Texture and Neonicotinoid Exposure Shape Bacterial Assemblages and Functions in Agricultural Soils: Responses Over Prolonged Exposure.

The physical and chemical properties of soil fundamentally shape its microbial communities. In a controlled 28-day microcosm experiment, we assessed bacterial community responses to imidacloprid in three soils with differing textures and classifications: a loamy sand (11 g/100 g clay; red Luvisol), a sandy loam (16 g/100 g clay; red Luvisol) and a clay soil (56 g/100 g clay, Vertisol). Analyses included 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, indicator species analysis, co-occurrence network analysis and PICRUSt2-based functional prediction. Imidacloprid exposure elicited soil-specific shifts in ba

Low-lethal and intergenerational effects of broflanilide on the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.).

The diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) is an important agricultural pest worldwide that causes substantial damage to cruciferous crops. Broflanilide is a novel insecticide with high activity against DBM. This study demonstrated that exposure of DBM larvae to low concentrations (LC5, LC10, and LC30) of broflanilide significantly affected their development and fecundity. These treatments prolonged larval and pupal durations by 13.77% - 23.34% (14.95 h - 25.34 h) and 16.15% - 19.06% (13.46 h - 15.89 h), respectively, and reduced fecundity by 10.59% - 17.10%. The juvenile hormone (JH

Comparative toxicity of thiamethoxam and abamectin in red swamp crayfish: Bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota in a rice-crayfish Co-culture system.

The expansion of integrated agriculture-aquaculture systems, while economically beneficial, introduces complex environmental challenges, particularly concerning pesticide runoff and its impact on non-target aquatic species. The rice-crayfish co-culture system, a prevalent agricultural model in China, exemplifies this dichotomy, where crop protection practices may inadvertently compromise the health of co-cultured organisms. Here this study investigate the ecotoxicological effects of two widely used pesticides-thiamethoxam (TMX), a neonicotinoid insecticide, and abamectin (ABM), a macrocyclic l

Fusion protein based strategies for developing insect-resistant crops.

Insect pest control in crop production incurs substantial economic costs annually on a global scale. Although broad-spectrum chemical pesticides were once considered the most effective solution, their overreliance has led to adverse effects on beneficial insects, human health, and the environment, as well as the development of pesticide-resistant insect populations. Consequently, there is an urgent need for alternative pest management strategies that minimize pesticide use and reduce unintended impacts on natural enemies, thereby maintaining ecological balance. Host plant resistance plays a pi

Exposure to Chlorpyrifos Influences Epididymal Development in Pubescent Rats.

The epididymis is responsible for sperm maturation, but is sensitive to the action of external agents, especially during the peripubertal period. Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate class pesticide to which humans are constantly exposed. Currently, there are few studies that evaluate the effects of this insecticide on the epididymis; therefore, the objective of the present study was to assess the effects of chlorpyrifos on the postnatal development of the epididymis during the peripubertal period. Thirty Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Control, C5, and C15. The control group receive

Treatment of chorioptic mange in dairy cows contributes to improved animal welfare.

The present study investigated the impact of antiparasitic treatment for Chorioptes spp. infection on the behaviour and stress of lactating cows. Although chorioptic mange is common, its effects on cow welfare through behavioural and physiological indicators remain unclear. The effects of topical eprinomectin for chorioptic mange on behaviour and salivary cortisol concentrations, indicators of cow welfare, were examined. In Study 1, total lying time after treatment, a key indicator of improved comfort in cows, showed a significant increase of 35 min. In Study 2, itching behaviour (P < 0.05) an

Integrated In Silico, In Vivo, and Deep Learning Approaches in the Discovery of Novel Candidate Molecules for Aedes aegypti Control.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is a primary vector responsible for transmitting major arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Increasing resistance to conventional synthetic insecticides, combined with their well-known environmental drawbacks, underscores the urgent need for more selective, sustainable, and effective strategies for vector control. Chalcones have been previously identified by our research group as a promising chemical class of larvicidal agents, with preliminary evidence for distinct mechanisms of action. More recently, an additional strategy for integra…

Bacterially expressed recombinant TMOF induces mortality and gut microbial alterations in Aedes albopictus larvae.

Mosquitoes, as vectors of numerous diseases, pose significant threat to human health. Aedes mosquitoes transmit diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya, with dengue fever alone responsible for approximately 40,000 deaths and more than 96 million symptomatic cases annually. Current mosquito control methods are inadequate and results in environmental health hazards and development of resistance. Therefore, targeted control strategies are essential. In this context, we cloned and expressed the Trypsin Modulating Oostatic Factor (TMOF), a decapeptide that inhibits trypsin biosynthesi

Can Ahiflower® (Buglossoides arvensis) seed-oil supplementation help overcome the adverse effects of imidacloprid in honey bees?

In this study, we investigated the effects of nutritional supplementation as a strategy to mitigate the impacts of imidacloprid (neonicotinoid) on honey bees by using Ahiflower® (Buglossoides arvensis) seed-oil. This oil is rich in stearidonic-acid (SDA, 18:4n3), which is a precursor to eicosapentaenoic-acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic-acid (DHA) that are known for their beneficial and protective effects. Specifically, we chronically fed newly emerged worker bees with sucrose syrup and pollen patties (control) that we supplemented with (i) imidacloprid (0.375 ng·μl-1), (ii) Ahiflower® oil (5 %)

Integrated network toxicology and molecular docking are used to elucidate the mechanism by which chlorpyrifos induces hepatotoxicity (Cyprinus carpio).

Chlorpyrifos (CPF), a typical organophosphorus pesticide, is frequently applied for pest control in households and agriculture worldwide. Liver, being the primary site for xenobiotic metabolism, is extremely vulnerable to drug threats. To elucidate the hepatotoxic mechanism of CPF and identify targets for its relief, the overlapping data between CPF-associated targets and liver injury-related genes were analyzed. It was found that CPF hepatotoxicity targets were mainly involved in oxidoreductase activity, fatty acid metabolism, glutathione metabolic process, response to biotic stimulus, ferrop
