FACTORS AFFECTING ASPIRATION VOLUMES OF BACK-FLUSH NEEDLES AND INFUSION VOLUMES OF VITRECTOMY DEVICE.

PURPOSE: The stability of the eye is important during vitrectomy, which makes it important to balance the infusion rates (IRs) and the aspiration rates (ARs). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the IR from the vitrectomy device and the AR with back-flush needles. METHODS: We compared the ARs of 25-gauge or 27-gauge back-flush needles manufactured by four companies. The AR of balanced salt solution (BSS), ethylene glycol mimicking subretinal fluid, and air was measured for each aspiration pressure. The IR of BSS and air was measured at different intraocular pressures. R

Design optimization and simulated performance evaluation of a self-collimated cardiac SPECT with simultaneous high sensitivity and resolution.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is an important noninvasive molecular imaging technology for the diagnosis and risk stratification of heart diseases. However, since its inception, the clinical impact of cardiac SPECT has been constrained by its reliance on mechanical collimation using a metal apertured-plate structure, which causes an inherent inverse interdependency between the system's resolution and sensitivity. Recently, our group introduced self-collimation (SC) detector architecture in single photon emission imaging: in a structure with multiple lay

PressureDot® Capsule: A Wireless Ingestible Device for Continuous Intra-Abdominal Pressure Monitoring-Design, Validation, and In Vivo Feasibility.

Continuous intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) monitoring is critical for the early detection and management of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). Current standard IAP monitoring is based on intravesical pressure (IVP) monitoring, limited by intermittent measurements, infection risks, and labor-intensive procedures. This study introduces the PressureDot® Capsule, an ingestible, wireless device designed for continuous, non-invasive IAP monitoring by gastrointestinal pressure. The PressureDot® Capsule's performance was evaluated through benchtop and in vivo t

An ingestible capsule for luminance-based diagnosis of mesenteric ischemia.

Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) results from insufficient blood flow to the intestines, leading to tissue necrosis with high morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis is often delayed because of nonspecific symptoms that mimic common gastrointestinal conditions. Current diagnostic methods, such as computed tomography and mesenteric angiography, are complex, costly, and invasive, highlighting the need for a rapid, accessible, and minimally invasive alternative. Here, we present FIREFLI (finding ischemia via reflectance of light), a bioinspired, ingestible capsule designed for luminance-based diagnosis

Radiofrequency Ablation With a Retractable Needle-Tipped Catheter in the Interventricular Septum of Healthy Dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is characterized by hypertrophy of the interventricular septum with the presence of significant left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) pressure gradients, and one approach to reduce LVOT pressure gradients in this context is through endocardial radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA). However, the therapeutic effects of current treatment methods remain to be better improved. Here, we tested the efficacy of RFCA using a retractable needle-tipped catheter (needle catheter). METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight healthy dogs underwent RFCA of the interve

Evaluation of Gas Exchange and Hemocompatibility of an Experimental Oxygenator at Anticipated Human Fetal Flow Rates in Fetal Lambs Using a Dual Oxygenator Platform in the EXTra-Uterine Environment for Neonatal Development (EXTEND) System.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the EXTEND (EXTra-uterine Environment for Neonatal Development) system provides physiologic support of fetal lambs (105-111 days gestational age; GA) via a pumpless arteriovenous circuit using a commercially available oxygenator (Maquet-Ox). However, for anticipated human subjects at 23-28 weeks of GA, a smaller oxygenator is required. To meet this requirement, a proprietary oxygenator (Experimental Oxygenator: Exp-Ox) was developed. METHODS: Fourteen lambs (mean GA 99 days, mean weight at cannulation 1.36 kg) were placed on the EXTEND system. Thereafter, Ex

Three-dimensional quantitative elastography using micro-ultrasound: Proof of concept.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers worldwide, yet there are still limitations to overcome in its diagnostic workflow. Some of these limitations may be addressed by quantitative elastography and micro-ultrasound (microUS). This paper presents the first implementation of volumetric shear wave absolute vibro-elastography (S-WAVE) using the ExactVu™ microUS system. This implementation uses minimal additional hardware, making it conducive to insertion into the clinical workflow. In order to accurately recreate phasors with a frame rate below the Nyquist sampling r

Development of a headgear-based eye protection device for physicians performing fluoroscopy-guided bronchoscopy.

Fluoroscopy-guided bronchoscopy is an essential tool for diagnosing and treating lung diseases, particularly lung cancer. However, prolonged fluoroscopic exposure raises concerns regarding radiation-induced lens injuries in physicians, such as radiation cataracts. In response to the International Commission on Radiological Protection lowering the occupational lens dose limit to an average of 20 mSv/year over 5 years, there is an increasing need for effective lens protection during such procedures. This study has aimed to develop a novel lens protection device specifically designed for bronchos

Cuffless Devices for the Measurement of Blood Pressure: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Conventional cuff-based blood pressure (BP) monitoring has several limitations, including patient discomfort with arm cuff inflation, inconvenience, and limited frequency of readings. Cuffless BP devices, which are increasingly available for purchase on the international market, have the potential to remove barriers to BP measurement in both research and clinical care. However, there are unanswered questions on whether, how, and in what settings these devices may be appropriate for use. Gaps include the need to understand whether the somewhat distinctive and often enormous volume of readings o

Optimizing inter-joint distances of robotic forceps for vertical needle driving in pediatric surgery: a virtual reality simulator study.

PURPOSE: While related studies have explored robotic forceps adaptations for narrow surgical workspaces, most have focused on horizontal needle driving, with limited research on optimizing robotic forceps configurations for vertical needle driving in pediatric choledochojejunostomy. Moreover, the impact of inter-joint distance adjustments on motion volume and obstructed value for vertical needle driving remains unclear, necessitating further investigation. We aimed to evaluate the effect of inter-joint distances in robotic forceps on a needle driving task that simulated vertical needle driving

Jiancheng dual-channel vs. i-gel laryngeal mask airway for fiberoptic bronchoscopy: A randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) procedures have become increasingly lengthy and complex. Maintaining deep sedation while preventing hypoxemia with conventional oropharyngeal/nasopharyngeal airways presents a significant clinical challenge. Supraglottic airway devices, such as the laryngeal mask airway (LMA), may provide improved oxygenation and procedural efficiency during FB. However, despite the variety of LMA designs, no previous studies have definitively established the optimal type of LMA for FB procedures. METHODS: 96 patients were randomized to either the i-gel LMA group (grou

EMG-based evaluation of a detachable two-way propulsion system for manual wheelchairs: rehabilitative effects in older adults with spinal cord injury.

Background: A manual wheelchair is an essential assistive device for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, long-term use typically requires repetitive forward pushing on the pushrims, which overuses anterior upper-body muscles and contributes to shoulder muscle imbalance and pain. To address these issues, a detachable two-way propulsion system was developed to allow both pushing and pulling movements, with the pulling method designed to enhance posterior muscle activation. Methods: Electromyography (EMG) was performed on eight upper-body muscles in eight older adults with SCI (me

Can a novel set of handgrips on a walking frame increase stability and support users when transferring to/from a chair?

INTRODUCTION: One important aspect of walking aid use is transferring safely to the aid from sitting and transferring back to the chair after walking, since these activities have been associated with falls in older adults. Standard frames require their user to push off the chair or ask for help from a carer, which may over time lead to back pain. This study's aim was to assess whether novel handgrips located above the rear feet of a walking frame would facilitate safe transfer as compared to utilizing only the seat cushion or armrests of the chair. METHODS: In a gait lab-based trial 10 health
