Recombinant Marek's disease virus expressing VP1 and VP2 proteins provides robust immune protection against chicken infectious anemia virus.

Chicken infectious anemia (CIA) is a highly contagious disease caused by the chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV), and it poses a serious … lity of the recombinant virus. In animal studies, vaccination of one-day-old specific-pathogen-free chickens with rMDV induced high levels of CIAV-specific antibodies (1 × 105) and neutralizing antibodies (1:25) and a potent cellular immune response. Moreover, rMDV vaccination conferred an 85% protective index against challenge with a highly virulent strai …

The miR-29a/c-3p/HMCCR pathway is a potential mechanism by which chicken bursa of Fabricius responds to stress affecting immune response.

The bursa of Fabricius (BF), a central immune organ of birds, plays a critical role in immune regulation. Cholesterol metabolism is an important pathway for regulating lymphocyte proliferation and activation. However, the mechanisms by which cholesterol metabolism influences immune regulation in avian BF remain unclear. In this study, dexamethasone (Dex) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) attenuated vaccine were used to simulate stress and induce immune response in chickens, respectively. The dynamic expression patterns and interrelationships of B cell receptor signaling subunit β (CD79B), sphi…

In-situ potassium hydroxide catalysis improves bio-oil composition and bone-char quality during pyrolysis of chicken meat-bone waste.

The poultry industry generates significant amounts of chicken meat-bone waste (MBW). This study analysed the MBW pyrolysis products and evaluated the effects of potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a catalyst. Both untreated and KOH-impregnated MBW were pyrolysed at 400-800 °C. KOH addition increased biochar and gas yields but reduced bio-oil yield, and significantly improved bio-oil quality by reducing the yield of oxygenated and nitrogenous compounds. At 500 °C, KOH addition reduced the production of oxygenated compounds, mostly acids, in bio-oil by 85 % compared to non-catalysed pyrolysis. It also

Can all surgical trainees be trained to proficiency for a robotic urethro-vesical anastomotic task using a chicken model? A prospective, randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Proficiency based progression (PBP) is a very effective method of training and has been adopted by the European Robotic Surgical Section (ERUS) for robotic skills training. No study has addressed whether all learners can be trained to the proficiency benchmark. In this study, we evaluated: 1) if all trainees reached a quantitatively defined proficiency benchmark for a robotic suturing and knot tying anastomosis task; and 2) the number of training trials required. METHODS: In a multi-center, prospective, randomized, study, 48 participants were randomized to: 1) a PBP group that rec

Emergence and characteristics of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Infantis harboring the pESI plasmid in chicken slaughterhouses in South Korea.

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Infantis (S. Infantis), a major cause of human salmonellosis, is commonly associated with transmission via contaminated chicken meat. This study, as part of the national Salmonella monitoring program, assessed the prevalence of S. enterica, including S. Infantis, in chicken slaughterhouses across South Korea from 2014-2022. The presence of a megaplasmid, known as plasmid of emerging S. Infantis (pESI), was confirmed. This confirmation was based on multidrug-resistant and third-generation cephalosporin-resistant S. Infantis isolates using whole-genome

miR-1458 is inhibited by low concentrations of Vitamin B6 and targets TBX6 to promote the formation of spermatogonial stem cells in Rugao Yellow Chicken.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) have vast application prospects in livestock and poultry production, genetic engineering, and medical research. However, the scarcity of SSCs and the complexity of their development limit the elucidation and verification of the mechanism of SSCs in vitro. Although miRNAs have been identified as critical players in germ cell development, upstream regulatory mechanisms by which miRNAs regulate SSCs formation are rarely reported. In this study, miR-1458, which was differentially expressed during SSCs formation, was selected by transcriptomic sequencing. We found t

Very virulent infectious bursal disease virus infection triggered microscopic changes, apoptosis, and inflammatory cytokines imbalance in chicken spleen and thymus.

Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) can cause a highly contagious disease, resulting in severe damage to the immune system that causes immunosuppression in young chickens. Both spleen and thymus are important immune organs, which play a key role in eliciting protective immune responses. However, the effects of very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) strain LJ-5 infection on chicken spleen and thymus are still unknown. In the present study, 3-week-old specific pathogen-free chickens were infected with vvIBDV for 1-5 days. The vvIBDV infection significantly increased the spleen index and decreased the th…

Determinants of Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence Factors in the Genome of Escherichia coli APEC 36 Strain Isolated from a Broiler Chicken with Generalized Colibacillosis.

Objective: Multidrug-resistant, highly pathogenic Escherichia coli strains are the primary causative agents of intestinal and extraintestinal human diseases. The extensive utilization of antibiotics for farm animals has been identified as a contributing factor to the emergence and dissemination of E. coli strains that exhibit multidrug resistance and possess high pathogenic potential. Consequently, a significant research objective is to examine the genetic diversity of pathogenic E. coli strains and to identify those that may pose a threat to human health. Methods: In this study, we present th

Synergistic effects of gamma irradiation/salmide®, a sodium chlorite-based oxy-halogen, on microbiological control and the shelf life of chicken breasts.

A novel portable chamber was developed to extend the shelf life of chicken breasts through a synergistic treatment of gamma irradiation and Salmide®, a sodium chlorite-based oxy-halogen. This combination successfully enhanced the shelf life by utilizing a low dosage of gamma irradiation alongside low concentrations of Salmide (200 ppm sodium chlorite). Fresh chicken breast samples were treated with gamma irradiation, then packed in ice containing Salmide within the portable chamber, and subsequently stored for 20 days in a refrigerator at 4 °C ± 1. The study investigated aerobic bacterial coun

Comparative phylogenomics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli revealed a wide diversity of clones and plasmids in Spanish chicken meat.

Animal food products are important sources of zoonotic agents, increasing the risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria from farm to fork. Therefore, we aimed to detect and fully characterise Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli from the poultry sector in a One Health approach. From December 2021 to March 2022, 48 chicken meat samples were collected from 16 establishments in La Rioja (Northern Spain). Antibiotic susceptibility testing was assessed by the disk-diffusion method. Forty E. coli isolates were recovered from 33 of the 48 chicken meat samples tested (68.8

Beta-adrenergic blockade via atenolol negatively affects body and heart mass and renal morphology in the developing chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus).

Atenolol is a widely prescribed β1-cardioselective blocker. We studied atenolol effects on cardiac and renal development in day 18 (D18) chicken embryos. Embryos were dosed with atenolol (3 μg atenolol/g estimated embryo mass) for three days during one of the mesonephric kidney stage (D7-D9), mesonephric-metanephric stage (D11-D13), or metanephric stage (D15-D17), and then sampled on D18. Wet embryo body mass in atenolol-treated groups was reduced at D18 (P < 0.01). Wet heart mass of atenolol-treated embryos was significantly (P < 0.01) reduced in the mesonephric stage on D18. Similarly, kidne
