Psychosocial Impact of Being Denied as a Living Kidney Donor.

Nationally, nearly 50% of living kidney donor (LKD) candidates are denied the opportunity to donate. We studied the psychosocial impact of denial on LKD candidates and explored potential improvements in the evaluation process. A 21-question survey was developed covering topics related to donation denial including emotional responses, communication experiences, and suggestions for process improvement. Of 193 denied candidates contacted, 64 (33.2%) completed the survey. Respondents reported they were denied due to pre-existing conditions (30%), poor kidney function (25%), anatomic abnormalities

Long term impact of corrective surgeries for oro-facial clefts on oral health related quality of life - a cross sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CLP) is among the most prevalent congenital anomalies, with significant long-term impacts on oral health and psychosocial well-being. Despite multiple surgeries aimed at enhancing both functionality and aesthetics, individuals' perceptions of quality of life (QoL) can vary widely. This study sought to examine the long-term effects of corrective surgeries for orofacial clefts (OFC) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in South India, comparing outcomes between treated CLP patients and apparently healthy individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Early excision and sequelae of facial and cervical burns: A matched-cohort study of 110 patients.

BACKGROUND: Early surgical excision of deep burns is a life-saving strategy, but its impact on long-term sequelae, particularly in the cephalic region, remains insufficiently studied. This is a critical concern, as facial and cervical burns often carry significant functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial consequences. METHODS: We conducted a matched observational cohort study comparing adults with deep facial and/or cervical burns who underwent early excision (<10 days post-injury) versus those treated later (≥10 days). A total of 243 patients were screened, and 55 matched pairs were included

From Prominent to Proportionate: Social Perceptions of Patients With Prominent Ears Undergoing Otoplasty.

Prominent ears are one of the most common congenital craniofacial differences in children. While not functionally impairing, their visibility can cause psychosocial distress, particularly from peer ridicule. Otoplasty is frequently performed to modify auricular projection and normalize appearance; however, its effect on social perception by lay observers remains unclear. This study evaluated how otoplasty influences public perception of pediatric patients. Preoperative and postoperative photographs of 2 patients were rated by 998 adult respondents through an online survey. Participants evaluat

Post-Heroin Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Spectrum: Heroin Addiction as a Generator of Trauma Sensitisation in Everyday Life: A Perspective Review.

Background: Heroin addiction is associated with profound dysregulation of the endogenous opioid and stress response systems, yet current diagnostic frameworks may inadequately capture the traumatising aspects of this condition. This perspective proposes the concept of post-heroin post-traumatic stress spectrum (pH-PTSD/S) as a clinical syndrome emerging from chronic opioid-induced neurobiological and psychosocial dysregulation, even in the absence of Criterion A trauma. Methods: The authors review evidence from neuroendocrinology, behavioural neuroscience, and clinical psychopathology to suppo

Application of causal forest double machine learning (DML) approach to assess tuberculosis preventive therapy's impact on ART adherence.

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is critical for HIV treatment success, yet the impact of tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) remains inadequately understood. Using observational data from 4152 HIV patients in Ethiopia (2005-2024), we applied causal inference methods, including Adjusted Logistic Regression, Propensity Score Matching, and Causal Forest Double Machine Learning (DML), to estimate TPT's effect on ART adherence. The DML approach (leveraging Random Forests and orthogonalization) provided the most precise estimates after model comparison. We found TPT initiation reduced ad

Comparative analysis of the duodenojejunal microbiome with the oral and fecal microbiomes reveals its stronger association with obesity and nutrition.

The intestinal microbiota is increasingly recognized as a crucial player in the development and maintenance of various chronic conditions, including obesity and associated metabolic diseases. While most research focuses on the fecal microbiota due to its easier accessibility, the small intestine, as a major site for nutrient sensing and absorption, warrants further investigation to determine its microbiota composition and functions. Here, we conducted a clinical research project in 30 age- and sex-matched participants with (n = 15) and without (n = 15) obesity. Duodenojejunal fluid was obtaine
