Augmentative and Alternative Communication Generative Language Intervention: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Children with a wide range of impairments such as cerebral palsy and childhood apraxia of speech can benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). When AAC is provided, it frequently focuses on improving basic pragmatic skills such as requesting or on early semantic skills such as vocabulary acquisition. To address this issue, the primary goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of implementing the AAC Generative Language Intervention (AAC-GLI) program on the aided expressive grammar of preschoolers with relatively intact receptive language skills who could bene

Short communication: Th1 immunity is associated with Staphylococcus chromogenes intramammary infection.

Staphylococcus chromogenes is one of the most prevalent non-aureus staphylococci associated with persistent intramammary infections (IMIs) in dairy cattle. However, the local cellular immune response to naturally occurring S. chromogenes IMI remains poorly characterized. Thus, this study aimed to assess milk T cell subsets, macrophages, neutrophils, and key intracellular cytokine production by milk T cells in mammary gland quarters naturally infected with S. chromogenes. Milk samples were used from non-infected and S. chromogenes-infected quarters from clinically healthy Holstein-Friesian dair

Association of physical activity with arterial stiffness and pulsatility in a community-based cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Central arterial stiffness and pressure pulsatility are key measures of arterial health and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Acute physical activity (PA) improves vascular function; however, its relationship with arterial health across varying habitual PA levels remains understudied. METHODS: We analyzed Framingham Heart Study (FHS) data (Generation 2: Exam 8, 2005-2008, n = 2999 and Generation 3: Exam 1, 2002-2005, n = 4064). Habitual PA was assessed using a standardized questionnaire. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (niCFPWV, inverse-transformed CFPWV), central pulse pressure

[Management of Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Adults - Argentine Society of Infectious Diseases].

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. Epidemiological surveillance indicates that Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the most frequent etiological agent and the leading cause of mortality. However, with the advent of new diagnostic techniques, viral etiology has gained priority. Chest X-ray is considered mandatory to confirm the diagnosis and establish the spread. Microbiological, antigen, molecular, biomarker, and carriage tests have specific indications and a role to play in reconsidering empirical treatments. Severity scales are u

Frailty and falls in older adults: risk assessment and management for community nurses.

Frailty and falls are highly prevalent among community-dwelling older adults and are linked through a bidirectional relationship that increases the risk of injury, hospitalisation, functional decline and mortality. Community nurses play a central role in early identification and prevention. This article examines the relationship between frailty and falls, and outlines practical approaches to risk assessment and management in community nursing practice. The authors present a clinically focused synthesis of contemporary evidence and national guidance relating to frailty and falls in community-dw

The Impact of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics on Service Access and Engagement.

The mental health system struggles to engage people with severe mental illnesses (SMI) and substance use disorders (SUD) in care. Certified community behavioral health clinics (CCBHCs) are designed to meet service gaps by providing person-centered, comprehensive, coordinated, accessible, and quality care. This study examines the impact of the CCBHC model on access and engagement of service users utilizing administrative data. There was a significant increase in existing and new service users (χ2 = 5.91; p < .05) after the CCBHC implementation and among existing service users with SMI (χ2 = 43.

Lung cancer screening uptake in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in community settings.

Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly those with a history of smoking, are at increased risk for lung cancer. However, real-world data on the use of low dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for lung cancer in this population are lacking. Therefore, we assessed the rates, trends, and predictors of LDCT screening among patients with a smoking history and RA. A retrospective cohort study using the IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus for Academics Closed Health Plan claims database was conducted. Patients with RA diagnosed in 2014-2023, aged 50-77 years, and with a history of smoking a

Spatial analysis of sheep fascioliasis in rural communities of the Southern highlands of Peru.

Sheep fascioliasis causes considerable economic losses globally, yet risk factors for infection in Andes Highlands remain poorly characterized. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the risk factors of sheep fascioliasis in rural communities of the Southern highlands of Peru. Data on farm and animal characteristics, management practices, and water sources were collected. Stool samples were geographically tagged and examined microscopically for Fasciola and other parasites eggs. A total of 3,518 sheep from 268 farms were evaluated, of which 40.6% (1,429/3,518) were infected with F.

Tokophobia and associated factors in pregnancy: A community-based cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth (tokophobia) impacts maternal health, yet its prevalence and associated factors remain underexplored in Lagos. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of tokophobia and its associated risk and psychological factors. METHODS: This community-based cross-sectional survey, conducted in Lagos, over a 4-month period, involved 855 pregnant women attending antenatal care at Lagos' 57 flagship primary health care centers (PHCs). Fifteen eligible pregnant women who were consecutively selected from each PHC's antenatal clinic list, had in-depth interviews using a stru

Can We Improve the Prediction of Early Onset Mania and Hypomania in the Community?

BACKGROUND: There is broad agreement that the onset of bipolar disorders (BD) can be predicted by using combined estimates of familial, genetic and clinical risk. However, there is a lack of consensus about the operationalisation of different risk attributes (e.g., symptoms vs. sub-threshold syndromes; disorder-specific polygenic risk scores [PRS] vs. multiple-disorder PRS dimensions) and their utility for predicting bipolar type 1 (BD-I) and 2 (BD-II). Likewise, analyses often fail to consider the optimal model for predicting outcomes where true cases will be in the minority. METHODOLOGY: Pr

Incidence of mastoiditis complications in relation to prior community-based antibiotic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between prior community-based antibiotic treatment for acute otitis media (AOM) and the incidence and severity of complications in children hospitalized with acute mastoiditis (AM), noting that this design does not address whether prior antibiotic treatment prevents AM development. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical records of 522 children (age < 15 years) diagnosed with AM at a tertiary medical center between 2015 and 2025. Children were categorized by prior antibiotic exposure: those receiving antibiotics for > 48 h before hospi

Community perceptions of chemsex practices in Türkiye: a cross-sectional online survey.

BACKGROUND: Chemsex, a form of sexualised substance use, is using psychoactive substances to enhance sexual pleasure. It is most commonly practised by gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, transgender and non-binary people. Although chemsex has been increasingly discussed globally, it remains insufficiently studied in many societies due to the stigma and criminalisation of some forms of drug use and sexual behaviour. We aimed to describe community perceptions of chemsex in Türkiye, including perceived substance use patterns, associated benefits and harms and barriers to discussion

Community knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward cutaneous leishmaniasis in central Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most prevalent clinical form of leishmaniasis and remains a significant public health problem, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where it disproportionately affects disadvantaged populations. The disease causes a far-reaching impact to the community where community-level awareness of its transmission, prevention, and treatment often remains low and less studied. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess community knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to CL in the Kambata Zone of Central Ethiopia. METHODS: Ethics statement: Eth

Community perceptions and acceptance of ivermectin for malaria control on Sumba Island, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia has made significant progress in malaria control, however hotspots such as Sumba Island continue to experience high rates of malaria transmission, driven by multiple Anopheles mosquito species. The Sumba Livestock Ivermectin for Malaria (SLIM) trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of ivermectin treatment in livestock as a vector control strategy. This accompanying social science study aimed to explore community perceptions of ivermectin-based malaria interventions, including ivermectin livestock treatment (ITL) and potential mass drug administration (MDA) in humans.

Scabies as a manifestation of structural violence in refugee communities: a case from Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, a neglected tropical disease affecting an estimated 200 million people globally, thrives in overcrowded, resource-limited environments and carries significant stigma. Refugee camps present conditions conducive to its spread, yet little is known about how scabies is experienced and understood in such settings. This study explores scabies as a manifestation of structural violence among Kinyarwanda speaking Congolese refugees in Kigeme camp, Rwanda. METHODS: An ethnographic study was conducted from March to September 2022 using participant observation, 19 in-depth interviews

Predictors of cystobiliary communication in patients undergoing surgery for hepatic hydatid cysts.

Cystobiliary communication (CBC) is a common complication of hepatic hydatid cysts, increasing surgical complexity and postoperative morbidity. Reliable preoperative prediction and intraoperative detection of occult CBC remain challenging. We retrospectively analyzed 106 patients undergoing surgery for hepatic hydatid disease. Patients were classified as CBC or non-CBC based on intraoperative findings. Clinical, laboratory, radiologic, and operative variables were evaluated. Multivariate logistic regression identified independent predictors, and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis

The community drug distributor passport: a case study of training and recognition in Chad.

INTRODUCTION: Community health workers (CHWs), particularly volunteer community drug distributors (CDDs), play essential roles in advancing universal health coverage (UHC) and neglected tropical disease (NTD) control, yet their responsibilities and formal recognition remain poorly defined across health systems. This creates policy-implementation disconnects, especially during mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases, where CDDs deliver critical services amid declining motivation and weak community awareness. METHODS: From 15 September 202

Community Perspectives on Japanese Encephalitis Risk and Prevention in an Endemic Region of Australia.

OBJECTIVE: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne disease caused by JE virus (JEV) infection, detected for the first time in south-eastern Australia in 2022. In New South Wales (NSW), detections of JEV in mosquitoes and animal hosts, human JE cases, and climate and environmental considerations have informed which areas are considered high risk for JEV and which populations are eligible for vaccination (funded by Australian states and territories). However, early evidence indicates slower-than-expected uptake in these high-risk areas. We aimed to explore how community members and health
