Feasibility and exploratory outcomes of immersive VR intervention on brain functional networks and clinical symptoms in ADHD children: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Current evaluations of immersive virtual reality (VR) interventions for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) primarily rely on subjective clinical scales. This pilot study investigated the effects of an immersive VR intervention on brain functional networks in children with ADHD using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) degree centrality (DC) and how they correlate with clinical symptoms. METHODS: Fourteen children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD group) and 13 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC group) were recruited.

Modulatory role of the ketogenic diet in glial scar formation after traumatic brain injury: A Fourier transform infrared, Raman, and X-ray fluorescence microscopy study.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) represent a significant clinical challenge, causing not only direct damage to neural tissue but also triggering secondary pathophysiological processes, including glial scar formation. While the glial scar serves a protective role, it simultaneously generates profound biochemical and elemental disturbances that may contribute to secondary neurodegeneration and the development of epilepsy. In recent years, the ketogenic diet (KD), recognized for its anticonvulsant properties, has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy for TBI. However, despite growing interest

Beyond stabilization: barriers and opportunities for sagittal alignment correction with transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion - a single tertiary center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is primarily performed for neural decompression and stabilization in degenerative lumbar disease. Although not intended as a deformity procedure, its biomechanical configuration permits incidental lordosis restoration. The extent of sagittal correction achievable through TLIF and the factors influencing it remain uncertain. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 106 adult patients who underwent single- or multi-level TLIF between 2021 and 2024 at a tertiary academic center. Segmental and global lordosis corrections were measured using st

Targeting cortico-striatal-amygdalar networks via theta-band frontoparietal synchronization in opioid use disorder: a randomized tACS-fMRI Trial.

Theta-band oscillation is integral to fronto-parietal connectivity in the executive control network and its top-down regulation on subcortical areas. External frontoparietal synchronization using theta-frequency transcranial alternating current (tACS) is a technology to potentially engage this network. In this pre-registered, triple-blind, sham-controlled trial (NCT03907644), we tested this intervention targeting the right frontoparietal network in people with opioid use disorder (OUD) to measure network engagement and behavioral outcomes. Sixty male participants with OUD were randomized to re

Ceramide-based machine learning models for the diagnosis of unstable angina: a prospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is a critical public health issue. While traditional biomarkers like cardiac troponin show high sensitivity, their utility in unstable angina (UA) patients is limited. Recent research has identified novel biomarkers, including ceramides, which may correlate with atherosclerotic plaque stability and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) risk. This study aimed to develop a machine learning-based model to evaluate ceramide's diagnostic efficacy in patients with UA. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study from April 2021 to August 2022 at two medical centers, compari

Machine learning predicts postoperative mortality in a Latin American cardiovascular surgery multicenter cohort: Toward precision risk stratification.

OBJECTIVE: A total of 28% of global cardiac surgeries are performed in Latin America; however, surgeons there are faced with many preventable deaths, partly as the result of the lack of accurate, region-specific risk assessment tools. We developed an explainable machine learning (ML) model tailored to a multicenter Latin American cohort that outperformed European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II and Society of Thoracic Surgeons scores in predicting postoperative mortality. METHODS: We analyzed 8680 adult cardiovascular surgery cases (2010-2025) from 5 Latin American countries.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with functional near-infrared spectroscopy to elucidate the neurophysiological mechanisms of post-stroke hemiplegia: a systematic review.

Patients with hemiplegia after stroke often suffer from motor dysfunction, and their recovery is frequently limited by the imbalanced interhemispheric competition and abnormal neural network reorganization. The combined application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has provided a novel closed-loop neuromodulation strategy for the assessment and intervention of post-stroke motor function. This systematic review aims to systematically synthesize clinical research evidence regarding the combined use of TMS and fNIRS in post-stroke motor f

Acute effects of orofacial, neck, and shoulder relaxation exercises and chewing on soleus H-reflex and motor unit discharge patterns.

The interconnected nature of orofacial, neck musculature, and the neural system suggests that localized activities, such as teeth clenching, can influence remote spinal excitability. Although stretching exercises are known to have both local and remote effects, the specific impact of orofacial muscle stretching remains underexplored. This study investigates the effects of two interventions: 25 guided orofacial and neck stretching and mobility exercises (exercises), and chewing six chewing gums for six minutes (chewing), on the soleus H-reflex and D1 presynaptic inhibition. Ten volunteers (mean

Pattern and structural detection in grayscale images through the application of quantile graphs in higher-dimensional spaces.

Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms are adept at managing and classifying a wide range of data formats, including time series, text, and images, addressing challenges in both supervised and unsupervised learning. However, the practical applications of specific algorithms-particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (VTs)-are often constrained by the need for large datasets, extensive training, and complex parameter tuning, which frequently relies on a trial-and-error approach. Other approaches, such as visibility graphs (VGs), often produce netw
