Short-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and dynamic brain connectivity in adolescents.

There is some evidence which suggests short-term effects of traffic-related air pollution on brain function in adults. We aimed to examine these associations at ages 10 and 14 years using dynamic functional brain connectivity. We included participants from a population-based birth cohort with brain connectivity and air pollution data at home (n = 3608) or school (n = 2305) in at least one visit. We used land use regression models to estimate levels of air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NOX) and particulate matter (PM), during the week before the outcome measurement. Using resting-state…

Ambient air pollution exposure accelerates the occurrence of 78 non-communicable chronic diseases: an accelerated failure time analysis of a nationwide cohort.

Ambient air pollution is a well-established risk factor for chronic diseases, but its impact on disease onset age remains unclear. This study systematically evaluated the acceleration effect of air pollutants on the onset of 78 chronic diseases using over 900,000 hospitalization records from 396,000 UK Biobank participants. Both particulate matter and nitrogen oxides were associated with accelerated onset of 46 out of 78 diseases (9 cardiovascular diseases, 7 respiratory diseases, 14 psychological/neurological disorders, 3 digestive diseases, 2 cancers, and 11 other chronic diseases). Signific…

Racial disparities in maternal exposure to ambient air pollution during pregnancy and prevalence of congenital heart defects.

Air pollution may be a potential cause of congenital heart defects (CHDs), but racial disparities in this association are unexplored. We conducted a statewide population-based cohort study using North Carolina birth data from 2003 to 2015 (n = 1 225 285) to investigate the relationship between air pollution and CHDs (specifically pulmonary valve atresia/stenosis, tetralogy of Fallot [TOF], and atrioventricular septal defect [AVSD]). Maternal exposure to particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) and ozone during weeks 3 to 9 of pregnancy were estimated using the Environmental Protection A…

PM10 exposure induces bronchial hyperresponsiveness by upreguating acetylcholine muscarinic 3 receptor.

Exposure to particulate matter (PM10) can induce respiratory diseases that are closely related to bronchial hyperresponsiveness. However, the involved mechanism remains to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to demonstrate the effects of PM10 on the acetylcholine muscarinic 3 receptor (CHRM3) expression and the role of the ERK1/2 pathway in rat bronchial smooth muscle. A whole-body PM10 exposure system was used to stimulate bronchial hyperresponsiveness in rats for 2 and 4 months, accompanied by MEK1/2 inhibitor U0126 injection. The whole-body plethysmography system and myography were used t…

Development of a metabolomic risk score for exposure to traffic-related air pollution: A multi-cohort study.

To synthesize vast amounts of high-throughput biological information, omics-fields like epigenetics have applied risk scores to develop biomarkers for environmental exposures. Extending the risk score analytic tool to the metabolomic data would be highly beneficial. This research aimed to develop and evaluate metabolomic risk score (metRS) approaches reflecting the biological response to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure (fine particulate matter, black carbon, and nitrogen dioxide). A simulation study compared three metRS methodologies: elastic net regression, which uses penalized …
