Cystic fibrosis is characterized by abnormal mucous secretions in the lungs that favor the proliferation of colonizing bacteria, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus being the most isolated, however, other less known species could also have an impact on the health of the patient. Here we demonstrate the isolation and antibiotic resistance profiles of Inquilinus limosus, a rarely reported multidrug resistant bacterium, and compare them to a co-infectant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Likewise, we found that co-infection with both bacteria promotes increased formation of neut

Although co-infections of Trypanosoma vivax, Anaplasma spp., and Babesia spp. have been reported, knowledge gaps remain that need to be addressed. The present study evaluated the efficacy of enrofloxacin (7.5 mg/kg) against A. marginale in naturally infected cattle and cattle experimentally co-infected with T. vivax by observation of the variation in A. marginale parasitemia and packed cell volume (PCV) for 39 days. Bovines were distributed into two groups, each with six calves: T01 = animals immunosuppressed with dexamethasone and with latent anaplasmosis; T02 = animals immunosuppressed with

Invasive infections due to Neisseria meningitidis in Colombia are unusual in newborns, in contrast to infections due to Plasmodium vivax which is one of the main pathogens related to the presentation of fever in this age group, especially in the indigenous population. We report a case of co-infection of these two microorganisms in a child.

OBJECTIVE: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is associated with age-related chronic disease, and co-infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) may compound disease risk. We aimed to assess the frequency of CMV infection and its relationship with age among EBV seropositive individuals in an Indigenous Amazonian population.
METHODS: We report concentrations of CMV and EBV antibodies in dried blood spot samples collected from 157 EBV positive Shuar participants aged 15-86 years (60.5% female) to assess CMV infection rate. We used logistic and linear regression models to examine associations among CMV

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is an acute viral zoonotic disease. Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a newly emerging viral disease and it is caused by "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)". In this article, a case diagnosed with CCHF and COVID-19 coinfection confirmed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and its management was presented. A thirtyfive years old female patient admitted to the hospital with the complaint of fever for one day and common body pain. It was learned that three days before the onset of her complaints, she removed a tick a…

Dengue virus and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 coexist in dengue-endemic countries; therefore, the adoption of preventive measures is essential to control the spread of both viruses. We conducted an ecological study to compare the temporal patterns of the incidence of dengue before and during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Peru. A time-series analysis comparing the incidence of dengue using a Student's t test with variance correction was performed. Poisson regression was applied to determine the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of dengue before and during the C

INTRODUCTION: The 2015 dengue outbreak in southern Taiwan caused substantial mortality. We analyzed the causes of death among these patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a medical center in Tainan from August 2015 to December 2015. Dengue was diagnosed based on the detection of serum dengue NS1 antigen, IgM, or viral RNA in the blood. Causes of death were retrieved from chart reviews by three clinicians.
RESULTS: There were 4488 cases of dengue in the study hospital, with an in-hospital fatality rate of 1.3% (60 cases). The mean age of the 60 fatal cases

The epidemiological behavior of six Leptospira serovarieties was analyzed by spatial autocorrelation and co-occurrence of leptospirosis, diagnosed in goat herds located in the State of Guanajuato, Mexico. A total of 1650 goat serum samples were analyzed by microscopic agglutination (MAT). True prevalence (Pv) and 95% confidence interval (CI95) were determined. Spatial autocorrelation was calculated using the spdep package, applying the global Moran's I and local Moran's I of Leptospira in Guanajuato. The probabilistic model of co-occurrence was applied using the co-occur package. Seroprevalenc

The current study was conducted to assess the prevalence and odds ratio (OR) of co-infection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and intestinal parasites (IPs). English databases were searched. A total of 18 studies including 14 studies with cross-sectional design (a total of 3739 participants) and 4 studies with case-control design (397 patients and 320 controls) met the eligibility criteria. The pooled prevalence of H. pylori, intestinal parasite infections (IPIs), and their co-infections in different populations were 48.3% (95% CI, 34.1-62.8%), 15.4% (95% CI, 10-22.8%), and 11% (95% CI, 6.7-

BACKGROUND: Due to the overlapping clinical features of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and influenza, parallels are often drawn between the two diseases. Patients with pre-existing cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are at a higher risk for severe manifestations of both illnesses. Considering the high transmission rate of COVID-19 and with the seasonal influenza approaching in late 2020, the dual epidemics of COVID-19 and influenza pose serious cardiovascular implications. This review highlights the similarities and differences between influenza and COVID-19 and the potential risks associated

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma marginale is an obligate intracellular bacterium and the main cause of bovine anaplasmosis in tropical and subtropical regions. In Egypt, data regarding the prevalence of A. marginale in ruminant hosts and of the circulating genotypes is lacking. This study therefore aimed to (i) investigate the presence, epidemiology and genotypes of A. marginale in cattle and buffaloes in Egypt, (ii) to evaluate suitable diagnostic tools and (iii) to identify co-infections of A. marginale with other selected tick-borne pathogens.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 394 animals (

Parasites co-infecting hosts can interact directly and indirectly to affect parasite growth and disease manifestation. We examined potential interactions between two common parasites of house finches: the bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum that causes conjunctivitis and the intestinal coccidian parasite Isospora sp. We quantified coccidia burdens prior to and following experimental infection with M. gallisepticum, exploiting the birds' range of natural coccidia burdens. Birds with greater baseline coccidia burdens developed higher M. gallisepticum loads and longer lasting conjunctivitis follow

INTRODUCTION: In some developing countries, tuberculosis and brucellosis, which are commom causes of spinal infections, are still common infectious diseases. However, co-occurrence of spinal tuberculosis and brucellosis is rare.
METHODOLOGY: We report a case a 47-year-old male engaged in aquaculture with a medical history of numbness, weakness, fever, and night sweats in both upper limbs for about 10 days. Serum agglutination test (SAT) for Brucella revealed brucella infection. Cervical computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested C6, C7 vertebral destruction a

BACKGROUND: Super-spreaders are individuals infecting disproportionately large numbers of contacts. They probably play a crucial role in the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We describe a super-spreading event within a team working in an open-space office and investigate factors potentially having facilitated SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, semi-structured telephone interviews with all team members were carried out to identify symptoms, contacts, and adherence to basic hygiene measures. During site visits, we g

We report a rare case of severe Plasmodium knowlesi malaria and dengue co-infection in a 36-year-old lady with hyperparasitaemia, metabolic acidosis, haemolysis and acute kidney injury. She was in shock requiring inotropic support and elective intubation. She had pericardial tamponade which necessitate pericardiocentesis to allow for haemodynamic stability during haemodialysis. She underwent haemodialysis, was ventilated for six days and stayed in hospital for 29 days. She was discharged home well with almost complete renal recovery. Physicians must have a high degree of suspicion for dengue c

SETTING: Kenya, 2012-2015.
OBJECTIVE: To explore whether there is a gender difference in all-cause mortality among smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB)/ HIV co-infected patients treated for tuberculosis (TB) between 2012 and 2015 in Kenya.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort of 9,026 smear-positive patients aged 15-49 years. All-cause mortality during TB treatment was the outcome of interest. Time to start of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation was considered as a proxy for CD4 cell count. Those who took long to start of ART were assumed to have high CD4 cell count.
RESULTS: Of the 9,02
