[Chronic recurrent annular neutrophilic dermatosis].

BACKGROUND: Chronic recurrent annular neutrophilic dermatosis (CRAND) is a rare form of neutrophilic dermatosis characterised by chronic annular progression, histological impairment similar to that seen in Sweet's syndrome and the absence of association with generalised signs, abnormal laboratory values or underlying systemic disease. Herein we report two new cases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case no 1. A 41-year-old woman had presented with four annular lesions on the forearms and neckline which she had had for one year. Examination revealed a 5-cm annular lesion on the right forearm and four sim

Acute White Matter Tract Damage after Frontal Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Our understanding of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is still in its infancy and to gain a greater understanding, relevant animal models should replicate many of the features seen in human mTBI. These include changes to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters, absence of anatomical lesions on conventional neuroimaging, and neurobehavioral deficits. The Maryland closed head TBI model causes anterior-posterior plus sagittal rotational acceleration of the brain, frequently observed with motor vehicle and sports-related TBI injuries. The injury reflects a concussive injury model without skull

Reducing Timp3 or vitronectin ameliorates disease manifestations in CADASIL mice.

OBJECTIVE: CADASIL is a genetic paradigm of cerebral small vessel disease caused by NOTCH3 mutations that stereotypically lead to the extracellular deposition of NOTCH3 ectodomain (Notch3(ECD) ) on the vessels. TIMP3 and vitronectin are 2 extracellular matrix proteins that abnormally accumulate in Notch3(ECD) -containing deposits on brain vessels of mice and patients with CADASIL. Herein, we investigated whether increased levels of TIMP3 and vitronectin are responsible for aspects of CADASIL disease phenotypes. METHODS: Timp3 and vitronectin expression were genetically reduced in TgNotch3(R16

The Genetics of Axon Guidance and Axon Regeneration in Caenorhabditis elegans.

The correct wiring of neuronal circuits depends on outgrowth and guidance of neuronal processes during development. In the past two decades, great progress has been made in understanding the molecular basis of axon outgrowth and guidance. Genetic analysis in Caenorhabditis elegans has played a key role in elucidating conserved pathways regulating axon guidance, including Netrin signaling, the slit Slit/Robo pathway, Wnt signaling, and others. Axon guidance factors were first identified by screens for mutations affecting animal behavior, and by direct visual screens for axon guidance defects. G

Blepharospasm in a multiplex African-American pedigree.

BACKGROUND: Isolated blepharospasm (BSP) is a late-onset focal dystonia characterized by involuntary contractions of the orbicularis oculi muscles. Genetic studies of BSP have been limited by the paucity of large multiplex pedigrees. Although sequence variants (SVs) in THAP1 have been reported in rare cases of BSP, the genetic causes of this focal dystonia remain largely unknown. Moreover, in the absence of family history and strong in silico or in vitro evidence of deleteriousness, the pathogenicity of novel SVs in THAP1 and other dystonia-associated genes can be indeterminate. METHODS: A la

Early inflammatory damage to intestinal neurons occurs via inducible nitric oxide synthase.

Intestinal inflammation affects the enteric nervous system (ENS) that lies adjacent to the smooth muscle layers. Previously, we showed that the loss of ENS neurons in animal models such as tri-nitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis was a limited and early event despite progressive worsening of inflammation. Here, we demonstrated that the rapid appearance of activated immune cells in the intestinal wall is selectively neurotoxic via iNOS-derived NO, using TNBS-induced colitis in both rats and mice, and a co-culture model of ENS neurons and smooth muscle. An influx of neutrophils and

Influence of Ambient Illumination on the Use of Olfactory and Visual Signals by a Nocturnal Hawkmoth During Close-Range Foraging.

As a goal-directed behavior, foraging for nectar functions on the basis of a sequence of innate stereotyped movements mainly regulated by sensory input. The operation of this inherited program is shaped by selective pressures acting on its efficiency, which is largely dependent upon the way the system handles sensory information. Flowers offer a wealth of signals, from odors acting as distant attractants, to colors eliciting approximation and feeding responses, to textures guiding feeding responses toward a reservoir of nectar. Thus, animals use different signals in the regulation of particula

Forebrain circuits underlying the social modulation of vocal communication signals.

Across vertebrate species, signalers alter the structure of their communication signals based on the social context. For example, male Bengalese finches produce faster and more stereotyped songs when directing song to females (female-directed [FD] song) than when singing in isolation (undirected [UD] song), and such changes have been found to increase the attractiveness of a male's song. Despite the importance of such social influences, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the social modulation of communication signals. To this end, we analyzed differences in immediate early gene (E

Individuals with Smith-Magenis syndrome display profound neurodevelopmental behavioral deficiencies and exhibit food-related behaviors equivalent to Prader-Willi syndrome.

Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with intellectual disability, sleep disturbances, early onset obesity and vast behavioral deficits. We used the Behavior Problems Inventory-01 to categorize the frequency and severity of behavioral abnormalities in a SMS cohort relative to individuals with intellectual disability of heterogeneous etiology. Self-injurious, stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive behavioral scores indicated that both frequency and severity were significantly higher among individuals with SMS relative to those with intellectual disability. Abnormal frontal theta oscillations underlie the cognitive flexibility deficits in children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in cognitive flexibility have been suggested to underlie the repetitive and stereotyped behavior in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Because cognitive flexibility is primarily mediated by the frontal lobe, where structural and functional abnormalities have been extensively found in these individuals, it is conceivable that their deficits in cognitive flexibility are related to abnormal activations of the frontal lobe. The present study investigates cognitive flexibility and its underlying neurophysiological activities as indicated by theta oscillations in c

Widespread Chemical Detoxification of Alkaloid Venom by Formicine Ants.

The ability to detoxify defensive compounds of competitors provides key ecological advantages that can influence community-level processes. Although common in plants and bacteria, this type of detoxification interaction is extremely rare in animals. Here, using laboratory behavioral assays and analyses of videotaped interactions in South America, we report widespread venom detoxification among ants in the subfamily Formicinae. Across both data sets, nine formicine species, representing all major clades, used a stereotyped grooming behavior to self-apply formic acid (acidopore grooming) in resp

Tissue-specific control of midbody microtubule stability by Citron kinase through modulation of TUBB3 phosphorylation.

Cytokinesis, the physical separation of daughter cells at the end of cell cycle, is commonly considered a highly stereotyped phenomenon. However, in some specialized cells this process may involve specific molecular events that are still largely unknown. In mammals, loss of Citron-kinase (CIT-K) leads to massive cytokinesis failure and apoptosis only in neuronal progenitors and in male germ cells, resulting in severe microcephaly and testicular hypoplasia, but the reasons for this specificity are unknown. In this report we show that CIT-K modulates the stability of midbody microtubules and tha

The plasticity of inflammatory monocyte responses to the inflamed central nervous system.

Over the last three decades it has become increasingly clear that monocytes, originally thought to have fixed, stereotypic responses to foreign stimuli, mediate exquisitely balanced protective and pathogenic roles in disease and immunity. This balance is crucial in core functional organs, such as the central nervous system (CNS), where minor changes in neuronal microenvironments and the production of immune factors can result in significant disease with fatal consequences or permanent neurological sequelae. Viral encephalitis and multiple sclerosis are examples of important human diseases in w

Antipsychotic property of solvent-partitioned fractions of Lonchocarpus cyanescens leaf extract in mice.

BACKGROUND: This study was carried out to evaluate the antipsychotic property of solvent-partitioned fractions of the leaf extract of Lonchocarpus cyanescens (LC), a reputable medicinal plant used in folk medicine for the treatment of mental illnesses in Nigeria. METHODS: The n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction (EAF), and aqueous ethanol fraction (AEF) of LC were tested for antipsychotic property based on the antagonism of stereotypy induced by apomorphine (APO). Antagonism of hyperactivity and lethality in aggregated mice induced by amphetamine (AMPH) were further employed for screenin

Long-term behavioral effects of neonatal blockade of gastrin-releasing peptide receptors in rats: similarities to autism spectrum disorders.

Gastrin releasing peptide, the mammalian counterpart of the amphibian peptide, bombesin, has been increasingly implicated in regulating normal brain function as well as in the pathogenesis of psychiatric and/or neurodevelopmental disorders. We have previously shown that the neonatal blockade of the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPr) in rats produces long-lasting consequences during central nervous system development that are commonly observed in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders. The present investigation assessed in further detail, long-term behavioral effe

Free-swimming northern elephant seals have low field metabolic rates that are sensitive to an increased cost of transport.

Widely ranging marine predators often adopt stereotyped, energy-saving behaviours to minimize the energetic cost of transport while maximizing energy gain. Environmental and anthropogenic disturbances can disrupt energy balance by prompting avoidance behaviours that increase transport costs, thereby decreasing foraging efficiency. We examined the ability of 12 free-ranging, juvenile northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) to mitigate the effects of experimentally increased transport costs by modifying their behaviour and/or energy use in a compensatory manner. Under normal locomotion

[Influence of radiation on survivability, behavior and neurochemical correlates of rats].

The aim of the work was to study the dependence of individual radiosensitivity of white and black rats on radiation. The rats under study were derived from a cross between black and white rats and called Ratus Ratus-Georgia. Comparative radiosensitivity of white (Wistar) and black rats was studied at a total exposure with sublethal and lethal doses (5, 7 and 9 Gy). Cumulative survival functions of rats, a spectrum of changes in some ethological parameters and content of serotonin and catecholamines in their brain structures were given as criteria of radiosensitivity. Survival rate of black and

Perching mate-locating strategy in Paysandisia archon (Lepidoptera: Castniidae): behavioral and morpho-physiological investigations.

We studied Paysandisia archon (Burmeister) (Lepidoptera: Castniidae: Castniinae) courtship behavior to provide a detailed qualitative and quantitative description of male and female behaviors. Moreover, to investigate the role of antennal olfaction and visual stimuli in mate-recognition, bioassays with antennectomized adults and dummies were performed. To assess the presence of a pheromone gland in the ovipositor, morphological (using light and scanning electron microscopic techniques), electrophysiological, and chemical investigations were carried out. We observed perching mate-locating behav

Longitudinal trajectories of aberrant behavior in fragile X syndrome.

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Community (ABC-C; Aman et al., 1995) has been increasingly adopted as a primary tool for measuring behavioral change in clinical trials for individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS). To our knowledge, however, no study has documented the longitudinal trajectory of aberrant behaviors in individuals with FXS using the ABC-C. As part of a larger longitudinal study, we examined scores obtained on the ABC-C subscales for 124 children and adolescents (64 males, 60 females) with FXS who had two or more assessments (average interval between assessments was approximately
