Individualized white matter connectivity of the articulatory pathway: An ultra-high field study.

In current sensorimotor theories pertaining to speech perception, there is a notable emphasis on the involvement of the articulatory-motor system in the processing of speech sounds. Using ultra-high field diffusion-weighted imaging at 7 Tesla, we visualized the white matter tracts connected to areas activated during a simple speech-sound production task in 18 healthy right-handed adults. Regions of interest for white matter tractography were individually determined through 7T functional MRI (fMRI) analyses, based on activations during silent vocalization tasks. These precentral seed regions, a

Progressive increase of brain gray matter volume in individuals with regular soccer training.

The study aimed to investigate alterations in gray matter volume in individuals undergoing regular soccer training, using high-resolution structural data, while also examining the temporal precedence of such structural alterations. Both voxel-based morphometry and source-based morphometry (SBM) methods were employed to analyze volumetric changes in gray matter between the soccer and control groups. Additionally, a causal network of structural covariance (CaSCN) was built using granger causality analysis on brain structural data ordering by training duration. Significant increases in gray matte

Individualized positive end-expiratory pressure in laparoscopic surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The reduction in functional residual capacity (FRC) is a significant pathological factor in the development of postoperative pulmonary complications. Appropriate positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is critical to preserve FRC during mechanical ventilation. Our previous study suggests that using driving pressure-guided PEEP can reduce postoperative pulmonary complications. In this study, we hypothesize that individualized PEEP can increase immediate postoperative FRC and improve lung ventilation. METHODS: This single-centered, randomized controlled trial included a total of 91

The Effect of Simulated Obstructive Apneas on Mechanical Characteristics of Lower Airways in Individuals with Asthma.

Increased negative intrathoracic pressure that occurs during pharyngeal obstruction can increase thoracic fluid volume that may contribute to lower airway narrowing in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and asthma. Our previous study showed that fluid accumulation in the thorax induced by simulated OSA can increase total respiratory resistance. However, the effect of fluid shift on lower airway narrowing has not been investigated. To examine the effect of fluid accumulation in the thorax on the resistance of the lower airway. Non-asthma participants and individuals with (un)control

Correlated excitonic signatures of individual van der Waals NiPS3 antiferromagnet nanoflakes.

Composite quasi-particles with emergent functionalities in spintronic and quantum information science can be realized in correlated materials due to entangled charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here we show that by reducing the lateral dimension of correlated antiferromagnet NiPS3 flakes to tens of nanometers and thickness to less than ten nanometers, we can switch-off the bulk spin-orbit entangled exciton in the near-infrared (1.47 eV) and activate visible-range (1.8-2.2 eV) transitions. These ultra-sharp lines (<120 μeV at 4.2 K) share the spin-correlated nature of the bu

Unveiling the neuroplastic capacity of the bilingual brain: insights from healthy and pathological individuals.

Research on the neural imprint of dual-language experience, crucial for understanding how the brain processes dominant and non-dominant languages, remains inconclusive. Conflicting evidence suggests either similarity or distinction in neural processing, with implications for bilingual patients with brain tumors. Preserving dual-language functions after surgery requires considering pre-diagnosis neuroplastic changes. Here, we combine univariate and multivariate fMRI methodologies to test a group of healthy Spanish-Basque bilinguals and a group of bilingual patients with gliomas affecting the la

Experience of individuals with lung and gastrointestinal cancers undergoing radiation therapy: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer remains one of the most diagnosed cancers in Canada and continues to be the leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada, responsible for 25% of all cancer deaths. Prior studies consistently report poor experiences of people with lung cancers. The study purpose was to explore the reasons for consistently poorer reported experience of people with lung cancer compared to people with gastrointestinal cancers, who previously have reported positive cancer care experiences within the same context, and to better understand key differences that influence patient experience. METHODS:

A comprehensive transcriptome characterization of individual nuclear receptor pathways in the human small intestine.

Nuclear receptors (NRs) are widely expressed transcription factors that bind small, lipophilic compounds and regulate diverse biological processes. In the small intestine, NRs are known to act as sensors that control transcriptional responses to endogenous and exogenous signals, yet their downstream effects have not been characterized extensively. Here, we investigate the activation of six different NRs individually in human intestinal organoids using small molecules agonists. We observe changes in key enterocyte functions such as lipid, glucose, and amino acid absorption, the regulation of el

Influence of leptin and its receptors on individuals under chronic social stress behavior.

Stress is the body's physiological reaction to a dangerous or threatening situation, leading to a state of alertness. This reaction is necessary for developing an effective adaptive response to stress and maintaining the body's homeostasis. Chronic stress, caused mainly by social stress, is what primarily affects the world's population. In the last decades, the emergence of psychological disorders in humans has become more frequent, and one of the symptoms that can be observed is aggressiveness. In the brain, stress can cause neuronal circuit alterations related to the action of hormones in th

Mood symptoms and gut function across the menstrual cycle in individuals with premenstrual syndrome.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as bloating, constipation, and nausea are common in the days before menstruation, experienced by as many as 73 % of menstruating individuals. Mood may influence the link between menstrual cycle and GI symptoms, with prior studies indicating that even among healthy controls, GI symptoms worsen premenstrually and are associated with worsening mood. Associations between GI symptoms and mood are poorly understood among those with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), a cluster of mood and/or physical symptoms that occur in the week before menses affecting roughly 20 % of

Human intraparietal sulcal morphology relates to individual differences in language and memory performance.

The sulco-gyral pattern is a qualitative feature of the cortical anatomy that is determined in utero, stable throughout lifespan and linked to brain function. The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) is a nodal associative brain area, but the relation between its morphology and cognition is largely unknown. By labelling the left and right IPS of 390 healthy participants into two patterns, according to the presence or absence of a sulcus interruption, here we demonstrate a strong association between the morphology of the right IPS and performance on memory and language tasks. We interpret the results as
