Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management on Negative Mood and Cardiac Autonomic Activity in ICD Recipients.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral intervention studies in patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) show promise in improving psychosocial outcomes but inconclusive effects on cardiovascular outcome. We assessed the effects of cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) on mood state and potentially arrhythmogenic cardiovascular responses to mental stress in ICD patients, in support of further larger scale arrhythmia trials. METHODS: A total of 103 ICD recipients were randomly assigned to 10-week programs of CBSM or "Patient Education" (ED). Of these, 83 patients continued to eithe

Vagus nerve stimulation therapy for treatment-resistant PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common and debilitating, and many individuals do not respond to existing therapies. We developed a fundamentally novel neuromodulation-based therapy for treatment-resistant PTSD. This approach is premised on coupling prolonged exposure therapy, a first-line evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy that directs changes within fear networks, with concurrent delivery of short bursts of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), which enhance synaptic plasticity. METHODS: We performed a first-in-human prospective open-label early feasibility study (EFS) …

Improving efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment of Parkinson disease gait disorders.

Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes motor and cognitive deficits, presenting complex challenges for therapeutic interventions. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a type of neuromodulation that can produce plastic changes in neural activity. rTMS has been trialed as a therapy to treat motor and non-motor symptoms in persons with Parkinson disease (PwP), particularly treatment-refractory postural instability and gait difficulties such as Freezing of Gait (FoG), but clinical outcomes have been variable. We suggest improving rTMS neuromodulation t

Altered resting-state functional connectivity of the default mode and central executive networks following cognitive processing therapy for PTSD.

Psychotherapy research is increasingly targeting both psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of therapeutic change. This trend is evident in and applicable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment research given the high nonresponse rate of individuals with PTSD who undergo cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Functional connectivity analyses investigating disrupted brain networks across mental disorders have been employed to understand both mental disorder symptoms and therapeutic mechanisms. However, few studies have examined pre-post CBT brain changes in PTSD using functional

Cognitive flexibility and Agouti-related protein in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive flexibility and the flexible learning and relearning of stimulus-reward-associations are important for decision-making and goal-directed behavior. Studies on patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) have shown difficulties in cognitive functions associated with malnutrition and extreme underweight. However, to date we find a lack of neuropsychological studies on cognitive flexibility among adolescent patients with AN. Furthermore, the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, we aim to examine cognitive functions, especially reward association learning, as

Comparative neuroprotective and cognitive effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells, secretome, and exosomes in a rat model of pilocarpine-induced epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, neuronal degeneration, and cognitive impairment. Current antiepileptic therapies mainly control seizures and do not effectively prevent epileptogenesis or restore neurological function. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HuMSCs) and their cell-free derivatives, including secretome and exosomes, have emerged as promising regenerative therapies. This study aimed to compare the neuroprotective and cognitive effects of HuMSCs, secretome, and exosomes in a rat model of pilocarpine-induced

The Applicability of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a third-generation cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), has proved its efficacy amidst various mental disorders. A growing body of studies has shown that ACT can improve obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) severity in recent years. To assess the effect of ACT on OCD, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide a basis for therapists to use different psychological dimensions of ACT for OCD. METHODS: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, EBSCO Host, and literature references were searched until May 2021. Randomized controll…
