Pain patients and who they live with: a correlational study of coresidence patterns and pain interference.

BACKGROUND: Mixed associations have been observed between various aspects of 'social support' and patient pain experiences. OBJECTIVE: To explore the possibility that more basic social factors, namely coresidence patterns, may be associated with variability in patient pain experiences. METHODS: Relationships between coresidence partners and self-reported pain that interferes with activities were examined in a large representative sample of home health care patients (n=11,436; age range 18 to 107 years, mean [± SD] age 66.3±16.1 years; 55% females). RESULTS: After controlling for sex, age an

A non-surgical alternative to the management of myopathic ptosis.

Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy (OPMD) is a systemic progressive autosomal dominant myopathy which results in ptosis due to levator weakness. Surgical correction can be complicated by corneal exposure and a non-surgical alternative, such as ptosis props, can be uncomfortable in patients with preserved orbicularis function. We describe a case of a 57-year-old gentleman with OPMD, who declined surgical intervention, and self-manages his ptosis with cosmetic glue.

What's new in bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis?

The use of biochemical profiles and new molecular microbiologic methodologies is transforming our understanding of BV. Most important is the recognition of different subgroups of women who have BV who are at variable risk of certain obstetric and gynecologic complications. New diagnostic tests may soon be available that will allow women to test self-obtained specimens. Treatment of BV has lagged, although innovative methods appear to be helpful in managing recurrent diseases.

Wearable- and Mobile App-Based Activity Pacing and Fatigue Management in Post-COVID-19 Condition: Exploratory Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID-19 fatigue affects millions worldwide; yet, evidence-based management strategies remain limited. Activity pacing, regulating activity to match available energy and minimize symptom exacerbation, may support symptom management, although optimal pacing approaches remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore associations between activity pacing strategies delivered through a mobile app and daily fatigue levels in individuals with post-COVID-19 fatigue. METHODS: In this exploratory observational study, 19 adults with post-COVID-19 fatigue used wearable devices (F

Pediatric urologists' confidence and accuracy in estimating penile curvature.

BACKGROUND: Assessment and management of congenital penile curvature (PC) can be variable. Methods for correction of PC usually are dependent on degree of PC which is reliant on how degree is assessed. We sought to assess the confidence and accuracy of measuring PC and hence management using case-based examples. METHODS: A survey was emailed to members of the Societies for Pediatric Urology. Demographic information, management strategies for PC, and self-reported confidence in measuring PC were assessed. A Likert scale measured self-confidence. Case scenarios were used to assess ability to me

Reported use of intravesical therapy for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC): results from the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) survey.

UNLABELLED: Study Type - Therapy (patterns of practice) Level of Evidence 2b. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Claims-based analyses suggest unexplained and potentially problematic variation in treatment intensity adherence to guidelines-recommended care in NMIBC. Previous physician surveys prior to the contemporary Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) reported associations between variation in NMIBC care and practice type, years in practice, and other physician-related factors. In the largest physician survey addressing the management of NMIBC, and the first to examine

[Gastroesophageal reflux in the French general population: national survey of 8000 adults].

OBJECTIVES: To assess the population-based prevalence in France of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to report its characteristics, consultation rate, modes of management, as well as patients' satisfaction. METHODS: This epidemiological quantitative mail survey sent to a sample of 8000 persons representative of the French adult population comprised 46 questions about GERD, its risk factors, management, last episode, and satisfaction with treatment. GERD was defined in accordance with the guidelines of the 1999 consensus conference as the existence of typical symptoms (heartburn, acid

The prevention and management of urinary tract infections among people with spinal cord injuries. National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research Consensus Statement. January 27-29, 1992.

The Urinary Tract Infection Consensus Conference brought together researchers, clinicians, and consumers to arrive at consensus on the best practices for preventing and treating urinary tract infections in people with spinal cord injuries; the risk factors and diagnostic studies that should be done; indications for antibiotic use; appropriate follow-up management; and needed future research. Urinary tract infection (UTI) was defined as bacteriuria (102 bacteria/ml of urine) with tissue invasion and resultant tissue response with signs and/or symptoms. Asymptomatic bacteriuria represents coloni

[Expert consensus on home management of colorectal cancer patients with enterostomy (2026 version)].

Enterostomy constitutes a crucial intervention in the comprehensive treatment of colorectal cancer, often resulting in significant alterations in patients' body image and defecation patterns post-surgery. During the home-based rehabilitation phase, individuals with an enterostomy encounter not only technical challenges associated with stoma care and the prevention of complications but also psychosocial difficulties such as psychological stress, role adaptation, and barriers to social reintegration. The adoption of evidence-based home management strategies has the potential to enhance patients'

Specialist supportive clinical management for anorexia nervosa: Analysis of therapy content and relation to outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Psychotherapy for anorexia nervosa (AN) is complex and multifaceted, with little known about likely effective components of treatments. The current study explored the spoken content of specialist supportive clinical management (SSCM) for AN, a treatment with evidence of effectiveness in several randomized clinical trials. METHOD: One hundred seventy-eight therapy sessions constituting all ten therapist-patient dyads of those who completed SSCM treatment in the original clinical trial of SSCM, were transcribed verbatim. Themes were developed and content analyzed using qualitative co

Implementation of active injury management (AIM) in youth with acute concussion: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 2 million youth seek acute medical care following concussion in the U.S. each year. Current standard of care recommends rest for the first 48 h after a concussion. However, research suggests that prolonged rest may lengthen recovery time especially for patients with certain risk profiles. Research indicates that physical activity and behavioral management interventions (sleep, stress management) may enhance recovery. To date, there is limited empirical evidence to inform acute (<72 h) concussion recommendations for physical activity and behavioral management in adolescents.

The association of a team management model based on Timing It Right theory with outcomes after cesarean section.

To evaluate whether a team management model based on Timing It Right theory was associated with postoperative recovery, breastfeeding outcomes, and readiness for hospital discharge among women undergoing elective cesarean section. This single-center, nonrandomized quasi-experimental study used a sequential (nonconcurrent) control design. Women undergoing elective cesarean section were recruited by convenience sampling. Participants treated from April to June 2023 received routine perioperative clinical pathway management and served as the control group, whereas participants treated from July t
