BACKGROUND: Cervical neural foraminal stenosis is a common and debilitating condition affecting people between the ages 40-60. Although it is established that MRI is the best method of scanning the neural foramen, the question remains whether there is a role for three-dimensional MRIs and whether it is possible to develop a computer-aided automated grading system to establish the degree of clinically relevant cervical foraminal stenosis.
OBJECTIVE: The study's objective is to conduct a literature review of existing or recently developed automated grading systems for the cervical neural forame

The American College of Radiology has published appropriateness criteria to help guide when to use MRI. Many health insurance carriers use proprietary clinical guidelines for prior authorization of imaging studies. The purpose of this study was to compare the specific criteria in those guidelines, for neck pain both with and without radicular symptoms. An online search was conducted to identify the guidelines for authorization of cervical spine MRI used by the largest commercial insurance carriers in the United States by market share. Guidelines were analyzed for neck pain with and without rad

BACKGROUND: There have been reports on the significant canal cross-sectional area (CSA) expansion difference between pre- and post-operation, but no comparison of CSA expansion between the hinge-side area (Area H) and the open-side area (Area O) has been reported. This study aimed to measure the spinal CSA expansion between Area H and Area O retrospectively after open-door laminoplasty using new titanium spacers and evaluated this common decompression procedure's effectiveness.

Cylindrical cages were known to cause subsidence after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF); hence, they were gradually replaced by box-shaped cages. However, this phenomenon has been inconclusive due to limited information and short-term results. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify risk factors for subsidence after ACDF using titanium double cylindrical cages with mid-term follow-up periods. This retrospective study included 49 patients (76 segments) diagnosed with cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy caused by disc herniation, spondylosis, and ossification of the posterior longi

OBJECTIVES: Only 21 states have mandatory helmet laws for pediatric bicyclists. This study sought to determine the incidence of helmeted riders among pediatric bicyclists involved in a collision and hypothesized the risk of a serious head and cervical spine injuries to be higher in nonhelmeted bicyclists (NHBs) compared with helmeted bicyclists (HBs).
METHODS: The Pediatric Trauma Quality Improvement Program (2014-2016) was queried for pediatric (age <16 years) bicyclists involved in a collision. Helmeted bicyclists were compared with NHBs. A serious injury was defined by an abbreviated injur

BACKGROUND: Posterior facetectomy or lateral mass resection is often used during cervical dumbbell tumor resection, jeopardizing the stability of cervical spine. The space after resection of one or more lateral masses, if left unfilled might hamper bone fusion and structural support.
PURPOSE: There were the aims to obtain the relevant morphometry of the lateral mass of the subaxial cervical spine (C3-C7) and to design a lateral mass prosthesis for the posterior reconstruction of the cervical spine.
METHODS: The computed tomography (CT) scans of healthy volunteers were obtained. RadiAnt DICOM

OBJECTIVE: Dural ossification (DO) is common in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). The existence of DO makes surgery challenging and increases the risk of complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, distribution and radiological characteristics of DO associated with OPLL.
METHODS: From January 2017 to January 2019, 55 patients with cervical OPLL were treated in our single center using an anterior cervical approach microsurgery. Preoperative CT images of decompressed segments were evaluated to identify imaging signs of DO. The '

OBJECTIVE: Cervical fractures with ankylosing spondylitis (CAS) are a specific type of spinal fracture with poor stability, low healing rate, and high disability rate. Its treatment is mainly surgical, predominantly through the anterior approach, posterior approach, and the anterior-posterior approach. Although many clinical studies have been conducted on various surgical approaches, controversy still exists concerning the choice of these surgical approaches by surgeons. The authors present here a systematic evaluation and meta-analysis exploring the utility of the anterior-posterior approach

INTRODUCTION: The Neck Disability Index (NDI) is a well-established measure for patients with cervical myelopathy, radiculopathy, or myeloradiculopathy. Few studies have examined the relationship between NDI and mental health outcomes after anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF). Our study sets out to determine the possible correlations between NDI and mental health outcome measures after ACDF.
METHODS: A prospectively maintained surgical registry was retrospectively reviewed for elective ACDF procedures from December 2013 to December 2019. Demographic and perioperative characteristic

OBJECTIVE: C1/2 cervical pedicle screw fixation is a well-known procedure for treating severely damaged and unstable C1/2 fractures. On the other hand, C1/C2 screw fixation is not safe and can lead to potentially disastrous consequences. The importance of personalized 3-dimensional (3D) printed navigational guides in avoiding these consequences cannot be overstated.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the neuroimaging data of 16 patients who had undergone fixation for treatment of C1/2 diseases. We created patient-specific C1/2 models and drill guide models using open-source 3D editing softw

PURPOSE: To evaluate and describe the morphologic features of the C2 pedicle in patients with basilar invagination (BI) for informing the placement of pedicle screws. C2 pedicle screw placement is an important surgical technique for the treatment of atlantoaxial instability in patients with BI. However, no systematic and comprehensive anatomical study of the C2 pedicle in patients with BI has been reported.
METHODS: The data from 100 patients diagnosed with BI (BI group) and 100 patients without head or cervical disease (control group) were included in the study. Radiographic parameters, incl
