Wearable Devices Detect Physiological Changes that Precede and Are Associated with Symptomatic and Inflammatory Rheumatoid Arthritis Flares.

Physiological parameters are altered in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We evaluated whether changes in physiological metrics, collected from wearable devices, identify and precede the development of both symptomatic and inflammatory RA flares. Participants with RA answered daily disease activity surveys and provided laboratory assessments of inflammatory activity. They wore an Apple Watch (n=35), Fitbit (n=17), or Oura Ring (n=3) collecting heart rate (HR), resting heart rate (RHR), heart rate variability (HRV), and steps. Linear mixed effect models were used to associate HR, RHR and steps with fl

Panic Attack Prediction for Patients With Panic Disorder via Machine Learning and Wearable Electrocardiography Monitoring: Model Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Panic attack prediction remains a critical challenge in mental health care due to the high interindividual variability of physiological responses and the limitations of subjective psychological assessments. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a multimodal deep learning framework that integrates real-time physiological signals from wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors and psychological assessments to improve the accuracy of panic attack prediction. METHODS: We adapted the ConvNetQuake architecture, originally designed for seismic detection, to extract temporal patterns from

Examining the audiovisual therapy effects on hospital groups of varying linear canopy landscapes and those with hydrodynamic forces.

Recent research has highlighted the beneficial effects of urban green spaces on physical and mental health. This study focused on the hospital population and innovatively subdivided the population into four groups: doctors, caregivers, patients and nurses. A total of 96 volunteers participated in this virtual reality experiment to assess the restoration of a linear canopy landscape and a landscape with different levels of hydrodynamics through interactive audiovisual immersion. We utilized pre-research method, brainwave monitoring technique, psychological scales, observation and interviews in

Automated mood disorder symptoms monitoring from multivariate time-series sensory data: getting the full picture beyond a single number.

Mood disorders (MDs) are among the leading causes of disease burden worldwide. Limited specialized care availability remains a major bottleneck thus hindering pre-emptive interventions. MDs manifest with changes in mood, sleep, and motor activity, observable in ecological physiological recordings thanks to recent advances in wearable technology. Therefore, near-continuous and passive collection of physiological data from wearables in daily life, analyzable with machine learning (ML), could mitigate this problem, bringing MDs monitoring outside the clinician's office. Previous works predict a s

Comparative assessment of coronary physiology using transthoracic pulsed-wave Doppler and myocardial contrast echocardiography in rats.

BACKGROUND: Coronary physiology assessment in rodents by ultrasound is an excellent noninvasive and easy to perform technique, including pulsed-wave Doppler (PWD) and myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE). Both techniques and the corresponding calculated parameters were investigated in this study at rest as well as their response to pharmacologically induced stress. METHODS: Left ventricular myocardial function was assessed in eight anaesthetised rats using transthoracic echocardiography. Coronary physiology was assessed by both PWD of the left coronary artery and MCE using a bolus metho

Monitoring adaptation of skin tissue oxygenation during cycling ergometer exercise by frequency-domain diffuse optical spectroscopy.

In addition to supplying oxygen molecule O2 for metabolic functions during the adaptation to exercise, blood also plays a critical role in heat dissipation for core temperature stabilization. This study investigates the status of hemodynamic oxygenation in the forearm's skin tissue of three participants during a complete ergometer exercise from the resting to exercising, and to recovering conditions using a three-wavelength frequency-domain diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (FD DRS) alongside the monitoring of heartbeat rate and skin temperature. The FD DRS system was synchronized with radiofre

B-waves are present in patients without intracranial pressure disturbances.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) B-waves are defined as short, repeating elevations of ICP of up to 50 mmHg with a frequency of 0.5-2 waves/min. The presence of B-waves in overnight recordings is regarded as a pathological phenomenon. However, the physiology of B-waves is still not fully understood and studies with transcranial Doppler, as a surrogate marker for ICP, have suggested that B-waves could be a normal physiological phenomenon. We present four patients without known structural neurological disease other than a coincidentally found unruptured intracranial aneurysm. One of the patients had

tDCS to the left DLPFC modulates cognitive and physiological correlates of executive function in a state-dependent manner.

BACKGROUND: The use of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) to study anatomical and physiological dynamics and circuits supporting cognition and executive functions in particular has dramatically increased in recent years. However, its mechanisms of action remain only partially understood. OBJECTIVE: In this study we assess the cognitive and physiological effects of anodal tDCS to the DLPFC on executive function in order to understand (1) the role of DLPFC laterality, (2) the physiological dynamics sustaining the modulation of executive function by tDCS, and (3) the impact of state-

Development of vernal migration in redheaded buntings: concurrent behavioral, physiological and neural changes under stimulatory photoperiods.

We investigated changes in behavior, physiology and selected brain regions during the development of vernal migration and reproduction phenotypes in migratory redheaded buntings. We monitored 24 h activity-rest pattern and measured food intake, fat deposition, and body mass of buntings exposed for 12 weeks to short (SP, 8L : 16D) and long (LP, 13L : 11D) photoperiods at 22 ± 2 °C temperature. Under LP, not SP, buntings exhibited a photostimulated spring migration phenotype (hyperphagia, fat deposition and body mass gain). However, there were sex differences in the development of vernal migrati

An innovative design for cardiopulmonary resuscitation manikins based on a human-like thorax and embedded flow sensors.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation manikins are used for training personnel in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. State-of-the-art cardiopulmonary resuscitation manikins are still anatomically and physiologically low-fidelity designs. The aim of this research was to design a manikin that offers high anatomical and physiological fidelity and has a cardiac and respiratory system along with integrated flow sensors to monitor cardiac output and air displacement in response to cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This manikin was designed in accordance with anatomical dimensions using a polyoxymethylen

College females with maltreatment histories have atypical autonomic regulation and poor psychological wellbeing.

OBJECTIVES: This study uniquely examined the impact of maltreatment (without a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) on physiological responses to a physical and an emotional stressor. The study sample was composed exclusively of women, because men may differ in maltreatment experience and neural regulation of physiological reactivity. METHOD: Participants were 60 female college students. A significant proportion of the participants reported experiencing childhood maltreatment without a history of PTSD. Participants completed measures assessing psychological and PTSD symptomatolo

Quantitative computed tomography imaging of interstitial lung diseases.

PURPOSE: High-resolution chest computed tomography (HRCT) is essential in the characterization of interstitial lung disease. The HRCT features of some diseases can be diagnostic. Longitudinal monitoring with HRCT can assess progression of interstitial lung disease; however, subtle changes in the volume and character of abnormalities can be difficult to assess. Accuracy of diagnosis can be dependent on expertise and experience of the radiologist, pathologist, or clinician. Quantitative analysis of thoracic HRCT has the potential to determine the extent of disease reproducibly, classify the type

Cognitive and physiological responses in humans exposed to a TETRA base station signal in relation to perceived electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) technology ("Airwave") has led to public concern because of its potential interference with electrical activity in the brain. The present study is the first to examine whether acute exposure to a TETRA base station signal has an impact on cognitive functioning and physiological responses. Participants were exposed to a 420 MHz TETRA signal at a power flux density of 10 mW/m(2) as well as sham (no signal) under double-blind conditions. Fifty-one people who reported a perceived sensitivity to electromagnetic fields as well as 132 controls participated in a doubl

Physiological responses to rock climbing in young climbers.

Key questions regarding the training and physiological qualities required to produce an elite rock climber remain inadequately defined. Little research has been done on young climbers. The aim of this paper was to review literature on climbing alongside relevant literature characterising physiological adaptations in young athletes. Evidence-based recommendations were sought to inform the training of young climbers. Of 200 studies on climbing, 50 were selected as being appropriate to this review, and were interpreted alongside physiological studies highlighting specific common development growt

HIV and AIDS in people older than 50. A continuing concern.

The proportion of people with AIDS older than age 50 has remained constant since early in the epidemic. Given this fact, in comparison to the decrease in AIDS cases in other risk groups, it is clear that older adults remain a significant risk group. Despite engaging in behavior which puts them at risk for HIV, older adults are less likely to perceive themselves at risk and to adopt safer sexual and needle sharing behaviors. Aging comes with physiological changes, which increase risk for any infection including HIV. Older adults with HIV are more likely to be diagnosed late in disease, experien

Pulmonary air embolism.

Pulmonary air embolism is a well-known consequence of surgery, trauma, diving, and aviation. This article reviews the physiological effects, means of detection and methods of prevention and treatment of pulmonary air embolism. The primary physiological effects are elevated pulmonary artery pressures, increased ventilation-perfusion inhomogeneity, and right ventricular failure. The degree of physiological impairment depends on the volume of gas entrained, the rate of entrainment, the type of gas entrained, and the position of the patient when the embolism occurs. Chronomes render predictable the otherwise-neglected human "physiological range": position paper of the BIOCOS project. BIOsphere and the COSmos.

On June 30, 1997, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences convened a special session at its headquarters to discuss and, at the end of this meeting, to unanimously endorse a project on "The BIOsphere and the COSmos" (BIOCOS), a follow-up on various international resolutions reviewed elsewhere [1]. BIOCOS recommends the introduction of the science of the body's time structure, chronobiology [2], into basic science and health and environmental care via national physiological and physical monitoring and educational endeavors. More specifically, BIOCOS aims at the collection and archivization for
