Endolymphatic hydrops can be visualized with high contrast-to-noise ratio even after intravenous injection of single-dose gadolinium-based contrast material (IV-SD-GBCM) using HYDROPS-Mi2 images. We applied 3-dimensional rendering software to process HYDROPS-Mi2 images of 15 ears with and without suspected Ménière's disease and separately visualized the volumes of endo- and perilymph in patients with Ménière's disease even after IV-SD-GBCM. Such dimensional visualization will aid understanding of the pathophysiology of Ménière's disease.

We report on a patient with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency who developed acute hemolytic anemia after having received an injection of Ginkgo biloba for dementia prophylaxis without medical advice. She suddenly developed general malaise, generalized yellowish skin color, and tea-colored urine. Intravenous fluid infusion and cessation of G. biloba quickly relieved her clinical symptoms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of G. biloba-induced acute hemolytic anemia in vivo.

Although patients of cerebral sinus thrombosis after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) has been previously reported; reports of cerebral venous thrombosis secondary to subcutaneous injection of immunoglobulin (SIG) in conjunction with oral contraceptives are nonexistent in the current literature. We describe here a patient of cerebral venous and sinus thrombosis occurring after the combination of SIG and oral contraceptive use. Furthermore, we shall explore proper clinical precautions for someone who receives IG therapy, especially in conjunction with the use of oral contraceptives.

Absence of the right superior vena cava (SVC) is a rare event occurring in patients without congenital cardiovascular abnormalities. Since absence of the right SVC is usually clinically silent, its diagnosis is mandatory prior to invasive medical or surgical procedures. We report two cases of echocardiographic diagnosis of absence of the right SVC with persistent left SVC and a large coronary sinus in structurally normal heart in a fetus of 20 weeks' gestation and in a newborn. A 60-year-old man presented with recurrent genital and oral ulcers, necrotic papules on his face and scalp, spiking fever and indurated skin erythema on the trunk. A diagnosis of chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection and IgG3 subclass deficiency was made, and he was supplemented by intravenous gammaglobulin injection. The spiking fever was resistant to treatment, but the addition of systemic interferon-alpha therapy was partially effective in treating his clinical symptoms, although the patient eventually died from pulmonary effusions and cardiac insufficiency.

Two new GABA derivatives, 1 and 2, were synthesized and tested for their capacity to display CNS activity, which was assessed by determining the effects on the duration of pentobarbital-induced hypnosis in rats. Compound 1, peripherally injected, significantly prolonged the hypnosis time, a typical GABA-mimetic effect, while both intracerebroventricular and intravenous administration of compound 2 surprisingly shortened the hypnotic effect in an atropine-sensitive way. The study was extended also to compounds 1a, 1b and 2a, putative oxidative/hydrolytic metabolites of 1 and 2.

A previously unreported subset of high-pressure injection injuries, namely those involving solvents used in the garment dry cleaning industry, is presented. Dry cleaning solutions contain isoparaffinic hydrocarbons, methoxypropanol, and dichlorofluoroethane. Although these solvents have limited potential for systemic toxicity, severe local toxicity causing tissue necrosis often results in loss of the injured digit. Proper treatment includes prompt surgical exploration, careful débridement and irrigation, intravenous antibiotics, and in selected cases, high-dose systemic corticosteroids.

13 cases of hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma are reviewed with respect to the visibility of the tumour margin, hepatic veins, and portal veins on non-contrast, non-dynamic and dynamic computerised scans. The possibility of obtaining a rapid fall of kalaemia in patients with renal failure under haemodialysis by injecting salbutamol intravenously in doses of 0.5 mg over 15 minutes was tested in 11 subjects. Kalaemia fell by 1.08 +/- 0.30 mmol in 30 minutes, 75 per cent of the effect being obtained at the end of the infusion. Malaise with tachycardia was frequent but always transient. Thus, a rapid infusion of salbutamol seems to be well tolerated and effective against hyperkalaemia, provided two contra-indications are observed: coronary disease and treatment with beta-blockers.

Basal gonadotrophin and sex steroid levels and responses to an intravenous injection of 100 mug gonadotrophin releasing hormone (Gn-RH) have been studied in 15 patients with polycystic ovaries. Mean basal LH concentration was raised and an excessive, exaggerated and prolonged response was observed after Gn-RH treatment, but patients could further be subdivided into two functional groups on the basis of their basal LH values and LH response patterns. Evidence was also produced which suggested a breakdown in the negative feedback mechanism in these patients.

To treat patients with chronic arterial occlusion of the lower extremities, the authors used 3% solution of low molecular polyvinyl alcohol in 0.9% sodium chloride solution-polydese.
