Nine patients who had epileptic attacks while playing computer games were studied in the laboratory. Patients had an EEG recorded as well as their response to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) at flash rates of 1-60 fps. Extensive brain pathology attributed to Sarcocystis is described in a heifer and a 2- to 4-month-old calf. These appear to be the first recorded cases of naturally occurring acute sarcocystosis in cattle in sub-Saharan Africa. Sixty-two cases of neurocysticercosis (NCC) were examined over a period of five years. Convulsive seizure was the commonest presentation (57%). The other modes of presentation included features of raised intracranial pressure (19%) meningoencephalitis (9%), "Stroke" like onset (4%) and progressive dementia (6%). Clinical signs were scanty. Six patients had papilloedema, five had hemiparesis while three had isolated cranial nerve palsies. Infants and young children cannot describe symptoms of cardiogenic syncope accurately. If the attention in such cases is focused on the seizure activity that may follow, the patient will be treated inappropriately with anticonvulsants. Photosensitivity has proved to be a useful model to study the acute effects of experimental antiepileptic drugs (AEDs).
