OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcomes of surgical correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) and a non-VCFS group.
DESIGN: Twenty-five patients with VCFS (16 girls and 9 boys) underwent palatal lengthening for VPI between 1986 and 2001. The mean age at surgery was 6.4 years. OBJECTIVE: Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) (9-16kHz) are a useful measure of the function of the cochlea, which may be damaged by ototoxic drugs during anticancer chemotherapy. As children undergoing chemotherapy may also have middle ear problems, it is necessary to know if middle ear problems would have a confounding effect on the ability of DPOAEs to assess cochlear function in the extend high frequency region (9-16kHz). Acute audiovestibular symptoms (hearing loss and vertigo) can be caused by labyrinthine disorders such as viral labyrinthitis, cerebrovascular diseases, perilymphatic fistula and acoustic neuroma. If neurological symptoms are not present, it is more likely that viral labyrinthitis is the cause, especially in the absence of abnormal findings on imaging (Lee et al, 2002).

The examination of 103 children aged 1 year to 5 years had acute otitis media purulenta. They were treated with paracentesis which had a positive effect on recovery of the acoustic function. It is shown that children with previous acute otitis media should be followed up to control recovery of hearing.

We report a rare case of glossopharyngeal schwannoma whose clinical presentation and the radiological work up suggested an acoustic schwannoma. The diagnosis was made at surgery, once attachment to ninth cranial nerve was seen. The clinical presentation, radiological features and surgical findings of the glossopharyngeal schwannoma are presented along with the review of literature.

Insertion of turundas covered with pilastin into the acoustic meatus alleviates exacerbation of chronic otitis media purulenta. As a result, disability does not last more than 2-12 days and was followed by a persistent remission and activation of immunity. Pilastin enhances proliferation and division of lymphocytes, increases blood levels of IgG and IgA.

Two cases of patients struck by lightning are described. One instance occurred while the victim was using the telephone; the other victim received a direct lightning strike to the head. Both patients had acoustic shock injuries and one developed a cerebral infarct. The mechanisms of these injuries are discussed and the relevant literature is reviewed.
