Open-angle glaucoma is a common cause of blindness and visual impairment, and is characterized by elevated intraocular pressure, optic nerve degeneration and visual field loss. Data from the Glasgow Register of Congenital Malformations were used to investigate the extent of the recent decline in the prevalence of anencephaly and spina bifida, and the contribution of antenatal screening to it. An investigation of the reliability of screening tests for beta thalassaemia trait in pregnant women was carried out as part of a programme to predict beta thalassaemia major in the fetus. State regulations for neonatal screening for metabolic diseases do not optimally serve the needs of the dependents of the U.S. Armed Forces. Guidelines are therefore proposed for the neonatal screening for metabolic disease based both on responses received across the United States and on the unique needs of the U.S. Armed Forces. On the basis of a blanket examination of employees at a large industrial enterprise which revealed 743 patients with neuropsychic diseases, predominantly of a borderline nature, and of 273 mentally normal subjects the authors, using the algorithm of image recognition identified an informative aggregation of factors determining the status of mental health. Four technics were compared to find the most suitable screening test for the cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody status in blood donors. One hundred thirty-five donor samples were tested by two enzyme immunoassays, EIA(Litton) and EIA(Abbott), and by latex agglutination (LA) and complement fixation (CF). The seroreactivity of the tests were judged by concordance of three or more methods. The authors found that the test performance of the EIA(Litton) could be improved with adjustment of sample color variation, which increased the test sensitivity and specificity from 48.8% and 87.2% to 83.8% and 96.

The experience of running a specialized photoroentgenographic station of the Institute is discussed. The total of 4,052 examinations (healthy subjects for prophylaxis and patients with gastrointestinal complaints) were carried out. The percentage of early gastric cancer diagnosed by means of prophylactic photoroentgenography was significantly higher than that yielded by standard out-patient examination procedures. Such centers should be set up primarily at large polyclinics, regional hospitals, etc.

TR/Patoc slide test, ELISA and TIA (Thin-Layer Immunoassay) were evaluated for their use in a rapid serodiagnosis of human leptospirosis. The results obtained indicated that the TR/Patoc slide test is very sensitive and able to detect within a few minutes early antibodies against whichever serovar of leptospires, like the antigens of the Galton test.
