Linking Risk Perceptions and Information Acquisition to Preventive Behaviors: An Application of the Extended Integrative Model of Behavioral Prediction in Italy and the United States During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, rapidly evolving health guidance and widespread misinformation posed unprecedented challenges for quality health communication. This study examines how individuals navigated this changing information environment by extending the integrative model of behavioral prediction (IMBP) to explore how risk perceptions and information acquisition relate to preventative behavioral intentions (mask-wearing and social distancing) via cognitive beliefs (attitudes, perceived norms, self-efficacy) across the U.S. (n = 333) and Italy (n = 331). In Italy, risk perceptions predicted

Designed for Disparity: The Structural Origins of Migrant Farmworker Health Inequities in Maryland, 1900‒1950.

The COVID-19 pandemic has renewed attention to farmworker health disparities, prompting scholars to examine the structural determinants of agricultural worker health. Through analysis of archival materials, government documents, and period newspapers, we trace the evolution and institutionalization of migrant farm labor on Maryland's Eastern Shore from 1900 to 1950. We identify four key periods of transformation: the postemancipation agricultural adjustment (1900-1915), the rise of seasonal commodity agriculture (1915-1930), the response to mass displacement (1930-1940), and wartime labor mana

Beyond COVID-19: Behavioral Drivers of Pandemic Prevention in Ghana's Informal Urban Settlements.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted significant disparities in the uptake of precautionary health behaviors, particularly in informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where access to essential infrastructure and socio-economic opportunities are limited. This study applied the information-motivation-behavioral (IMB) skills model of pandemic risk and prevention to explore the pathways through which COVID-19 information, personal and social motivation, and behavioral skills influenced the uptake of prevention behaviors in three informal settlements in Ghana. A survey of 496 participants was

Legal responses to women's drug use during reproductive years: Implications for reproductive health and access to care.

This study examines how the criminalization of women's drug use during their reproductive years affects their access to reproductive healthcare, legal treatment, and psychosocial wellbeing. Using a qualitative research design, the study employed semi-structured interviews with women affected by drug-related criminalization, healthcare providers, legal professionals, and policy-related stakeholders in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, China. The findings reveal that criminalization functions as a major barrier to timely healthcare access by generating fear, stigma, and mistrust of formal instit

Childhood Verbal Abuse: Expert-Informed Delphi Consensus on Definition and Actions.

While existing psychological maltreatment frameworks recognize verbally aggressive behaviors as a key mechanism of harm, childhood verbal abuse has not been independently operationalized as a distinct construct, complicating recognition and response across safeguarding systems. Prevalence estimates vary widely from 18% to 92%, reflecting inconsistent operationalization across studies. This study combined systematic review of 275 sources with expert consultation to establish a consensus-based definition. A six-round Delphi process involved 21 experts with lived experience or professional expert

Supporting street medicine through medical informatics: a manifesto on research needs.

Homeless individuals face major barriers in accessing regular healthcare, leading to the development of street medicine as a distinct humanitarian field. To enhance continuity and quality of care, consistent documentation is crucial. However, electronic health records are rarely used in European street medicine. An interdisciplinary European workshop identified four key research fields for medical informatics in street medicine: (1) Research ethics: The creation of ethical guidelines that promote co-creation and active communication with patients. (2) System development: Designing a secure, an

[Communication in later life under institutional conditions : Professional perspectives on communication of ageing people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities].

BACKGROUND: For people with (profound) intellectual and multiple disabilities verbal language is often not the primary means of communication. Communication is closely tied to familiar persons and the interpretation of individual forms of expression. In later life health-related changes, the loss of social relationships and institutional transitions can substantially impair communication. OBJECTIVE: Based on group interviews with professionals this paper examines the significance of communication partners, the professional and institutional prerequisites for successful communication in later

Description, Articulation and Limitations in the Social Theory of Insurance.

There have been surprisingly few sustained efforts to explain or theorise the role insurance plays in society. Even the most theoretically inflected insurance scholarship, emanating from governmentality and Actor Network Theory scholarship, tends to be grounded in empirical cases, set in particular periods and places, and it is often ambivalent toward the label of theory. It is surprising both because of the foundationally social character of insurance and because of its sheer heft - economically and politically insurance is everywhere and involved, somehow, in everything. As many working in t

Utility-driven cooperation and emergent group diversity in the N-player Stag Hunt game: A framework relevant to collective biological behavior.

The coordination dilemma inherent in the N-player Stag Hunt game provides a powerful framework for studying the emergence of cooperation in social and biological systems. Traditional analyses of this game emphasize the tension between individual risk aversion and collective benefit. In this study, we extend the classical N-player Stag Hunt model by incorporating utility functions that formalize how intra-group cooperation and inter-group competition interact. Using this framework, we derive the Nash equilibria analytically, revealing how different utility formulations can generate a wide spect

Making space for sexuality in the therapy room: A qualitative study exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people in psychological therapy in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: LGBTQ+ people in the UK are exposed to social stigma, abuse and discrimination, which often translates to increased prevalence of mental health difficulties due to minority stress. Despite its relevance as a facet of identity, sexuality is generally ignored or pathologised in mental health services. Therefore, this research aimed to explore and understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in psychological therapy; specifically, how sexuality features within the therapeutic process. DESIGN: Social constructivist qualitative study. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were compl

From competencies to action: unpacking the path from students' sustainability competencies to self-reported prosocial behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Achieving social sustainability requires a deeper understanding of how individual competencies are associated with active prosocial actions. This cross-sectional study examined the associations between higher education students' key competencies in sustainability (KCiS) and their self-reported prosocial behavior, focusing on the mediating role of prosocial norms, and the moderating influence of individual cultural orientations (horizontal and vertical collectivism). METHODS: Grounded in Norm-Activation Theory and informed by Social Learning Theory, structural equation modeling (

Do We Need a Predischarge Psychosocial Evaluation? A Case Report on Peri-Allograft Abscess in a Noncompliant Elderly Kidney Transplant Patient.

Although postrenal transplant surgical site infections are relatively uncommon, we present the case of a 72-year-old diabetic and hypertensive male patient who developed a delayed peri-graft abscess and severe surgical site infection due to a closed drain exit site infection 1 month following a living-related kidney transplant. While the transplant itself was successful and the patient had passed the pretransplant psychosocial evaluation, their post-transplant noncompliance and unresolved social barriers-such as missed outpatient follow-up appointments-significantly contributed to these compli
