Eating disorder symptom severity scale: a new clinician rated measure.

This study describes the development and validation of the clinician-rated Eating Disorder Symptom Severity Scale (EDS(3)), created to address a gap in measurement options for youth with eating disorders. The EDS(3) is modeled on the Childhood Severity and Acuity of Psychiatric Illness Scales (Lyons, J. S, 1998). Factor analysis revealed a 5-factor solution and accounted for 78% of the variance, and internal consistency within the subscales was good (Cronbach alphas: 0.69 to 0.93). The EDS(3) is a valid and reliable measure designed for clinicians to help assess the severity of a youth's eatin

Specificity of interpersonal problems in generalized anxiety disorder versus other anxiety disorders and depression.

We examined the diagnostic specificity of interpersonal problems (IP) in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). We expected generally higher interpersonal distress, and specifically higher levels of nonassertive, exploitable, overly nurturant, and intrusive behavior in n = 58 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition GAD compared with patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (n = 46), other anxiety disorders (n = 47), and unipolar depressive disorders (n = 47). IP were assessed with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems. Specificity in the sense of hei

Perceived racial/ethnic discrimination, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and health risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents.

Utilizing the concept of race-based traumatic stress, this study tested whether posttraumatic stress symptoms explain the process by which perceived discrimination is related to health risk behaviors among Mexican American adolescents. One hundred ten participants were recruited from a large health maintenance organization in Northern California. Mediational analyses indicated that adolescents who perceived more discrimination reported worse posttraumatic stress symptoms, controlling for covariates. In turn, adolescents who experienced heightened posttraumatic stress symptoms reported more alc

Low life purpose and high hostility are related to an attenuated decline in nocturnal blood pressure.

OBJECTIVE: An attenuation of the nighttime decline in blood pressure (BP) predicts cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular-related mortality, beyond daytime BP levels. We investigated whether positive and negative psychological attributes were associated with sleep-wake BP ratios and examined sleep parameters as potential mediators of these relationships. DESIGN: Two hundred twenty-four participants (50% men; 43% Black; mean age = 60 years) underwent ambulatory BP monitoring for 2 days and nights. Self-reports of positive and negative psychological attributes were collected. In-home polysom

Persistent versus transient depressive symptoms in relation to platelet hyperactivation: a longitudinal analysis of dementia caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms and caregiving stress may contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD) via chronic platelet activation; however, it remains unclear whether this elevated activation constitutes a trait or state marker. The primary objective was to investigate whether persistent depressive symptoms would relate to elevated platelet activation in response to acute psychological stress over a three-year period. METHODS: Depressive symptoms (Brief Symptom Inventory) were assessed among 99 spousal dementia caregivers (52-88 years). Platelet P-selectin expression was assessed in vivo u

A comparative evaluation of panicogenic processes and quality of life in a sample of non-clinical panickers and age and sex matched non-panicking controls.

Contemporary models of panic attacks suggest that panic problems exist on a continuum and highlight the need to understand what differentiates persons who have never had a panic attack versus persons who have had panic attacks but have not yet developed panic disorder (i.e., non-clinical panickers). Accordingly, the present study evaluated several theoretically-relevant factors that were expected to distinguish a sample of (conservatively defined) non-clinical panickers (n=72) from an age and sex-matched comparison sample of non-panicking controls (n=72). As expected, panickers were characteri

Development of a scale assessing students' Appearance Anxiety in Physical Education.

A 14-item self-report scale was developed to measure students' anxiety about their appearance in physical education lessons. Confirmatory factor analysis on 401 students' responses on the Appearance Anxiety in Physical Education Scale (AAPES) supported the existence of two factors with strong internal consistency: Fear of Negative Evaluation, and Anxiety and Avoidance. Both factors correlated with Social Physique Anxiety and Global and Physical Self Concept, in line with expectations. In addition, students who scored high on Appearance Anxiety proved to be those students with higher percent bo

The moderating role of health fear on the relation between smoking status and panic symptoms among adolescents.

The present study examined the moderating role of health fear on the concurrent relation between smoking status and panic attack symptoms among 249 adolescents (132 females, M(age)=14.86 years). As hypothesized, youth high in health fear reported elevations in panic attack symptoms, whereas this relation was relatively weak among those low in health fear. Importantly, these associations were significant after controlling for age, gender, negative affectivity, and anxiety sensitivity. Also as expected, health fear did not moderate the association between smoking status and depressive symptoms,

The emotion reactivity scale: development, evaluation, and relation to self-injurious thoughts and behaviors.

Prior research has examined the relations between various facets of emotion and psychopathology, with a great deal of recent work highlighting the importance of emotion regulation strategies. Much less attention has been given to the examination of emotion reactivity. This study reports on the development and evaluation of the Emotion Reactivity Scale (ERS), a 21-item self-report measure of emotion sensitivity, intensity, and persistence, among a sample of 87 adolescents and young adults. Factor analysis revealed a single factor of emotion reactivity best characterized the data. The ERS showed

Cognitive content and process in eating-disordered patients with obsessive-compulsive features.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the schema-level cognitive content and processes that might explain the presence of compulsive behaviours among patients with eating disorders. METHOD: Each of 62 eating-disordered women completed standardised measures of schema-level core beliefs and cognitive processes, and was interviewed for diagnosis and obsessive compulsive features. RESULTS: Compulsive behaviours were associated with four core beliefs--'mistrust/abuse', 'defectiveness/shame', 'dependence/incompetence' and 'subjugation'. Higher levels of avoidance of emotional arousal were also associated
