Visual impairment affects over 250 million people globally and carries a significant psychosocial and economic burden. In recent years, rapid advancements in biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine have driven the development of innovative therapies aimed at restoring visual function. Here, we first provide an overview of the visual pathway, imaging modalities, and the psychosocial and economic burden of vision loss. Then we review four vision restoration approaches: gene and stem cell therapies, optogenetics, retinal prosthetic devices, and visual pathway electrical stimulation. For

BACKGROUND: Gastroparesis is a rare complication of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. We evaluate the role of gastric electrical stimulation in medically refractory gastroparesis.
METHODS: Patients with refractory gastroparesis after gastric bypass for morbid obesity were studied. After behavioral and anatomic problems were ruled out, the diagnosis of disordered gastric emptying was confirmed by radionuclide gastric emptying. Temporary endoscopic stimulation was used first to assess response before implanting a permanent device.
RESULTS: Six patients, all women with mean age of 42 years, were identi

The intrinsic properties of plants offer numerous opportunities for scientific and technological advancement. Considerable efforts have been directed toward developing plant-on-chip platforms to investigate cellular responses to external stimuli, including chemical, mechanical, and electrical cues. In this study, we present a fluidic platform using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a printed circuit board (PCB), integrated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) detection. Various experimental conditions were examined, including ionic and pH stimulation, as well as membrane dimensions,

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is widely employed for restoring upper limb motor function post-stroke. However, precise control of fine hand movements remains a significant challenge due to the poorly understood time-varying dynamics governing the translation of electrical stimulation into muscle force and joint motion. This study investigated the dynamic modulation of muscle contraction and finger kinematics under varying NMES durations (0.4s, 0.6s, 1s) in 11 healthy subjects. To decouple evoked muscle contractions from joint motion feedback, Ischemic Nerve Block (INB) was employ

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) has very limited treatment options and therapies to prevent or reverse neurodegeneration remain elusive. Deep brain stimulation (DBS), whereby high-frequency pulses of electricity are delivered continuously to a specific part of the brain, has been trialled as an experimental treatment for AD. In AD patients, continuous, high frequency DBS targeted to the fornix (fx-DBS) has been shown to be safe, but not reliably effective across patients. In movement disorders, high-frequency DBS is thought to act as a virtual lesion, disrupting pathophysiological activ

Spinal cord injuries, whether resulting from traumatic or nontraumatic events, have severe and lasting detrimental effects on individuals, significantly impacting their overall health, mobility, and quality of life. The limited regenerative capacity of the spinal cord is mainly due to neuronal damage, the presence of inhibitory molecules, an impaired immune response, and the formation of glial scars, all of which create a hostile environment for neural repair and functional recovery. The majority of SCIs are caused by traffic accidents and falling objects. The current global treatments used fo

INTRODUCTION: Transcutaneous electrical stimulation is used to stimulate the dorsal roots of the cauda equina. Multiple elicited responses recorded in the lower extremity muscles are called posterior root muscle reflexes (PRMRs). Normal PRMR values in the muscles of healthy lower extremities have yet to be determined.
METHODS: Thirty subjects without known lumbosacral spinal root illness were included in this study. Subsequently, they were subjected to transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the cauda equina. Posterior root muscle reflex was recorded in the four muscle groups of both lower e

BACKGROUND: The vasculature function is mainly regulated by the autonomic nervous system. Importantly, the sensory-motor nervous system also innervates peripheral vessels and has the capacity to modulate vascular tone. Here we investigated the effects of electrical stimulation of a mixed nerve trunk on blood flow in deep arteries and muscle perfusion. Our hypothesis is that stimulation of a mixed nerve can modify blood flow.
METHODS: Twenty-nine healthy participants were included into a randomized-crossover and blinded clinical trial. Each subject received a placebo and two percutaneous perip

Nociceptive input diminishes recovery and increases lesion area after a spinal cord injury (SCI). Recent work has linked these effects to the expansion of hemorrhage at the site of injury. The current article examines whether these adverse effects are linked to a pain-induced rise in blood pressure (BP) and/or flow. Male rats with a low-thoracic SCI were treated with noxious input (electrical stimulation [shock] or capsaicin) soon after injury. Locomotor recovery and BP were assessed throughout. Tissues were collected 3 h, 24 h, or 21 days later. Both electrical stimulation and capsaicin under

Paired corticospinal-motoneuronal stimulation (PCMS) elicits spinal synaptic plasticity in humans with chronic incomplete cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Here, we examined whether PCMS-induced plasticity could be potentiated by acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH), a treatment also known to induce spinal synaptic plasticity in humans with chronic incomplete cervical SCI. During PCMS, we used 180 pairs of stimuli where corticospinal volleys evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation over the hand representation of the primary motor cortex were timed to arrive at corticospinal-motoneuronal synap

Inhibition is a central component of motor control. Although current models emphasize the involvement of frontal networks [1, 2], indirect evidence suggests a potential contribution of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). This region is active during inhibition of upper-limb movements to undesired targets [3], and its stimulation with single magnetic pulses can depress motor-evoked potentials [4, 5]. Also, it has been speculated that alien hand movements caused by focal parietal lesions reflect a release of inhibition from PPC to M1 [6]. Considering these observations, we instructed 16 patient

OBJECTIVE: To compare the knee extensor muscle torque production elicited with 2500-Hz burst-modulated alternating current (BMAC) and with a monophasic pulsed current (MPC) at the maximum tolerated stimulation intensity.
BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is often used for strengthening the quadriceps following knee surgery. Strength gains are dependent on muscle torque production, which is primarily limited by discomfort. Burst-modulated alternating current stimulation is a clinically popular waveform for

Diuretic-induced hypokalaemia has been shown to promote cardiac arrhythmias in hypertensive patients. The present study was designed to determine whether hypokalaemia increases arrhythmic susceptibility of the left ventricle (LV) or the right ventricle (RV), or both. Proarrhythmic effects of hypokalaemic perfusion (2.5 mm K(+) for 30 min) were assessed in isolated guinea-pig heart preparations using simultaneous recordings of volume-conducted electrocardiogram and monophasic action potentials from six ventricular epicardial sites. Effective refractory periods, ventricular fibrillation threshol

We have shown that the inferior colliculus is involved in the integration of defensive reactions. Electrical and chemical stimulation of this structure elicits fear and escape behavior, expressed respectively by immobility (freezing) and wild running, followed by jumps. In this study, we analyzed whether the defensive behavior integrated at this level of the midbrain tectum is also followed by antinociception and its chemical mediation. In addition, we further addressed whether or not the aversive states and the stress-induced analgesia share the same neural substrates in the inferior collicul

Previous studies have shown that methylxanthines such as aminophylline increase the clinical severity and length of electrically elicited limbic afterdischarges in naive and kindled rats without lowering seizure threshold. When fully amygdaloid-kindled rats are electrically stimulated at intertrial stimulation intervals of less than 60 minutes, significant residual inhibition can be demonstrated. The present study examines the effect of three doses of aminophylline (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) on repeated daily stimulations of fully amygdaloid-kindled rats. After 100 mg/kg aminophylline, the first e

In addition to projections through the vagus, cervical sympathetic, and aortic depressor nerves, baroreceptor afferents from the arch of the aorta are thought to rise through a superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) pathway in the rat. We evaluated this possibility, first, by determining the hemodynamic response to electrical stimulation of the SLN in anesthetized rats. Miniaturized pulsed-Doppler flow probes were placed on the right common iliac, superior mesenteric and left renal arteries. Stimulation of the SLN produced frequency-dependent (1-12 Hz) reductions in arterial pressure, heart rate and r

Restoring motor function after stroke necessitates involvement of numerous cognitive systems. However, the impact of damage to motor and cognitive network organization on recovery is not well understood. To discover correlates of successful recovery, we explored imaging characteristics in chronic stroke subjects by combining noninvasive brain stimulation and fMRI. Twenty stroke survivors (6 months or more after stroke) were randomly assigned to a single session of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) or sham during image acquisition. Twenty healthy subjects were included as controls.

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) can provide hearing sensation to individuals where the auditory nerve is damaged. However, patient outcomes with the ABI are typically much poorer than those for cochlear implant recipients. A major limitation to ABI outcomes is the number of implanted electrodes that can produce auditory responses to electric stimulation. One of the greatest challenges in ABI surgery is the intraoperative positioning of the electrode paddle, which must fit snugly within the cochlear nucleus complex. While there presently is no optimal procedure for intraoperative electrode…
