Donor-Recipient Chimeric Cell Transplantation as the Bridging Therapy for Mitigating Total Body Irradiation-Induced Injury.

In recent years, cell-based therapies have emerged as a promising approach for mitigating radiation-induced injury. Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) results from exposure to high doses of radiation over a short time period. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of donor-recipient chimeric cell (DRCC) therapy in mitigating ARS induced by a total body irradiation (TBI) dose of 10 gray (Gy). Thirty irradiated Lewis rats were employed as ARS models to assess the efficacy of systemic-intraosseous transplantation of different cellular therapies in five experimental groups (n = 6/group): saline cont

Neuroprotective Effect of Gold Nanoparticles and Alpha-Lipoic Acid Mixture against Radiation-Induced Brain Damage in Rats.

The current study aims to evaluate the possible neuroprotective impact of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and an alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) mixture against brain damage in irradiated rats. AuNPs were synthesized and characterized using different techniques. Then, a preliminary investigation was carried out to determine the neuroprotective dose of AuNPs, where three single doses (500, 1000, and 1500 µg/kg) were orally administrated to male Wistar rats, one hour before being exposed to a single dose of 7Gy gamma radiation. One day following irradiation, the estimation of oxidative stress biomarkers (mal

Extracellular superoxide dismutase increased the therapeutic potential of human mesenchymal stromal cells in radiation pulmonary fibrosis.

BACKGROUND AIMS: Pulmonary fibrosis induced by irradiation is a significant problem of radiotherapy in cancer patients. Extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD3) is found to be predominantly and highly expressed in the extracellular matrix of lung and plays a pivotal role against oxidative damage. Early administration of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has been demonstrated to reduce fibrosis of damaged lung. However, injection of MSCs at a later stage would be involved in fibrosis development. The present study aimed to determine whether injection of human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (UC-MSC

Innate immune activity in radiation Proctitis.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Radiation proctitis is a common and morbid complication of pelvic radiotherapy, yet its pathophysiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Preclinical models suggest that activation of the innate immune system, particularly the NF-kappaB signaling pathway, plays a key role in regulating intestinal responses to ionizing radiation. This study aimed to investigate the activation of innate immune responses in rectal mucosa during prostate radiotherapy and examine correlations with the development of acute proctitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective observa

Ursodeoxycholic acid for the prevention of severe radiation dermatitis: a single-arm phase I/II trial protocol in patients with breast cancer undergoing postoperative radiotherapy in China.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer poses a significant threat to public health, as demonstrated by its high incidence rate. While postoperative radiotherapy remains an important adjuvant treatment for patients with breast cancer undergoing breast-conserving surgery, radiation-induced dermatitis (RID) is a prevalent side effect, for which no standardised prevention method currently exists. Our previous preclinical research demonstrated that ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) significantly reduced radiation-induced skin damage in mice. Therefore, this phase I/II clinical study aims to further evaluate the safet

A detailed dosimetric comparative study of IMRT and VMAT in normal brain tissues for nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients treated with radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) is the primary treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, it can cause implicit RT-induced injury by irradiating normal brain tissue. To date, there have been no detailed reports on the radiated exact location in the brain, the corresponding radiation dose, and their relationship. METHODS: We analyzed 803 Chinese NPC patients treated with RT and used a CT brain template in a Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) space to compare the group differences in RT dose distribution for different RT technologies (IMRT or VMAT). RESULTS: Brain regions that rec

Neurologic deficit due to vertebral body osteophytes after oblique lumbar interbody fusion: A case report.

RATIONALE: In recent years, oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF), which uses a window between the peritoneum and the iliopsoas muscle to split the muscle to access the lumbar spine, is known as an effective and safe treatment for spinal diseases, such as degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, recurrent disc herniation, and spinal deformity. Despite this fast and useful surgical method, there were often cases of new neurological symptoms or worsening of symptoms after surgery. We analyzed the preoperative risk factors in a patient with neurologic symptoms, such as motor weakness and ex

Regulation of the regeneration of intestinal stem cells after irradiation.

BACKGROUND: Radiation enteritis is common in cancer patients with abdominal and pelvic malignant tumors that have received radiotherapy. Regeneration of intestinal stem cells is a critical process for intestine self-repairing post-irradiation. In this study, we attempted to find out the molecules that promote the regeneration of intestinal stem cells to repair the irradiation damage. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were given a single dose of 12 Gy irradiation, and in vitro cultured organoids were given 6 Gy X-rays to construct the regeneration of intestinal stem cells. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)

Brentuximab vedotin, doxorubicin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine for nonbulky limited-stage classical Hodgkin lymphoma.

Doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (ABVD) with or without radiation is standard therapy for limited-stage Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) but carries risks of bleomycin-induced lung injury and radiation toxicity. Brentuximab vedotin is highly active in relapsed HL and was recently approved with doxorubicin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (AVD) for previously untreated stage III/IV HL. We evaluated brentuximab-AVD for nonbulky stage I/II HL in a multicenter phase 2 study. Patients received a lead-in cycle of brentuximab vedotin monotherapy on days 1 and 15, followed by an exploratory posi

Clinical outcomes and late endocrine, neurocognitive, and visual profiles of proton radiation for pediatric low-grade gliomas.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S): Primary low-grade gliomas are common brain tumors of childhood, many of which require radiation therapy (RT) as definitive treatment. Increased conformality of RT could decrease the incidence and severity of late effects. We report our experience with 32 pediatric patients treated with proton RT. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty-two pediatric patients with low-grade gliomas of the brain or spinal cord were treated with proton RT from 1995 to 2007. Sixteen patients received at least 1 regimen of chemotherapy before definitive RT. The median radiation dose was 52.2 GyRBE (48.
