The liver develops from progenitor cells into a well-differentiated organ in which bile secretion can be observed by 12 weeks' gestation. Fu … further insights. The possibility that fatty liver (increasingly recognized as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH) may have roots in the neonatal period is a concept which may have important long-term implications.

BACKGROUND: The non invasive diagnosis of amebic liver abscess allows the use of empirical therapy without the requirement of invasive diagnostic procedures.
AIM: To determine the discriminatory capacity of clinical, laboratory and ultrasound studies for the etiological diagnosis of liver abscess.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty one patients were initially included in this prospective study, but 12 did not comply with the inclusion criteria. Of the rest, 29 (59%) had an amebic liver abscess, 16 (33%) had a pyogenic liver abscess and four (8%) had an abscess of mixed etiology. Blood cultures were

Losartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, is widely used for the treatment of hypertension. Clinical experience with this drug has demonstrated that it is safe. Losartan-induced hepatic toxicity is extremely rare. We report a case of severe hepatic toxicity and fibrosis caused by losartan use, and we review four previously reported cases. Drug-induced hepatic injury may be seen during the treatment of hypertension by losartan and the clinician should be aware of this toxicity, especially during the initial phase of treatment.

The clinical presentation of two patients was carried out, with the history of having consumed in their diet watercress, and presented digestive and general symptoms. One of the patients presented hepatomegalia; but both presented jaundice and eosinophilia; CAT scan was suggestive in both cases of the presence of hepatic hematomas, confirmed by laparoscopic study and surgical intervention. The definitive diagnosis of hepatic hematoma by fasciolasis was obtained during the operation and the postoperative study, added to the other important complementary exams in this entity.

The human hereditary hepatic porphyrias are diseases due to marked deficiencies of enzymes in the heme biosynthetic pathway. Porphyrias can be classified as either hepatic or erythroid, depending on the major production site of porphyrins or their precursors. The pathogenesis of inherited hepatic porphyrias has now been defined at the molecular level. Some gene carriers are vulnerable to a range of exogenous and endogenous factors, which may trigger neuropsychiatric and/or cutaneous symptoms. Early diagnosis is of prime importance since it makes way for counselling. In this article we present

The purpose of this study was to analyse the course of pregnancy of a 20-year-old woman suffering from congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF), a genetic disease with recessive autosomic transmission, attributed to the group of hepato-nephro-pancreatic fibropolycystic familial diseases. This was the only time such a case had ever been encountered in a pregnancy in the history of Turin University's Obstetrics and Gynaecological Clinic. The case of a 20-year-old woman is considered. She was admitted to our observation at the Obstetrics and Gynaecological Department of Faculty "B" of the University of

A 9-month-old intact male American cocker spaniel was referred because of hepatomegaly and ascites. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the liver revealed congestion and increased parenchymal echogenicity with focal and more hyperechoic nodules. Histopathology of the hepatic lesion revealed diffuse, ill-defined vascular proliferation. A single layer of endothelial cells, which showed signs of minimal cellular atypia, lined the irregular vessels. On immunohistochemistry, the proliferative endothelial cells lining the irregular vessels were positive for an antiserum to factor VIII related antigen. Ba

Prostaglandins are important mediators of inflammation; they also play a role in the regulation of both lymphocyte and macrophage functions. Hamster's liver lesions resulting from intraportal or intrahepatic inoculation of living Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites are characterized by an acute inflammatory response, where trophozoites are successively surrounded by polymorphonuclear leukocytes, lymphocytes, and macrophages. Incapability of these cells to counteract amebic invasion has been demonstrated in some studies. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) has potent effects on immune cells; its participati

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2001eng
The mechanism underlying the immunological advantage of hepatic allografts relative to other organs is incompletely understood. We used molecular probes for the repetitive units on the Y chromosome, to identify an increasing number of male liver venous endothelial cells in needle biopsy samples of men who received female donor liver grafts. We have also shown repopulation of liver endothelium by bone marrow derived cells in a male to female mouse bone marrow transplant model. We conclude that the liver has unique venous endothelium characterized by turnover and replacement by bone marrow deriv

Weber-Christian disease is an idiopathic disorder characterized by nonsuppurative nodular panniculitis with a lobular distribution of acute inflammation in the subcutaneous fat with occasional systemic involvement. Although the histopathologic features of the liver disease in the syndrome are characterized by steatohepatitis, the clinical features have not been well defined. We report a case of hepatic Weber-Christian disease and discuss the clinical differences from steatohepatitis due to the more common disorders of obesity and diabetes mellitus.

The pathomechanism of neuropathies associated with diabetes and chronic liver diseases are poorly understood. Both metabolic and vascular factors are involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy. It seems likely, that microangiopathy on the one hand and changes of various metabolic pathways due to hyperglycaemia on the other hand are much more related to each other than it was suggested previously. Nitric oxide may be the link between the metabolic and vascular hypotheses of diabetic neuropathy. Both reduced endoneurinal blood flow and increased oxidative stress leads to reduced nitric

A patient presented with a huge, pedunculated abdominal cystic lymphangioma arising from the quadrate lobe of the liver near the round ligament. Microscopically, dilated hepatic ducts with scant liver tissue could be recognized in the main cyst. A review of the literature reveals no previous report of a lymphangioma arising in this manner or from this area.

INTRODUCTION: During nematode infection transit of the microorganism in the lung may be associated with transient infiltration lesions accompanied by marked eosinophilia. In the invasion stage of the disease maturation and sexual differentiation of schistosomules is restricted to portal vessels. Liver ultrasonography may show concomitant abnormalities.
EXEGESIS: Eosinophilia was diagnosed in a 36-year-old man residing in Central Africa. Clinical examination, chest X-ray and biology were normal. Liver ultrasonography showed numerous hypoechoic lesions, up to 3 cm in diameter. Ultrasonography-d

Angiomyolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumours, mostly of renal origin. Hepatic angiomyolipomas are rare, and radiological and pathological diagnoses may be difficult We report on the first case of hepatic angiomyolipoma recurrence known to us, 6 years after surgical treatment of the initial tumour. Moreover, this hepatic recurrence was associated with renal angiomyolipoma without any stigmata of tuberous sclerosis.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a syndrome of global cerebral dysfunction resulting from underlying liver disease or portal-systemic shunting. HE can present as one of four syndromes, depending on the rapidity of onset of hepatic failure and the presence or absence of preexisting liver disease. The precise pathogenesis is unknown but likely involves impaired hepatic detoxification of ammonia as well as alterations in brain transport and metabolism of amino acids and amines. The etiology of malnutrition in hepatic failure is multifactorial. Nutritional deficits may be clinically manifest as mara

Porphyrias are inherited defects of heme synthesis with manifestations that can mimic surgical diseases; they can be provoked by administration of certain drugs. Manifestations such as abdominal pain, vomiting, tachycardia, hypertension, neuropathy, fever, confusion, and seizures have been described. Management of patients with porphyria is designed to avoid triggering drugs, such as barbiturates, and perhaps, benzodiazepines and ketamines. Nontriggering drugs should be used in the management of patients with porphyria. Because starvation can induce an attack, glucose infusions are important i
