The Odyssean personality. A survival advantage for carriers of genes predisposing to schizophrenia?

To explain the persistence of schizophrenia in human populations at relatively high and constant rates, it is proposed that the schizoid-paranoid personality (designated as the Odyssean personality) which characterizes so many nonpsychotic relatives of schizophrenics, represents a selective advantage. It is assumed that odyssean relatives carry the gene or genes predisposing to schizophrenia, but not in sufficient quantity for the development of the psychosis. It is suggested that because of their schizoid-paranoid out-look, Odysseans have an increased probability of contributing to the gene p

Exploring sexuality, sexual well-being and intimacy in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

INTRODUCTION: Sexuality and intimacy are central dimensions of identity, emotional well-being, social connectedness, and quality of life. In individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs), these domains may be profoundly affected by illness-related, psychological, interpersonal, social, institutional, and treatment-related factors. Although antipsychotic-induced sexual dysfunction is clinically relevant, a broader understanding of patients' subjective experiences is needed to capture the meaning of sexuality, intimacy, and relational well-being in this population. METHODS: A systema

Diabetes-related distress among type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that diabetes negatively affects mental health, and that depression is twice as common among individuals with diabetes. AIM: To evaluate diabetes-related distress and its association with complications, treatment adherence and clinical outcomes in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected data from 269 patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus at a tertiary hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, using the Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS). The data were analysed using SPSS version 25. RESULTS: Overall, 12.3% of the participants reported diabet

My playbook: Psychotherapy role expectations, relational trauma, and trauma-spectrum mental dysfunctions in community mental health service users in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVE: Clients with relational trauma often face challenges in forming a therapeutic alliance, a primary predictor of psychotherapy outcomes. Unresolved traumatic stress can lead to a passive stance in therapy, manifested as a tendency to seek advice and approval from therapists in order to establish more predictable relational dynamics. This comes at the cost of adequately addressing their own therapeutic needs, which often leads to stagnation, treatment dropout, and frustration with the therapist. We postulated that neither relational nor nonrelational traumas could fully account for pas

The expectancies of living kidney donors: do they differ as a function of relational status and gender?

BACKGROUND: While two-thirds of the living kidney donors continue to be genetically related to the recipient, there has been a 300% increase in unrelated living donors over the last 10 years. Also, women continue to represent more than half of all the living kidney donors. This study examined whether donor expectancies varied as a function of relational status or gender. METHODS: 362 kidney donor candidates (232 related, 130 unrelated) completed the Living Donation Expectancies Questionnaire (LDEQ). A 2 (relational status: related or unrelated) x 2 (gender: male or female) multivariate analys

Association between interpersonal behaviour and helping alliance in substance-dependent patients.

This paper focuses on exploring the association between the patient's perception of his own interpersonal behaviour on the one hand, and that of the therapist's behaviour and of helping alliance on the other hand. A cross-sectional study was conducted, including 83 patients from substance dependence programs in The Netherlands. They completed the Helping Alliance Questionnaire (HAQ) and the Interpersonal Check List (ICL). Results indicate that the patient's perception of the therapeutic alliance, and his perception of his own and of the therapist's interpersonal behaviour are three separate do

Heavy drinking, alcohol-dependent vs. nondependent methadone-maintenance clients: a follow-up study.

This study of methadone-maintenance clients interviewed approximately 1 year after discharge from treatment revealed that outcomes differed between heavy-drinking clients who are alcohol dependent and those who are not. Alcohol-dependent clients seem to benefit more from treatment but continue to have severe cocaine-use problems, suggesting they also may be cocaine dependent. The results emphasized the value in differentiating between these types of drinking clients, and they suggest that failure to do so may account for earlier contradictory results about the role alcohol consumption has in t

War-Related Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms During the First Two Postpartum Years: The Moderating Role of Childhood Adversity.

Early motherhood is a sensitive period marked by increased psychological vulnerability, potentially impacting child developmental trajectories. While childhood adversity and war-related trauma are known as risk factors for psychopathology, little is known about their combined impact on posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) during the first 2 years of motherhood. Grounded in stress sensitisation, this two-wave study examined how childhood adverse experiences (ACEs) and childhood war-related insecurity moderate the prospective association between contemporary cumulative war exposure and maternal

Social Achievement Goals and Alcohol Use Outcomes in a Network of College Students.

BACKGROUND: Social achievement goals are individuals' orientations toward attaining competence in social situations. Social achievement goals have been linked to outcomes such as belongingness, loneliness, and bullying perpetration among college students. Given that college students consume alcohol for social reasons, it is possible that a person's orientation toward social competence could be related to their drinking. This research examined whether the dimensions of social achievement goal orientations predict alcohol-related outcomes. METHODS: Students (N = 1083; 57% female; Mage = 20.6 ye

Mental health in South African adolescents living with HIV: correlates of internalising and externalising symptoms.

Although declining in all other age groups, AIDS-related deaths among adolescents are increasing. In the context of HIV, mental health problems are associated with negative health outcomes, including non-adherence to life-saving ART. For effective programming it is essential to identify factors associated with psychological outcomes in this population. Adopting a socioecological perspective, we aimed to identify correlates of internalising and externalising symptoms in a large, representative sample of South African adolescents living with HIV. HIV-positive adolescents (n = 1060), who received

Methamphetamine-using parents: the relationship between parental role strain and depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The methamphetamine epidemic in the United States involves a large number of men and women with dependent-age children. However, we know little about the parenting strains experienced by methamphetamine-using mothers and fathers and the relationship of these parenting strains to mental health outcomes, specifically depressive symptoms. METHOD: The primary goal of this study was to examine five dimensions of parental role strain in relation to depressive symptoms in a sample of 180 methamphetamine-using parents of dependent-age children in San Diego, CA. Dimensions of parental role

Wishes to die at the end of life and subjective experience of four different typical dying trajectories. A qualitative interview study.

RESEARCH AIMS: The motivations that lead to wishes to die (WTD) in palliative care patients with cancer are relatively well studied. But little is known about WTD in other pathologies and the relation between subjective understandings of dying trajectories and a WTD. We investigated the WTD of palliative patients in four different dying trajectories: neurological diseases, organ failure, frailty due to age, and cancer. STUDY POPULATION: 62 palliative cancer (n = 30) and non-cancer (n = 32) patients (10 neurological disease; 11 organ failure; 11 frailty), their families and health professional

An Event-Level Analysis of the Interpersonal Factors Associated With Condomless Anal Sex Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men (MSM) With Online-Met Partners.

The interpersonal determinants of condomless anal sex (CAS) within online-initiated sexual relationships remain poorly understood. Therefore, respondent-driven sampling was used to recruit a prospective cohort of sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), aged ≥ 16 years in Vancouver, Canada. Follow-up occurred every 6 months, up to seven visits; at each visit participants reported their last sexual encounter with their five most recent partners. Stratified by self-reported HIV status, individual-level, interpersonal, and situational covariates of event-level CAS

Evaluation of an evidence-based intervention implemented with African-American women to prevent substance abuse, strengthen relationship skills and reduce risk for HIV/AIDS.

African-American females in the U.S. are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, and a large majority of new infections in this population are attributed to heterosexual contact. Risk factors include substance abuse, lack of knowledge about male partners' possible HIV infection risk, incarceration, disruptions of social networks, and intimate partner violence. This study assessed the effects of a comprehensive, evidence-based prevention intervention, Creating Lasting Family Connections (CLFC) that was implemented with sensitivity to African-American females, using a quasi-experimental design.

Structural Determinants of Client Perpetrated Violence Among Female Sex Workers in Two Mexico-U.S. Border Cities.

Female sex workers (FSWs) are disproportionately affected by both HIV and gender-based violence, such as that perpetrated by clients (CPV). We used a structural determinants framework to assess correlates of physical or sexual CPV in the past 6 months among FSWs in the Mexico/U.S. border cities of Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis identified individual, client, interpersonal, work environment and macrostructural factors associated with recent CPV. Among 496 FSWs, 5 % experienced recent CPV. Witnessing violence towards other FSWs in one's neighbo

Dating Violence Victimization, Interpersonal Needs, and Suicidal Ideation Among College Students.

BACKGROUND: Victims of dating violence experience suicidal ideation at a higher rate than the general population. However, very few studies have examined the relationship between dating violence and suicidal ideation within an empirically supported theory of suicide. The interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide posits that thwarted interpersonal needs (i.e., thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness) are proximal antecedents to suicidal ideation. The experience of dating violence may thwart such interpersonal needs, thus increasing risk for suicidal ideation. AIMS: We aimed to

The effects of sexual partnership and relationship characteristics on three sexual risk variables in young men who have sex with men.

Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in the United States are experiencing an alarming increase in HIV incidence. Recent evidence suggests that the majority of new HIV infections in YMSM occur in the context of serious relationships, which underscores the importance of examining predictors of sexual risk behavior in the context of sexual partnerships, including relationship type, sexual partner characteristics, and relationship dynamics. The current study aimed to evaluate relationship and sexual partnership influences on sexual risk behavior in YMSM, including differentiating between multip

Client perspectives on design and implementation of a couples-based intervention to reduce sexual and drug risk behaviors among female sex workers and their noncommercial partners in Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez, México.

This mixed-methods study examined the acceptability of a hypothetical couples-based HIV prevention program for female sex workers and their intimate (non-commercial) male partners in Mexico. Among 320 participants, 67 % preferred couples-based over individual programs, particularly among men. Reasons cited for preferring couples-based programs included convenience and health benefits for both partners. Participants reported that they would benefit from general health information and services, HIV counseling and testing, job training (particularly for men) and other services. However, qualitati
