BACKGROUND: Treatment of displaced tarsal navicular body fractures usually consists of open reduction and internal fixation. However, there is little literature reporting results of this treatment and correlation to fracture severity.
METHODS: We report the results of 24 patients treated in our institution over a 12-year period. Primary outcome measurements were Visual-Analogue-Scale Foot and Ankle score (VAS-FA), AOFAS midfoot score, and talonavicular osteoarthritis at final follow-up. According to a new classification system reflecting talonavicular joint damage, 2-part fractures were class

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are among the most common and challenging fractures due to complex anatomy and variable fracture patterns. While anatomical reduction is critical for successful outcomes, no tool currently predicts the intraoperative difficulty of achieving it. Despite advances in surgical techniques, complications persist. Existing classification systems, such as Codman's, Neer's, AO/OTA, and Mayo-FJD, focus on fracture morphology and displacement but do not address intraoperative complexity. This study aims to develop a new score for the early prediction of intra

PURPOSE: The 30-day mortality rate after hip fracture surgery has been considered as an indirect indicator of the quality of care. The aim of this work is to analyse preoperative and postoperative factors potentially related to early 30-day mortality in patients over 65 undergoing hip fracture surgery.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study including all consecutive primary hip fracture patients over 65 admitted to Trauma and Orthopaedics department from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019. Bed-ridden, non- surgically treated patients, and high energy trauma or tumoral aetiology fractures were ex

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the developmental and functional outcome of condylar fractures in children and adolescents after conservative treatment.
METHODS: Eight children and adolescents with unilateral condylar fracture, aged 5-13 were included. A removable occlusal splint, the thickness of which was determined according to the age, the developmental stage of the dentition, the level of the fracture and the degree of dislocation, worn for 1-3 months, and the patients were asked to perform functional exercises. The patients were followed up by clinical observation, panoramic radiograph, temporom

Monteggia lesion is a traumatic condition that affects the forearm and is characterized by the association of an ulna fracture with a dislocation of the radius capitellar and proximal radius ulnar joints in the majority of cases. Although several authors have contributed to the understanding of this pathology over the years, it remains a challenge for orthopedists, and if not recognized and treated properly, it can have serious consequences. In these cases, a chronic injury develops, which is even more difficult to manage in terms of timing and treatment options. A narrative review of the lite

Giant cell tumor (GCT) or osteoclastoma is a benign, locally aggressive tumor with a tendency to recur. Involvement of the axial skeleton is very rare and majority of them are seen in the sacrum. The authors report a rare case of a 19-year-old female who presented with a C2 dens GCT with a pathological fracture and atlantoaxial dislocation. The patient was operated in two stages: first stage, with posterior instrumentation and stabilization followed by the second stage, tumor resection by anterior transoral approach. The residual tumor cavity was packed with autologous corticocancellous bone g

The present study was undertaken to document outcomes of cementation of a highly cross-linked polyethylene (PE) liner into a well-fixed acetabular metal shell in 36 hips. All operations were performed by a single surgeon using only one type of liner. Patients were followed for a mean of 6.1 years (range, 3-8 years). Mean Harris hip score improved from 58 points preoperatively to 91 points postoperatively. There were no cases of PE liner dislodgement or progressive osteolysis. 1 hip (2.8%) required revision surgery for acetabular cup loosening with greater trochanteric fracture. Complications i

OBJECTIVE: A second and a separate traumatic spinal cord injury, which results in neurological deterioration, is very rare. In this report we describe a patient who became tetraplegic after sustaining a second spinal trauma.
CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old female had a C(7)-T(1) dislocation after a motor vehicle accident. She was neurologically intact and she had undergone a posterior fusion between C(6)-T(2). She made a complete recovery. Eight months after her initial trauma, she sustained a second motor vehicle accident causing a C(5) burst fracture.
CONCLUSION: Second traumatic spinal cord in

Dissecting popliteal cyst is an uncommon complication after total knee arthroplasty, occurring mainly as a result of either rheumatoid arthritis or a malfunctioning knee prosthesis. Its association with a failed metal-backed patellar component has not been reported since the introduction of the resurfacing of the patella with this kind of design in 1980. We present a case of a late fracture-dislocation of the metal part of the patellar component that migrated to the posterior popliteal fossa, resulting in a cystic mass formation caused by a foreign body granuloma. The patient was treated succe

This study describes in modern medical terms a traumatic hip injury suffered by the Biblical patriarch Jacob approximately 3,500 years ago. The case history is based on the original Hebrew text found in the Bible book of Genesis (Chapter 32:25-33) as interpreted by traditional Jewish commentaries on the Bible. Jacob sustained a hip injury in hand-to-hand combat with an adversary or through an intense physiological reaction to a prophetic vision of such a battle. He appears to have sustained neurological injury to his sciatic nerve as well as musculoskeletal damage to his hip. These injuries ca

Instability and recurrent dislocation of the shoulder result from injuries affecting the capsule, ligaments or bones. The positive diagnosis rests on careful clinical investigation where a well-oriented questioning plays an essential role. Paraclinical examinations, such as radiography, ultrasonography, CT and MRI, provide a very accurate assessment of the state of relevant structures. Surgical treatment consists of a stabilizing operation which may be Bankart operation (i.e. suture of the detached capsule onto the anterior part of the glenoid labrum), or a Latarget operation (i.e. screwing of

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) is characterised by sustained or repetitive involuntary movements of the jaw, face, and tongue. People with the condition may present to their dentist, general practitioner, or a secondary care specialist with non-specific symptoms including jaw or facial pain, bruxism, subluxations or dislocations of the jaw; fractured teeth or dental restorations, or both; or jaw tremor. Many clinicians are not aware of the disorder and this can lead to delayed diagnoses, unnecessary complications, and inappropriate treatment. OMD is an important diagnosis not to miss because ref

The patellofemoral (PF) joint is a complex articulation, with interplay between the osseous and soft tissue structures to maintain the balance between knee mobility and stability. Disorders of the PF joint can be a source of anterior knee pain (AKP). In this article, radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging of the PF joint are reviewed, including normal anatomy, imaging techniques, and imaging-based measurements. Common imaging findings associated with AKP are reviewed, including symptomatic normal variants, tendinopathy, apophysitis, osteoarthritis, chondromalacia patella, trochlear dyspla

Artificial ski slope skiing is a popular sport in Great Britain with significant risk of injury. We reviewed 36 patients who had been treated for hand injuries excluding the wrist in our plastic surgery department over a 14-month period after skiing on an artificial ski slope. Specifically, they were 15 fractures of the digits, 3 dislocations of the finger joints, 7 ulnar collateral ligament injuries of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb, and 11 bruises and abrasions. The mean age of the patients was 28 years, and there were 20 men and 16 women. It is concluded that the hardness of the

Injuries of the finger joints with damage to the capsule and ligaments are quite common. Nevertheless early diagnosis may be missed since patients look for relief only after a period of longstanding pain. A careful clinical and X-ray diagnosis is the prerequisite for appropriate treatment. Surgery is still indicated for most of the injuries of the ulnar ligament of the MP-joint of the thumb. Sprains or dislocations of the middle joint of fingers are quite usual. In most instances they may be treated by immobilisation or functional treatment. Persistent subluxation after reduction of the joint

PURPOSE: The resection of the humeral head is normally carried out only with respect to four-part and dislocation fractures in elderly patients. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is a correlation between the clinical results and the MRI findings.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 8 patients underwent clinical and MR examination two to 6 years after resection.
RESULTS: A cartilage-like tissue formation between the remaining humeral head and the glenoid fossa, with signal intensities comparable to hyalin cartilage was found in all patients.
CONCLUSION: The good functional results fol

Blunt trauma to the axillary artery is infrequently associated to unstable proximal humeral fractures or anterior dislocation of the shoulder. We report 3 patients who developed this complication. One of them had associated neurologic injury. All patients required a saphenous vein interposition graft and the patient with neurologic injury required surgical decompression of the brachial plexus. The results of arterial repair were excellent. The patient with neurologic injury recovered significantly after decompression of the plexus, since he had not partial or complete transection of the plexus

The range of injuries sustained at an ice-rink and presented to an Accident Service department is described. A total of 203 patients with 222 injuries presented themselves during a 2-month period. There were 103 noteworthy injuries, including 61 fractures, 2 dislocations and 2 severed tendons, but the commonest injuries were wounds, sprains and bruises. Beginners appear to be more prone to injury than experienced skaters. In addition to using well-fitting skate-boots to protect the ankle, some injuries could be avoided by wearing elbow and knee pads, and a thick pair of gloves. The number of i

Radiological assessment of surgical fusion of fractures and dislocations of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine are an integral part of management of spinal cord injury patients. A meaningful assessment of such fusions can be done properly only when there is adequate knowledge of the types of surgical fusions, the biological material used, and metallic devices applied. Early surgical reduction and internal fixation of the traumatized spine facilitate rapid restoration of spinal alignment, make nursing care less difficult, and sometimes lead toward improvement of neurological function. Seventeen out of eighteen patients, who underwent the modified Bristow operation for anterior recurrent dislocation of the shoulder, were followed up after a mean observation time of 52 months. Fourteen patients were satisfied with the result. There were no redislocations. The principal limitation in range of motion was loss of some external rotation. Eight patients had non-union between the bone transplant and the glenoid rim, and four of these had complications related to the screw. Two had loosenings and two had fractures of the screw. Non-union without screw complications appeared not to i
