[Retrograde percutaneous nephrostomy: a case report].

We performed retrograde percutaneous nephrostomy on a 79-year-old woman admitted to our hospital with recurrent right acute pyelonephritis. Computed tomographic scan showed mild hydronephrosis and some renal stones in the right kidney. Antegrade percutaneous nephrostomy was thought to be impossible because the patient could not be placed in a prone position. Urgent drainage by ureteral catheter placement in the right renal pelvis was performed in the lithotomy position. After pyelonephritis improved, retrograde percutaneous nephrostomy was performed, which provided precise percutaneous access

Simplified technique to create a concealed catheterizable stoma: the VR flap.

PURPOSE: We describe a surgical modification of VQZ plasty, the VR flap. In addition to avoiding skin surface mucosal prolapse and preventing stenosis, this procedure is easier to describe and perform. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 12 patients (4 males and 8 females) 6 to 14 years old (mean age 11.6) underwent simultaneous creation of a continent catheterizable channel using the Mitrofanoff principle and MACE procedure. VQZ plasty was modified by using a quadrilateral flap positioned at a 90-degree angle from the V flap instead of immediately next to it. The quadrilateral flap is used to

Endoscopic removal of knotted urethral catheter: a point of technique.

Urethral catheter knotting is a rare complication of the simple and widely practiced clean intermittent self-catheterization. We report the endoscopic retrieval of a retained knotted feeding tube in a 12-year-old child. Various factors leading to such a rare complication and a new minimal invasive technique are described. To the best of our knowledge this technique has not been previously reported in the medical literature.

Pressure ulcers: an unusual complication of indwelling urethral catheter.

INTRODUCTION: Pressure ulcers are common among patients with spinal cord disorders (SCD) and occur due to unrelieved pressure on soft tissues. CASE REPORTS: Two ladies with paraplegia following acute transverse myelitis developed pressure ulcers over medial aspects of thighs due to indwelling urethral catheter. Absence of sensation, weakness of both legs and lack of knowledge about catheter care contributed to ulcer formation. CONCLUSION: Indwelling urethral catheter may unusually result in pressure ulcers over the thighs in patients with SCD. Among health professionals involved in the care

Major surgical complications from minor urological procedures.

Some urological procedures are regarded as minor or simple. As a result, these may be delegated to trainee surgeons to do. Occasionally nonmedical persons embark on some of the procedures such as male circumcision. Published serious complications from urological procedures considered minor or simple were identified from a Medline search (1966 through 1999) and reference lists of relevant publications. The operations regarded as minor were carried out by medical personnel of all grades as well as by nonmedical persons. The complications can be classified as mutilatory, infective, hemorrhagic, o

A study of current nursing management of long-term suprapubic catheters.

Problems associated with long-term catheters can place increased demands on nurses' time and resources. This article reports a study which investigated the nursing management of 113 patients with long-term suprapubic catheters. The study identified that 52% of catheters were changed routinely, 30% of catheters were changed only when they became blocked and 30% of nurses experienced problems when changing catheters. A total of 42% of patients received either a bladder 'washout' or instillation and 60% required a dressing around their suprapubic site. This study also examined the reasons for app

[Double hemorrhagic complication of endo-urologic drainage in single kidney].

Hemorrhage is the most worrisome complication of percutaneous renal procedures, and usually occurs early in the postoperative period. The incidence of severe arterial injury is 1 to 2%. We report a patient who had 2 bleeding episodes on a solitary kidney. The first, which occurred early after the procedure, was due to an arteriocaliceal fistula treated by coil embolization. The second bleeding episode occurred two weeks later, and was caused by erosion of a lumbar artery; it was embolized by microparticles. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the imaging findings. In summary, when bl

[Giant calcifications of a double-J ureteral catheter].

We present a case of recurring gigantic calcifications of both extreme of a double-J ureteral catheter, with long permanency of the same. We expose the technical maneuvers that were specified for the managing of so important complication. We emphasize the renal functional conservation found in spite of the magnitude of the calcifications. We check the national literature in this regard of this complication and we expose the etiological mechanisms, prophylactic recommendations and therapeutic managing of this complication to the extended use of ureteral catheters.

[Effects of a 6F urethral catheter on uroflowmetry in men with benign prostatic hypertrophy].

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the presence of a 6F catheter in the urethra modifies uroflowmetric parameters in a population of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 260 patients, 45 to 86 years old, presenting with benign prostatic hyperplasia, underwent two uroflowmetries, one with the urethra free, the other with a 6F urethral catheter. Patients with a history of neurological disease, diabetes mellitus, prostatic cancer, lower urinary tract surgery or taking drugs likely to affect micturition, were excluded from the study. Maximum flow rate (Qmax) and voided volume

[The proximal migration of a double-J catheter. A review of the predisposing factors. Apropos a case].

Case report of a patient bearer of a double-J ureteral catheter due to ureteral lithiasis. After persistent renoureteral pain and fever, the proximal migration of the catheter is confirmed radiologically. The predisposing factors for this complication, described in the literature, are reviewed.

A multicentre comparative evaluation of catheter valves.

Catheter valves are an alternative to leg bags for urine drainage, but no studies have yet been published which have compared the performance of different valves. This study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of the seven catheter valves available on the UK market in April 1996. The study was carried out by the Continence Products Evaluation (CPE) Network funded by the Medical Devices Agency (Department of Health). Each valve type was tested for 1 week by 19-36 cognitively unimpaired and manually dextrous subjects recruited from 11 test centres. At the end of each week, subjects comple
