheres from the occipital lobe through the parietal lobe to the temporal lobe; for the second patient, throughout the left cerebral hemisphere. T1-, T2-, diffusion-w…

Abnormal imitation-related cortical activation sequences in Asperger's syndrome.

Subjects with Asperger's syndrome (AS) are impaired in social interaction and imitation, but the underlying brain mechanisms are poorly understood. Because the mirror-neuron system (MNS) that matches observed and executed actions has been suggested to play an important role in imitation and in reading of other people's intentions, we assessed MNS functions in 8 adult AS subjects and in 10 healthy control subjects during imitation of still pictures of lip forms. In the control subjects, cortical activation progressed in 30 to 80-millisecond steps from the occipital cortex to the superior tempor

Acquired agraphia caused by focal brain damage.

Motor and linguistic aspects of writing were evaluated in 31 subjects with focal damage in 1 of 3 regions of the left hemisphere: (1) dorsolateral frontal lobe sparing primary motor cortex (group FL), (2) parietal lobe (group PL), or (3) temporal lobe (group TL). A standard procedure was used to evaluate writing for grapheme formation, spatial arrangement, spelling, word selection, grammar, and perseveration. It was predicted that agraphia would be observed in all 3 groups, and that the most severe impairments would be associated with frontal lobe damage, particularly in aspects of writing dep…

Medial entorhinal cortex plays a specialized role in learning of flexible, context-dependent interval timing behavior.

Episodic memory requires encoding the temporal structure of experience and relies on brain circuits in the medial temporal lobe, including the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC). Recent studies have identified MEC 'time cells', which fire at specific moments during interval timing tasks, collectively tiling the entire timing period. It has been hypothesized that MEC time cells could provide temporal information necessary for episodic memories, yet it remains unknown whether MEC time cells display learning dynamics required for encoding different temporal contexts. To explore this, we developed a n…
