Facility-Based Assessment of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care in Vanga Health Zone, Kwilu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remain unacceptably high. The lack of empirical evidence on the capacity and performance of health facilities offering emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) is a central problem. METHODS: This study assessed the quality of EmONC provision across 63 healthcare facilities in Vanga Health Zone, Kwilu province, DRC. RESULTS: We identified widespread infrastructural deficiencies, including no water sources in 61/63 facilities, no emergency transfer capability, and critically low bed c

Co-designing a student-led digital assessment resource (SCAR-V) to enhance clinical reasoning in undergraduate nursing education: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Developing clinical reasoning and assessment literacy is central to undergraduate nursing education, yet students often struggle to demonstrate higher-level reasoning in written assessments. This study explored how co-design, guided by the Double Diamond framework and Interpretive Descriptive analysis, could inform the creation of a digital resource to support this progression. OBJECTIVES: To examine students' and educators' experiences of assessment and learning across Levels 5 and 6, and to co-design a peer-led digital resource to enhance clarity, authenticity, and inclusion in

Development and validation of an observer-rated scale for self-care behaviors among mildly to moderately disabled community-dwelling elderly.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an observer-rated scale for assessing self-care behaviors among community-dwelling older adults with mild to moderate disabilities (CDESBS-MMD), addressing the critical need for nursing-specific assessment tools beyond one-dimensional or solely self-reported instruments for geriatric nursing practice. METHODS: A two-phase study was conducted. Phase 1 involved instrument development grounded in Orem's self-care theory, including literature review, qualitative interviews, Delphi expert consultation, and pilot testing. Phase 2 evaluated psychometric properties

Effectiveness of a Positive Psychological Intervention Based on the PERMA Model on Fear of Disease Progression in Parents of Children with Acute Leukemia.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy of a positive psychological intervention based on the positive emotion, engagement, relationship, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA) model in reducing the fear of disease progression among parents of children with acute leukemia. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pretest‒post-test design was employed. We recruited parents of children with acute leukemia from a general hospital and divided them into intervention (n=32) and control groups (n=32). The intervention group received an 8-week positive psychological intervention according to the PERMA model. The c

Lived Experience of Patients with Myeloproliferative Neoplasm: An Interpretative Phenomenological Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the lived experiences of patients with MPNs, including daily challenges, disease-related burden, and suggestions for improving care. METHODS: Sixteen patients with essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia vera, or myelofibrosis participated in three focus groups in an Italian hematology outpatient clinic of an academic hospital. Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), and findings were mapped against the person-centered care (PCC) framework to identify implications for care delivery and improvement. RESULTS: Three supe

Implementing Video-Based Education for Multiple Myeloma Patients Preparing for Autologous Stem Cell Transplant: A RE-AIM Evaluation.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic cancer that often requires autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT), a complex procedure that places significant self-management demands on patients and caregivers. Many patients report feeling overwhelmed or unprepared for ASCT, particularly regarding tasks like central line care and subcutaneous injections. To address these challenges, a video-based education intervention, Ready for Transplant (R4T), was implemented to supplement standard in-person nurse-led education. This study used the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance

Barriers to pressure injury prevention and associated factors among critical care nurses in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Pressure injury (PI) remains a major patient safety concern in intensive care, where immobility, high acuity, and workload increase risk. Although guidelines exist, prevention practices in Malaysian tertiary hospitals are inconsistent. Understanding perceived barriers and associated factors among critical care nurses is essential for targeted interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among registered nurses in ICUs, NICUs, PICUs, HDUs, and CCUs across three tertiary hospitals in Perak, Malaysia. Stratified random sampling proportionate to hospital and unit size

Nursing ethical dimensions of euthanasia and medically assisted suicide for older people in need of long-term care.

Euthanasia and medically assisted suicide (E/MAS) are (healthcare-)practices intended to cause a patient's death according to their wish and will. This article addresses the specific ethical questions that arise in the context of E/MAS regarding older adults in need of long-term care (LTC) from a nursing ethics perspective. Older people in need of LTC are particularly vulnerable due to a combination of health-related, social, and economic factors. Multiple chronic diseases, age-related frailty and the subsequent need for LTC, for example, may contribute to an increased risk of social isolation

Impact of Nursing Interventions via Telephone and Email on the Quality of Life of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Preliminary Results of a Comparative Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, is a heterogeneous chronic condition characterized by periods of relapse and remission. Ulcerative colitis involves inflammation of the colon and rectum mucosa, while Crohn's disease causes deeper, transmural inflammation affecting all four gut layers from the mouth to the anus and can lead to complications such as fistulation. IBD significantly impacts patients' physical and psychological well-being, thus reducing their quality of life (QoL). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing int

Stock Inhalers: A Qualitative Data Analysis of Illinois Health Policy Trials and Triumphs.

BACKGROUND: Asthma reliever medication access is critical, especially in schools. Policies that "stock" reliever inhalers in schools provide failsafe medication access. This research aims to understand barriers and facilitators to Illinois stock inhaler policy implementation. METHODS: We conducted 18 semi-structured interviews in 2021-2022 with key school-based and non-school-based partners (school administrators, nurses, governmental agencies, and advocacy leaders). Through Atlas.ti, code frequencies compared (Fisher's exact test), and a thematic analysis performed. RESULTS: Four themes eme

Understanding why delirium is often missed in older emergency department patients: a qualitative descriptive study.

OBJECTIVES: Unrecognized delirium is associated with significant adverse outcomes. Despite decades of effort and educational initiatives, validated screening tools have not improved delirium recognition in the emergency department (ED). There remains a fundamental knowledge gap of why it is consistently missed. The objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of ED physicians and nurses regarding factors contributing to missed delirium in older ED patients. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study at two academic tertiary care EDs in Toronto, Canada. Emergency physician
