High-intensity physical exercise disrupts implicit memory in mice: involvement of the striatal glutathione antioxidant system and intracellular signaling.

Physical exercise is a widely accepted behavioral strategy to enhance overall health, including mental function. However, there is controversial evidence showing brain mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage and decreased neurotrophin levels after high-intensity exercise, which presumably worsens cognitive performance. Here we investigated learning and memory performance dependent on different brain regions, glutathione antioxidant system, and extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), serine/threonine protein kinase (AKT), cAMP response element binding (CREB) and dopamine

An education model for otitis media care field-tested in Latin America.

The World Health Organization has designated the teaching of otitis media management skills a "priority" status. Effective treatment of ear disease requires that the physician be both informationally educated as well as physically trained to use otoscopy. Little is known about how well this education can be provided in a short time and in a foreign country. To more objectively assess teaching effect, results of an education session for rural Mexican pediatric primary-care providers who were given an intensive otitis media lecture and otoscopy skills workshop in 1990 were evaluated. To test imm

Drug effects on cognitive function in mice determined by the non-matching to sample task using a 4-arm maze.

A new task for the analysis of drug effects on the cognitive function in mice was investigated using a 4-arm maze with three selectable arms. Each trial consisted of a forced run either to the right or left arm containing a food pellet, which was changed for each trial, followed by a free-choice run after a delay (0-120 sec). The correct response was to turn to the arm 180 degrees opposite from the forced one. Entrance into the center arm in the free-choice run, which was called the non-reward response, was not reinforced at any time. As the delay became longer, correct responses decreased, bu

Immersive Virtual Reality-Supported Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Patients With Mild to Borderline Intellectual Disabilities and Substance Use Disorders: Two Exploratory Studies.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are prevalent and characterized by high relapse rates. Individuals with mild to borderline intellectual disability (MBID) are more likely to develop SUDs and face barriers within treatment related to difficulties they experience with abstract thinking, verbal skills, and generalizing learned strategies to real-world contexts. Therefore, experiential, context-rich approaches are needed that reduce reliance on retrospective verbal reflection, support in-context identification of triggers, and allow the rehearsal of coping responses. Immersive virtual re

StressModEx--Physiotherapist-led Stress Inoculation Training integrated with exercise for acute whiplash injury: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Whiplash associated disorders are the most common non-hospitalised injuries following a road traffic crash. Up to 50% of individuals who experience a whiplash injury will not fully recover and report ongoing pain and disability. Most recovery, if it occurs, takes place in the first 2-3 months post injury, indicating that treatment provided in the early stages is critical to long-term outcome. However, early management approaches for people with acute whiplash associated disorders are modestly effective. One reason may be that the treatments have been non-specific and have not tar

AI anxiety and AI dependence among undergraduates: a moderated mediation model of AI self-efficacy and AI literacy.

BACKGROUND: The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education offers transformative learning potential but has concurrently triggered psychological challenges, specifically AI anxiety and AI dependence. While these phenomena are increasingly prevalent, the psychological mechanisms converting affective strain into behavioral reliance remain underexplored. Grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Theory and Conservation of Resources Theory, this study investigates the relationship between AI anxiety and AI dependence among undergraduates. Specifically, it examines whether AI self

The softfoot pro at the cybathlon: kinematic, metabolic, and user performance evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic feet are essential for restoring independent mobility in individuals with lower-limb loss. However, most commercial prosthetic feet rely on elastic elements and rigid, flat soles, limiting adaptability to uneven terrain and compromising user stability. Originally developed for robotic applications, the SoftFoot introduced an adaptive sole architecture inspired by the biomechanics of the human plantar fascia to improve ground conformity and gait stability. Building on this concept, we introduced the SoftFoot Pro at Cybathlon 2024 - a prosthetic counterpart that integrates

Intermittent hypoxia training enhances Aβ endocytosis by plaque associated microglia via VPS35-dependent TREM2 recycling in murine Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition in the brain parenchyma is a crucial initiating step in the amyloid cascade hypothesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Furthermore, dysfunction of plaque-associated microglia, also known as disease-associated microglia (DAM) has been reported to accelerate Aβ deposition and cognitive impairment. Our previous research demonstrated that intermittent hypoxia training (IHT) improved AD pathology by upregulating autophagy in DAM, thereby enhancing oligomeric Aβ (oAβ) clearance. Considering that oAβ internalization is the initial stage of oAβ clearance

Contribution of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics to predict initial referrals to psychosocial interventions in patients with serious mental illness.

AIMS: Psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) is at the core of psychiatric recovery. There is a paucity of evidence regarding how the needs and characteristics of patients guide clinical decisions to refer to PSR interventions. Here, we used explainable machine learning methods to determine how socio-demographic and clinical characteristics contribute to initial referrals to PSR interventions in patients with serious mental illness. METHODS: Data were extracted from the French network of rehabilitation centres, REHABase, collected between years 2016 and 2022 and analysed between February and Septe

Integrating peripheral blood and brain transcriptomics to identify immunological features associated with Alzheimer's disease in mild cognitive impairment patients.

BACKGROUND: Immune system dysfunction has been proven to be an important pathological event in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as a transitional stage between normal cognitive function and AD, was an important research object for the screening of early diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for AD. However, systematic assessment of peripheral immune system changes in MCI patients and consistent analysis with that in the CNS were still lacking. METHODS: Peripheral blood transcriptome data from the AddNeuroMed Cohort (n = 711) was used as a training dataset to ass

Safety and efficacy of plasma transfusion from exercise-trained donors in patients with early Alzheimer's disease: protocol for the ExPlas study.

INTRODUCTION: Given that exercise training reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), induces changes in the blood composition and has widespread systemic benefits, it is reasonable to hypothesise that exercised plasma (ExPlas) may have rejuvenative properties. The main objective is to test safety and tolerability of transfusing ExPlas from young, healthy, fit adults to patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early AD. The study is a pilot for a future efficacy study. The key secondary objectives are examining the effect of plasma transfusions on cognitive function, fitn
