BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is not yet known if transbronchial cryobiopsy (TCB) is a reliable and safe diagnostic tool in the investigation of interstitial lung disease (ILD). To date, there have been no studies directly comparing the value of TCB with that of surgical lung biopsy (SLB). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the diagnostic value of hand ultrasound (US) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and to explore its relevance within a combined diagnostic approach.
METHODS: 224 patients with suspected SSc were consecutively included. They all had US evaluation assessing the presence of fibrotic tenosynovitis (fibrotic TS) and ulnar artery occlusion (UAO). The final diagnosis of SSc was based on the clinical evaluation of a board of experts independently of any pre-established classification criteria.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is one of the most important preventable causes of childhood mortality and morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to define the clinical and radiological features of FBA and investigate the diagnostic value of various parameters used to diagnose FBA.
METHODS: The medical records of 147 children who were admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of suspected FBA were examined. The sensitivity and specificity of the parameters used for the diagnosis of FBA and their predictive values were calculated.

Ciliary aplasia is a rare congenital disease that alters the normal function of the mucociliary apparatus in several organs. Patients generally present with severe recurrent and chronic infections of the airways. A high suspect of this disorder is mandatory to perform correct diagnosis and provide prompt treatment. The authors describe the history of two siblings affected by primary ciliary aplasia that was associated with hydrocephalus in one case. A careful description of diagnostic procedures and treatment of this extremely rare disorder is also presented.
