Intraorbital organic foreign body--a diagnostic challenge.

Intraorbital organic foreign bodies pose a diagnostic and management challenge to ophthalmologists. A high degree of suspicion of an orbital foreign body is needed when patients present with injuries to the eyelids and orbit. We present a case of retained intraorbital wooden foreign body which was initially undetected. A 10-year-old boy presented to the eye casualty with signs and symptoms suggestive of orbital cellulitis. He was started on intravenous antibiotics and urgent CT of the orbits did not reveal any foreign bodies. There was spontaneous extrusion of a wooden foreign body through the

Comparison of estimates of resting energy expenditure equations in haemodialysis patients.

PURPOSE: Waste products of metabolism accumulate in patients with chronic kidney disease, and require clearance by haemodialysis (HD). We wished to determine whether there was an association between resting energy expenditure (REE) and total energy expenditure (TEE) in HD patients and body composition. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We determined REE by recently validated equations (CKD equation) and compared REE with that estimated by standard equations for REE, and TEE calculated from patient reported physical activity, in HD patients with corresponding body composition measured by dual energy X-ray abs

An interpretable machine-learning model identifies obesity-related metabolic complications in children attending a tertiary obesity clinic.

Childhood obesity-related metabolic complications are common in Northwest China, yet region-specific evidence and risk-stratification tools are lacking. In a single-visit cross-sectional study of 131 children (3-18 years) with overweight or obesity attending a Gansu maternal and child-care hospital, obesity-related metabolic complications (ORMC) were present in 31.3% (dyslipidaemia 16.0%, hyperuricaemia 9.2%, elevated blood pressure 7.6%). An interpretable model combining LASSO-selected adiposity measures (body mass index, neck circumference, body fat percentage) with penalised logistic regres

Nocturnal Hypoxic Exposure Combined with Two-Week Hypoxic Training and Calorie Restriction Improves Lipid Profile and Body Composition in Men with Obesity-Related Hypercholesterolemia: A Controlled Intervention Study.

Despite advances in lifestyle-based therapy, achieving clinically meaningful reductions in blood lipid levels remains a major challenge in obese men with secondary hypercholesterolemia. Hypoxic exposure encompassing both training sessions and nocturnal rest may offer a novel adjunct to conventional interventions; however, no study has evaluated such a protocol in this population. Twenty sedentary men with obesity-related hypercholesterolemia were randomly allocated to a hypoxic group (H) or normoxic control group (C). Both groups completed an identical two-week high-intensity training program

Antidiabetic effects of Gymnema sylvestre and metformin co-therapy in a type 2 diabetic rat model.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. Metformin is the standard therapy, however plant-based adjuncts such as Gymnema sylvestre (GS) are gaining interest for their anti-diabetic potential. AIM: To evaluate the anti-diabetic effects of GS, alone and with metformin, on glycemic control, lipid profile, renal function, and body weight in high-fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T2DM rats. METHODS: Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats (150 ± 20 g) were divided into five groups: Normal control, diabetic c

Effects of combined training on heart rate variability and cardiac function and structure in individuals with grade 1 obesity.

Excess body fat, particularly in the abdominal region, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Conversely, aerobic training can induce beneficial effects on heart rate variability (HRV), as well as on cardiac structure and function, along with favorable changes in body composition. However, the interrelationship between changes in HRV, cardiac parameters, and adiposity induced by combined training (strength training followed by aerobic training; CT) in obese individuals remains unclear. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effects of 24 weeks of CT on body composition, physical fit

Associations of air pollution, road traffic noise, and greenness with adiposity markers in Swedish young adults.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposures have been associated with adiposity, but the evidence remains inconsistent. We examined associations of several environmental exposures with adiposity in young adulthood, and body mass index (BMI) trajectories from birth to 24 years. METHODS: In the Swedish birth cohort BAMSE, individual-level exposure to air pollutants, road traffic noise, and greenness was estimated using validated models. Time-weighted averages were calculated for early-life (first year) and recent exposure (five years prior to clinical assessment). At age 24, waist circumference and bod

Early metabolic and hepatic alterations in children with Down syndrome: a hidden risk beyond BMI.

OBJECTIVES: Children and adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) are at increased risk of cardiometabolic impairment, but this vulnerability may not be adequately captured by body mass index (BMI) alone. This study aimed to characterize anthropometric, metabolic, and hepatic alterations in pediatric DS beyond conventional BMI-based assessment. METHODS: We included 95 children and adolescents aged 5-18 years: 48 with DS and 47 controls. Anthropometric assessment included weight, height, waist circumference, BMI z-score, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and predicted body composition. Fasting blood sa

Constructing personalised nutrition plans for adolescents using knowledge graphs and dietary profiles.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a crucial period for youth development. However, many teenagers consume diets high in sugar and fat but low in essential nutrients, which can impair growth and increase the risk of obesity and metabolic diseases. This study developed a knowledge graph-based system that generates personalised menus for adolescents by combining structured nutrition data with individual dietary profiles, and evaluated its effects in a school setting. METHODS: An adolescent dietary knowledge graph was built to integrate 339 dishes, 246 ingredients, 30 nutrients and 26 adolescent nutri

Fat and lean mass association with osteoporosis and bone mineral density: the ELSA-Brasil cohort.

CONTEXT: The relationship between body composition, especially fat mass (FM), and bone mineral density (BMD) is still a matter of debate. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test whether FM and lean mass (LM) are predictors of osteoporosis and if the association between body composition and BMD varies by sex, age, and body mass index (BMI) status. METHODS: We analyzed 1316 participants from the ELSA-Brasil Cohort who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Osteoporosis prevalence was stratified by BMI category and sex. Multivariable regression analyses were performed with lean and FM

Metabolic Syndrome and Male Infertility: The Role of Obesity and Chronic Inflammation.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex metabolic disorder that includes central fat accumulation and insulin resistance, abnormal lipid levels, high blood pressure, and ongoing mild inflammation as its main symptoms. The global rise in metabolic syndrome parallels the increasing prevalence of male infertility, suggesting a potential association between metabolic health and reproductive function. Male fertility suffers from obesity, which represents a major element of metabolic syndrome because it disrupts hormonal balance, raises scrotal temperatures, and causes oxidative damage and HPG axis m

Investigating the Role of Area Deprivation Index in Observed Differences in CT-Based Body Composition by Race.

OBJECTIVES: Differences in CT-based body composition (BC) have been observed by race. We sought to investigate whether indices reporting census block group-level disadvantage, Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), age, gender, and clinical factors could explain race-based differences in BC. METHODS: The first abdominal CT examinations for patients in Durham County at a single institution in 2020 were analyzed using a fully automated and open-source deep learning BC analysis workflow to generate cross-sectional areas for skeletal muscle (SMA), subcutaneous fat (SFA
