Prevalence and patterns of video-EEG abnormalities in children with autism spectrum disorder: Age- and sex-specific findings from a large-scale cross-sectional study.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly exhibit electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities, but age- and sex-related patterns of video-EEG (v-EEG) findings remain incompletely characterized. This retrospective cross-sectional study investigated v-EEG abnormalities in 761 children with ASD aged 1-17 years. All participants underwent at least 4 h of un-sedated v-EEG monitoring. The use of prolonged, un-sedated monitoring enhanced the sensitivity for detecting sleep-activated abnormalities and provided a more representative sample of physiological brain activity. Results revealed t

Lectin YKL-40 Level and Telomere Length are Indicators of Insomnia Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between YKL-40 level, telomere length, and different subtypes of insomnia disorder. METHODS: A total of 145 individuals suffering from insomnia were enrolled and divided into four groups according to the insomniac subtypes: difficulty initiating sleep, early morning awakening, difficulty maintaining sleep, and mixed symptoms. Eighty healthy controls were also collected at the same time. Peripheral leukocyte genomic DNA was extracted, relative telomere lengths were measured using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction method, and YKL-40 leve

A scoping review of the evidence on pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions for idiopathic hypersomnia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) is characterized by excessive sleepiness during the day, prolonged sleep at night, and difficulty waking up. The true prevalence of IH is uncertain. The International Classification of Sleep Disorders provides criteria for diagnosing IH; however, the definition has evolved. Managing IH involves using pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches, although the most effective strategies are still unclear. The objective of this scoping review was to identify the extent, range, and nature of the available evidence, identify research gaps, and discuss t

Sleep and dream disturbances associated with dissociative experiences.

Some dissociative experiences may be related, in part, to REM intrusion into waking consciousness. If so, some aspects of dream content may be associated with daytime dissociative experiences. We tested the hypothesis that some types of dream content would predict daytime dissociative symptomology. As part of a longitudinal study of the impact of dreams on everyday behavior we administered a battery of survey instruments to 219 volunteers. Assessments included the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), along with other measures known to be related to either REM intrusion effects or dissociative

Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder is associated with altered 24-h rest-activity measures.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), the loss of motor inhibition during REM sleep, is a symptom of prodromal Lewy body disease, with over 80% of iRBD patients progressing to Parkinson's disease or dementia with Lewy bodies. Disruption of rest-activity patterns, an established predictor of Parkinson's disease, has not been well characterized in patients with iRBD. Here, we tested the hypothesis that accelerometer-based measures of 24-hour activity would indicate greater fragmentation and variability in patients with iRBD relative to matched healthy controls. Sleep disturbances in a community-based sample of women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

STUDY QUESTION: Is there an excess of sleep disturbances in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in a community-based sample? STUDY ANSWER: Sleep disturbances are almost twice as common in women with PCOS compared with women of similar age without PCOS, with the association slightly accounted for by body weight and, to a greater extent, by depressive symptoms. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is an excess of sleep-disordered breathing in clinical samples of women with PCOS, after accounting for their profile of body weight. Poor sleep patterns increase insulin resistance and thus may exac

Sleep-like slow waves in ADHD: Regional specificity in combined type.

The diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) remains challenging due to the lack of objective neurophysiological markers, particularly for distinguishing clinical subtypes. Here, we investigated whether sleep-like slow wave activity (SWA) during wakefulness could serve as a subtype-specific neural marker for ADHD. Using EEG recordings during the Attention Network Test (ANT), we analyzed behavioral and neurophysiological data from 120 children, including healthy controls (HC), inattentive-type (ADHD-I), and combined-type (ADHD-C) participants. Our research findings indicated

ActiTect: a generalizable machine learning pipeline for REM sleep behavior disorder screening through standardized actigraphy.

Isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is a major prodromal marker of α-synucleinopathies, often preceding the clinical onset of Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, or multiple system atrophy. While wrist-worn actimeters hold significant potential for detecting RBD in large-scale screening efforts by capturing abnormal nocturnal movements, they require a reliable and efficient analysis pipeline. This study presents ActiTect, a fully automated, open-source machine learning tool to identify RBD from actigraphy recordings. To ensure generalizability across heteroge

Investigating Genioglossus Electromyograms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients and Healthy Subjects During Wakefulness.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent source of sleep-disordered breathing that is generally caused by common factors in modern life. OSA is most commonly associated with dysfunctions in the genioglossus. Thus, we aim to develop a genioglossus electromyogram (GG-EMG) mouthpiece connected to a device for diagnosis. This work presents the first part of the process: reading the GG-EMG. We use 10-second readings from 10 healthy subjects and 9 OSA patients aged 24-83 years during rest and activity. We then extract 37 features from each EMG, perform a Wilcoxon rank sum test, and ext

Cell Type-Specific Contributions of UBE3A to Angelman Syndrome Behavioral Phenotypes.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss of expression of the maternal UBE3A allele and is characterized by a constellation of impactful neurologic symptoms. While previous work has uncovered outsized contributions of GABAergic neuron-selective Ube3a deletion to seizure susceptibility and electroencephalography (EEG) phenotypes in a mouse model of AS, the neuronal populations governing a broader range of behaviors have not been studied. Here, we used male and female mice to test the consequences of Ube3a deletion from GABAergic or glutamatergic neurons across

Dreams and Nightmares during the First and Second Wave of the COVID-19 Infection: A Longitudinal Study.

Recent literature shows that the Coronovirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has provoked significant changes in dreaming. The current study intends to provide an update about dream variable changes during the second wave of COVID-19. A total of 611 participants completed a web survey from December 2020 to January 2021. Statistical comparisons showed that subjects had lower dream-recall frequency, nightmare frequency, lucid-dream frequency, emotional intensity, and nightmare distress during the second than the first wave of the pandemic. Dreams had a higher negative tone during the second than first wa

Predictors of drug-resistance in epilepsy with auditory features.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate predictors of drug-resistance in epilepsy with auditory features (EAF). METHODS: Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) was defined according to International League Against Epilepsy guidelines. For univariate analysis, the chi-squared, Fisher's exact, and Mann-Whitney test were used. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of predictors were estimated by logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: A total of 107 patients (52 male) between the ages of 13.0 and 78.8 years were included in this cohort. In univariate analysis, ten variables, including age at seizure onse

Periodic breathing in healthy humans at exercise in hypoxia.

Periodic breathing is frequent in heart failure or ventilatory disorders during sleep, and common during sleep at high altitude, but has been rarely studied in wakefulness and during exercise. A retrospective analysis of ventilation from hypoxia exercise tests was realized in 82 healthy subjects separated into two groups with either high or low ventilatory response to hypoxia at exercise (HVRe). A fast Fourier transform spectral analysis of the breath-by-breath ventilation (V̇e) signal, O2 saturation, and end-tidal PCO2 evidenced a periodic pattern with a period of 11.1 to 12.0 s. The peak pow

Hemodynamic and autonomic changes in adults with obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by repetitive episodes of complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway during sleep that lead to an increase in airway resistance and respiratory effort. This may produce oxygen desaturation, hypercapnia and central nervous system arousal that restore airflow. OSA is associated with hemodynamic changes that are related to alterations in the activity of the autonomic nervous system. During the course of an apnea, the heart rate may slow down, increase or remain stable. The blood pressure decreases at the start of the apnea and increases at i

Modafinil effects during acute continuous positive airway pressure withdrawal: a randomized crossover double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

RATIONALE: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) use is associated with reduced motor vehicle accidents in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, interruption of CPAP therapy is common and is associated with a decline in daytime function. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the wakefulness promoter, modafinil, would ameliorate this decline. METHODS: Patients were admitted to the laboratory for three consecutive nights. CPAP was used for the first night, followed by a baseline day, and was then withdrawn for the two subsequent nights (nasal airflow monitored). On each of the

Pharmacological treatment for the prevention of delirium: review of current evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Delirium is a very common and serious disorder with high morbidity and mortality. Despite symptomatic treatment the outcome can be poor for some especially when no underlying cause is identified. As a result, various strategies for delirium prevention have been assessed. Pharmacological agents such as antipsychotics, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, sleep-wake cycle regulators, anti-inflammatories and others have been advocated for a potential role in delirium prevention. The aim of this paper is to review the available evidence for their use in the prevention of delirium. METHODS:

Functional brain networks in DYT1 dystonia.

Early-onset idiopathic torsion dystonia (ITD) is an autosomal dominant hyperkinetic movement disorder with incomplete penetrance, associated with a 3 base-pair deletion in the DYT1 gene on chromosome 9q34. To determine the metabolic substrates of brain dysfunction in DYT1 dystonia, we scanned 7 nonmanifesting and 10 affected DYT1 carriers and 14 normal volunteers with [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose and positron emission tomography. We found that DYT1 dystonia is mediated by the expression of two independent regional metabolic covariance patterns. The first pattern, identified in an analysis of nonman

The relationship between sleep disturbances, depression and anxiety in differentiated thyroid cancer patients during radioiodine (131I) therapy: a longitudinal observational study.

BACKGROUND: The temporal dynamics of sleep disturbances following radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), along with their underlying mechanisms and associated factors, remain poorly understood. This gap underscores the need for longitudinal investigations. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study of 160 DTC patients from Guangdong Southern Teaching Hospital. Self-assessment scales were used to assess patients' knowledge of the purpose of ¹³¹I therapy, depression, anxiety symptom and sleep assessment scales were used to assess with the Pittsburgh Sleep Qual
