Accelerated biological brain aging in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients commonly encounter multiple types of functional disabilities, such as social, physical, and role functioning. MDD is related to an accreted risk of brain atrophy, aging-associated brain diseases, and mortality. Based on recently available studies, there are correlations between notable biological brain aging and MDD in adulthood. Despite several clinical and epidemiological studies that associate MDD with aging phenotypes, the underlying mechanisms in the brain remain unknown. The key areas in the study of biological brain aging in MDD are structural br…

Revolutionizing brain interventions: the multifaceted potential of histotripsy.

Histotripsy, a non-thermal ultrasound technique, holds significant promise in various applications within the realm of brain interventions. While its use for treating brain tumors is somewhat limited, focused ultrasound technology has been extensively investigated for a wide range of purposes within the brain, including disrupting the blood-brain barrier, supporting immunotherapy, addressing conditions like essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and neuropathic pain. Research findings indicate that histotripsy can reduce tumor cells with fewer pulses, minimizing …

A big bang theory of big brain trauma.

One of the biggest neurophysiological science news headlines of the 2024 summer reported a critical link between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicide, and brain injury from blast events in members of the elite US fighting force, Navy SEALS. Researchers from the Department of Defense/Uniformed Services University Brain Tissue Repository (DOD/USU BTR) had discovered a border of neural damage between the layers of white and gray matter comprising the cortical folds of service members' brains. Described as a distinctive anatomical line of astroglial scarring along the shared junctions of…

Electroconvulsive Therapy With Brain Cyst: A Simulation Study.

INTRODUCTION: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective in treating severe depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders, but how the presence of an anatomical anomaly affects the electrical pathways between the electrodes remains unclear. We investigate the difference in electric field (E-field) distribution during ECT in the brain of a patient with an arachnoid cyst relative to hypothetical condition where the cyst was not present. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging scans of the head of a patient with a large left frontal cyst were segmented to construct a finite element model to stud…

Brain tumor detection and segmentation using deep learning.

OBJECTIVES: Brain tumor detection, classification and segmentation are challenging due to the heterogeneous nature of brain tumors. Different deep learning-based algorithms are available for object detection; however, the performance of detection algorithms on brain tumor data has not been widely explored. Therefore, we aim to compare different object detection algorithms (Faster R-CNN, YOLO & SSD) for brain tumor detection on MRI data. Furthermore, the best-performing detection network is paired with a 2D U-Net for pixel-wise segmentation of abnormal tumor cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The p…

Rehabilitation Considerations in Women with Traumatic Brain Injury.

This review highlights the physiological, hormonal, and hematological changes following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in women. Younger women may experience worse outcomes due to higher cerebral pressures, while hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause further influence TBI recovery. Postmenopausal women face higher risks of osteoporosis and fall-related TBIs. Psychological impacts include higher rates of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Social challenges and sexual dysfunction are prevalent, impacting community and vocational reintegration. Tailored…

Flexible metasurface for improving brain imaging at 7T.

PURPOSE: Ultra-high field MRI offers unprecedented detail for noninvasive visualization of the human brain. However, brain imaging is challenging at 7T due to the B   1 + $$ {}_1^{+} $$ field inhomogeneity, which results in signal intensity drops in temporal lobes and a bright region in the brain center. This study aims to evaluate using a metasurface to improve brain imaging at 7T and simplify the investigative workflow. METHODS: Two flexible metasurfaces comprising a periodic structure of copper strips and parallel-plate capacitive elements printed on an ultra-thin substrate were optim…

Multimodal Brain Tumor Classification Using Convolutional Tumnet Architecture.

The most common and aggressive tumor is brain malignancy, which has a short life span in the fourth grade of the disease. As a result, the medical plan may be a crucial step toward improving the well-being of a patient. Both diagnosis and therapy are part of the medical plan. Brain tumors are commonly imaged with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and computed tomography (CT). In this paper, multimodal fused imaging with classification and segmentation for brain tumors was proposed using the deep learning method. The MRI and CT brain tumor images of the same …

Sex Differences in Human Brain Structure at Birth.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in human brain anatomy have been well-documented, though remain significantly underexplored during early development. The neonatal period is a critical stage for brain development and can provide key insights into the role that prenatal and early postnatal factors play in shaping sex differences in the brain. METHODS: Here, we assessed on-average sex differences in global and regional brain volumes in 514 newborns aged 0-28 days (236 birth-assigned females and 278 birth-assigned males) using data from the developing Human Connectome Project. We also assessed sex-by…

Aneurysmal 99m Tc-HMPAO Uptake in Brain Death.

A 41-year-old man was admitted to hospital due to sudden loss of consciousness. A regional brain perfusion SPECT/low-dose CT showed abnormal 99m Tc-HMPAO uptake in the right hemisphere frontotemporally without any other supratentorial or infratentorial radiotracer uptake. A neuropathological examination disclosed a middle cerebral artery aneurysm. Presumably, vessel wall fibrosis prevented collapse. Multiple transmural dissections of the fibrotic aneurysmal wall were the source of the subarachnoid hemorrhage. This interesting image shows that radiotracer accumulation in cerebral artery aneurys…

Solid brain metastasis mimicking intracerebral hematoma on imaging.

A 79-year-old woman with a history of resection of the ascending colon cancer presented with conscious disturbance, dysarthria, nausea, and dizziness. Computed tomography (CT) revealed striking high-density lesions in the left cerebellum and left frontal lobe with slight perifocal edema. These lesions were suspected the coexistence of spontaneous cerebellar hemorrhage and frontal lobe metastasis, or multiple brain metastases with massive hematoma. Because of the mass effect of the cerebellar lesion and impaired consciousness, she underwent emergency resection of the cerebellar lesion which was…

[Blood-brain barrier breakdown and autoimmune cerebellar ataxia].

Autoimmune cerebellar ataxia is a disease entity that affects the cerebellum and is induced by autoimmune mechanisms. The disease is classified into several etiologies, including gluten ataxia, anti-glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) ataxia, paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, primary autoimmune cerebellar ataxia and postinfectious cerebellar ataxia. The autoimmune response in the periphery cross-reacts with similar antigens in the cerebellum due to molecular mimicry. Breakdown of the blood‒brain barrier (BBB) could potentially explain the vulnerability of the cerebellum during the development …

The Mood-Muscle Meta Bridge (Brain Muscle Axis).

Psychological well-being is essential for the maintenance of good metabolic health. Modern management of most chronic metabolic disorders rightly focusses on improving the health-related quality of life of persons living with disease. In this brief communication we describe the bidirectional association between muscle function and mood (psychological health), explore the various pathways that link these aspects of health, and underscore their clinical implications. This paper emphasizes the importance of maintaining good mental health through exercise and vice a versa.

Targeting Sleep Physiology to Modulate Glymphatic Brain Clearance.

Sleep has been postulated to play an important role in the removal of potentially neurotoxic molecules, such as amyloid-β, from the brain via the glymphatic system. Disturbed sleep, on the other hand, may contribute to the accumulation of neurotoxins in brain tissue, eventually leading to neuronal death. A bidirectional relationship has been proposed between impaired sleep and neurodegenerative processes, which start years before the onset of clinical symptoms associated with conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Given the heavy burden these conditions place on society, it is i…

Adult Human Brain Tissue Cultures to Study NeuroHIV.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) persist under antiretroviral therapy as a complex pathology that has been difficult to study in cellular and animal models. Therefore, we generated an ex vivo human brain slice model of HIV-1 infection from surgically resected adult brain tissue. Brain slice cultures processed for flow cytometry showed >90% viability of dissociated cells within the first three weeks in vitro, with parallel detection of astrocyte, myeloid, and neuronal populations. Neurons within brain slices showed stable dendritic spine density and mature spine morphologies in th…

Compartmentalized ocular lymphatic system mediates eye-brain immunity.

The eye, an anatomical extension of the central nervous system (CNS), exhibits many molecular and cellular parallels to the brain. Emerging research demonstrates that changes in the brain are often reflected in the eye, particularly in the retina1. Still, the possibility of an immunological nexus between the posterior eye and the rest of the CNS tissues remains unexplored. Here, studying immune responses to herpes simplex virus in the brain, we observed that intravitreal immunization protects mice against intracranial viral challenge. This protection extended to bacteria and even tumours, allo…

Inside the Brain: Cerebrospinal Fluid Insights in Meningitis.

Background Our study focused on meningitis, an infection that can spread through the bloodstream as a primary or secondary infection from other body parts, such as sinuses, ears, and lungs. It can affect patients who have experienced trauma or surgery, as well as those with congenital defects like spina bifida. Specifically, we examined bacterial, viral, and tuberculous meningitis (TBM) cases. The primary method for confirming the diagnosis of these types of meningitis is to analyze the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Early diagnosis can utilize cytological and biochemical parameters. Our objective
