Major depressive disorder, serotonin transporter, and personality traits: why patients use suboptimal decision-making strategies?

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) show suboptimal decision-making strategy in experimental game situations. The influence of personality traits and genetic variations on decision-making is not known. METHODS: Contingency learning based on the cumulative effect of reward and punishment was assessed in 124 patients with unipolar MDD using the ABCD (reward sensitivity) and EFGH (punishment sensitivity) versions of the Iowa Gambling Test. All patients were genotyped for serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and received the Temperament and Character Invent

Anxiety, fears, and phobias in persons with Williams syndrome.

Although much research has focused on the cognitive-linguistic profile associated with Williams syndrome, studies have yet to follow up on preliminary observations suggesting increased anxiety and fears in persons with this disorder. To this aim, Study 1 compared fears in 120 participants with Williams syndrome to 70 appropriately matched persons with mental retardation of mixed etiologies. Study 2 assessed differences in parent versus child reports of fears in 36 Williams syndrome and 24 comparison group parent-child dyads. In Study 3, rates of phobia and other anxiety disorders were assessed

Swiss nursing home residents' perspectives on person-centered care: comparing data from 2013 and 2019.

BACKGROUND: In line with global healthcare policies and initiatives, person-centered care is increasingly promoted as a guiding principle in Swiss long-term care. However, further efforts are needed to ensure it is embedded in practice sustainably. Various existing structural challenges in the long-term care sector can hinder person-centered care and affect nursing home residents’ quality of life. Individual evaluation is therefore essential to developing person-centered care, but such assessment is incomplete without data on residents’ perceptions. As part of the RESPONS study, a representati

Paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissism as predictors of outcome in residential treatment of borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has suggested that residential treatment may be effective in reducing symptoms in patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examined whether paranoia, experiential avoidance, and narcissistic personality features predicted response to residential treatment in a cohort of female patients with symptoms of borderline personality disorder. METHOD: Participants were 87 women with borderline personality disorder symptoms who participated in multimodal residential treatment incorporating elements of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Men

Pain Management and Substance Use Disorders: A Position Statement.

The American Society for Pain Management Nursing and the International Nurses Society on Addictions hold the position that persons with co-occurring pain and substance use disorder have the right to be treated with dignity and respect and receive evidence-based, high-quality assessment and management for both conditions using an integrated, holistic, multidimensional approach. Nonopioid and nonpharmacological approaches to pain management are recommended. Opioids should not be withheld from anyone if necessary to treat pain, and a team-based approach, including pain and addiction specialists,

Prosociality in personality disorders: Status quo and research agenda.

Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by interpersonal dysfunction and deficits in prosociality are theorized to contribute to this. We review studies linking categorical PDs to prosocial and antagonistic traits and highlight studies that assessed prosocial behavior in PDs via economic games. We structure our review based on the recently proposed affordance framework of prosocial behavior, summarizing the evidence for exploitation, reciprocity, temporal conflict, and dependence under uncertainty as situational affordances that allow the expression of personality in prosocial behavior.

Urinary incontinence in older persons: a simple approach to a complex problem.

Urinary incontinence is a major geriatric syndrome with significant morbidity and even mortality. However, it is under-recognised and inadequately managed despite its impact and cost. Continence in the older person is maintained by the fine balance between the integrity of the lower urinary tract, the cognitive ability and motivation to keep dry, and adequate mobility and dexterity to void; impairment of any of the three can result in incontinence. The management of older persons with urinary incontinence involves, i) identifying and reversing transient incontinence, ii) excluding urinary rete

Cardiovascular reactivity during public speaking as a function of personality variables.

An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of a real-life stressor (public speaking) upon cardiovascular reactivity (CVR). Changes in blood pressure and heart rate from baseline to task were measured in a sample of 86 men and women. The purpose was to examine the effects of individual differences (Type A personality, hostility and gender) on CVR. Participants gave a 6-min oral presentation during which they were evaluated by their professor and with classmates as the audience. Results indicated that all participants had marked CVR during public speaking. There were differences in reacti

Diagnostic agreement between the DSM-IV and ICD-10-DCR personality disorders.

The SCID-II Personality Questionnaire, modified for DSM-IV and ICD-10 Diagnostic Criteria for Research (ICD-10-DCR), was administered to 58 consecutive patients with agoraphobia with panic disorder in order to screen for personality disorders (PDs) and assess diagnostic agreement between DSM-IV and ICD-10-DCR. The diagnostic agreement, as expressed by kappa values, was 0.78 for the presence of any personality disorder (PD), but it ranged from 0.51 for schizoid PD to 0.83 for dependent PD. There was a tendency for ICD-10-DCR to overdiagnose PDs, except for borderline and dependent PDs. The sour

The relationship of personality variables and patient recruitment to pain coping strategies and psychological distress in tension headache patients.

The relationship of personality variables and patient recruitment to pain coping strategies and psychological distress was assessed in a Dutch sample of 111 chronic tension headache patients. Using the Coping Strategy Questionnaire (CSQ), high scores on the factor of helplessness proved to be associated with psychological distress. In particular, patients who manifested neuroticism and hostility as personality traits and who were referred for treatment by physicians achieved higher scores on the factor of helplessness. Patients who reported a lower level of pain intensity manifested a higher p

Maintaining function and participation through tailored 24-hour movement behaviours for people living with multiple long-term conditions and frailty (The PERSONAL-AGILITY study): Protocol for a randomised controlled feasibility trial.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining function and participation through tailored 24-hour movement behaviours for people living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) and frailty (The PERSONAL-AGILITY study) is a research programme which aims to develop and evaluate a complex behaviour change intervention. The intervention uses a range of approaches tailored for individuals living with MLTC and frailty, and their carers, incorporating novel technology to improve 24-hour movement behaviours and, consequently, quality of life and physical function. This paper outlines the protocol for a randomised contro

How Personality Shapes Emotional Reactions to Explicit, Implicit, and Positive Media Images of Terror? An Experimental Investigation.

This study investigates the public health consequences of media exposure to terrorism by examining individuals' emotional responses to photographs from the October 7th terror attack, assessing how such imagery interacts with personality traits to influence emotional states. The research aims to explore how these reactions are moderated by personality traits-specifically the Big Five. A diverse sample comprising Israeli Jews (final sample N = 826) viewed media-sourced images categorized as explicit negative (n = 279; e.g., photos of bodies or deceased individuals), implicit negative (n = 269; i

Applying machine learning to ecological momentary assessment data to identify predictors of loss-of-control eating and overeating severity in adolescents: A preliminary investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Several factors (e.g., interpersonal stress, affect) predict loss-of-control (LOC) eating and overeating in adolescents, but most past research has tested predictors separately. We applied machine learning to simultaneously evaluate multiple possible predictors of LOC-eating and overeating severity in pooled and person-specific models. METHOD: Twenty-eight adolescents (78.57% female, age = 15.87 ± 1.59 years, BMI %ile = 92.71 ± 8.86) who endorsed ≥ two past-month LOC-eating episodes completed a week-long ecological momentary assessment protocol. Pooled models were fit to the aggreg

Defense Mechanisms Reloaded in the Light of Impaired Personality Functioning: An Attempt of Clarification and Simplification Resulting in the DSQ-22-A for Adolescents.

With the upcoming ICD-11, the diagnostic guidelines for personality disorders will change fundamentally to a dimensional severity concept, including the evaluation of several domains of personality functioning. Moreover, the lifetime perspective will allow this diagnosis even in early adolescence, providing the opportunity for early detection and intervention. In psychodynamic understanding, defense mechanisms are considered to be a part of the "personality structure", which is one axis in the related diagnostic system (OPD) and showed great similarities to the concept of personality functioni

Behaviour-directed interventions for problematic person transfer situations in two dementia care dyads: a single-case design study.

BACKGROUND: Persons with dementia living in nursing homes need assistance with moving and transfers; however, caregivers assisting persons with dementia in their daily person transfers report strain-related and complicated transfer-related behavioural problems. The reciprocity of complex dyadic transfer-related behaviours is affected by environmental factors, the health status of the person with dementia and the caregiver's skills and knowledge. The aim of this study was to explore tailored interventions guided by a functional behaviour analysis for problematic person transfer situations in tw
