Incremental effects of passive stretching added to device-based massage on lower-limb range of motion and neuromuscular response in sedentary adults.

Prolonged sitting restricts lower-limb joint mobility, and conventional device-based massage has limited capacity to expand joint range of motion (ROM). This study examined whether adding a passive stretching module to device-based massage produces additional immediate lower-limb improvements. Forty-one sedentary adults were randomly assigned to two groups: the main group completed conventional massage (CON) followed, in a fixed order, by passive-stretch massage (PST), while an independent control group repeated CON twice. The PST phase produced significantly greater immediate incremental ROM …

A musculoskeletal model with modified patellofemoral kinematics for improved patellar tendon force estimations across motions with a large range of knee flexion.

The estimation of patellar tendon force (PTF) is critical for understanding musculoskeletal loading during physical activity. Accurate PTF estimations, particularly during exercises involving deep knee flexion such as lunges and squats, depend heavily on the patellar tendon moment arm (PTMA). This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a revised PTMA and accompanying patellofemoral kinematics in a contemporary musculoskeletal model to improve PTF estimations across knee flexion angles ranging from 10 to 100 degrees. Biomechanical data were collected from 14 participants (7 with patellar

Effects of Motion-Style Scalp Acupuncture on External Capsule Microstructure and Spinal Reflex Excitability in a Rat Model of Post-Stroke Spasticity.

Post-stroke spasticity (PSS) severely impairs motor function and quality of life after stroke. Disruption of the cortico-reticulospinal pathway and impaired supraspinal descending inhibition are considered important pathological mechanisms; however, the neural and microstructural mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of motion-style scalp acupuncture (MSSA) remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of MSSA on PSS using a multimodal assessment integrating neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and histology in a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion. …

Are we there yet? A systematic review and meta-analysis of the validity and reliability of automated markerless motion capture systems during jumping tasks.

Accurate assessment of jumping is important for sports performance and rehabilitation. While laboratory-based motion capture is considered gold-standard, markerless motion capture (MMC) systems offer an accessible alternative for field and clinical settings. However, their validity and reliability vary, warranting a comprehensive synthesis of current literature. Six databases (CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science) were searched following PRISMA for studies comparing MMC derived kinematics, kinetics or performance with gold-standard measures during vertical or horizontal…

Ankle dorsiflexion range of motion is decreased in parkinson's disease patients with freezing of gait and high l-dopa equivalent daily dose.

INTRODUCTION: The decrease in overall range of motion (ROM) of the joints in Parkinson's disease (PD) contributes to a functional decline. Ankle dorsiflexion required for activities such as walking, climbing, and descending stairs can be a clinically important outcome in this population as well as the presence of freezing of gait (FOG). However, there are no studies that consider this analysis in PD. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and to compare the ankle dorsiflexion ROM in PD patients classified into freezers and non-freezers as well as PD patients and healthy subjects. METHODS: Cross-sectional st…

Can measurement errors explain variance in the relationship between muscle- and tendon stiffness and range of motion?-a blinded reliability and objectivity study.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between range of motion (ROM) and underlying parameters such as stiffness (ST) remains controversial throughout the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the potential role of accumulated measurement errors and subjective influences through a comprehensive assessment of both systematic and random errors on the correlation between tissue ST and ROM. METHODS: A total of 75 subjects participated in this double-blinded reliability evaluation. Besides muscle thickness assessments, lower legs' ST in the calf muscle and Achilles tendon (shear-wave elastogr…

Ultrasound Imaging and Machine Learning to Detect Missing Hand Motions for Individuals Receiving Targeted Muscle Reinnervation for Nerve-Pain Prevention.

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) was initially developed as a technique for bionic prosthetic control but has since become a widely adopted strategy for managing pain and preventing neuroma formation after amputation. This shift in TMR's motivation has influenced surgical approaches, in ways that may challenge conventional electromyography (EMG)-based prosthetic control. The primary goal is often to simply reinnervate nerves to accessible muscles. This contrasts the earlier, more complex TMR surgeries that optimize EMG signal detection by carefully selecting target muscles near the skin's s

Adapting Young Adults' In-Shoe Motion Sensor Gait Models for Knee Evaluation in Older Adults: A Study on Osteoarthritis and Healthy Knees.

The human knee joint is crucial for mobility, especially in older adults who are susceptible to conditions like osteoarthritis (OA). Traditionally, assessing knee health requires complex gait analysis in clinical settings, which limits opportunities for convenient and continuous monitoring. This study leverages advancements in wearable technology to explore the adaptation of models based on in-shoe motion sensors (IMS), initially trained on young adults, for evaluating knee function in older populations, both healthy and with OA. Data were collected from 44 older OA patients, presenting variou…

Effects of the head-elevated position on cervical spine motion during videolaryngoscopic intubation with manual in-line stabilization: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: The head-elevated position during videolaryngoscopic intubation enables better visualization of the glottis than the head-flat position. We hypothesized that the head-elevated position would result in less cervical spine motion during videolaryngoscopic intubation under manual in-line stabilization. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in which we assigned patients undergoing coil embolization for unruptured cerebral aneurysms into the head-elevated (N = 55) or head-flat (N = 54) groups. Manual in-line stabilization was applied to simulate cervical spine immobilization…

Urgent Myectomy for Hemodynamic Instability: Leveraging the Advantages of a Perceval Sutureless Valve for Unexpected Systolic Anterior Motion After Declamping the Aorta.

Sutureless aortic valve replacement (AVR) has been widely recognized for its ability to reduce aortic cross-clamp and cardiopulmonary bypass times while allowing for intraoperative repositioning or reimplantation. However, unexpected complications such as systolic anterior motion (SAM) can arise, necessitating additional surgical interventions. We report the case of a 61-year-old male with a history of hypertension and Behçet's disease in his youth, which had remained clinically inactive. He presented with worsening dyspnea, and preoperative echocardiography revealed moderate aortic stenosis w…
