Drought, abscisic acid and transpiration rate effects on the regulation of PIP aquaporin gene expression and abundance in Phaseolus vulgaris plants.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Drought causes a decline of root hydraulic conductance, which aside from embolisms, is governed ultimately by aquaporins. Multiple factors probably regulate aquaporin expression, abundance and activity in leaf and root tissues during drought; among these are the leaf transpiration rate, leaf water status, abscisic acid (ABA) and soil water content. Here a study is made of how these factors could influence the response of aquaporin to drought. METHODS: Three plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) or aquaporins were cloned from Phaseolus vulgaris plants and their express

Diurnal changes in photochemical efficiency, the reduction state of Q, radiationless energy dissipation, and non-photochemical fluorescence quenching in cacti exposed to natural sunlight in northern Venezuela.

Diurnal measurements of chlorophyll a fluorescence from cacti (Nopalea cochenillifera, Opuntia ficus-indica, and Opuntia wentiana) growing in northern Venezuela were used to determine photochemical fluorescence quenching related to the reduction state of the primary electron acceptor of PS II as well as non-photochemical fluorescence quenching which reflects the fraction of energy going primarily into radiationless deexcitation. The cladodes used in this study were oriented such that one surface received direct sunlight in the morning and the other one during the afternoon. Both surfaces exhib

Percutaneous hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) of mitomycin C and floxuridine (FUDR): an effective treatment for metastatic colorectal carcinoma in the liver.

The response rate of metastatic colorectal carcinoma confined to the liver to HAI of FUDR alone is at the range of 50% and to mitomycin C by … hom continued treatment. Chemotherapy-related complications included primarily thrombocytopenia and stomatitis. Mitomycin C + FUDR by hepatic arterial infusion is an effective treatment for colorectal carcinoma metastatic to the liver. The high response rate justifies the adjuvant treatment of Dukes class C colon cancer patients with this treatment.

Studies on complement-potentiated neutralizing antibodies (C'-PNAb) induced in rabbits inoculated with japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). I. The nature of C'-PNAb.

The C'-PNAb induced by JEV grown in porcine kidney stable (PS) cells [JEV(PS)] inactivate not only the corresponding virus, hut also Western equine encephalitis (WEE), Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), vesicular stomatitis (VS) and Sindbis viruses grown in PS cells or primary hamster kidney (HK) cell cultures in the presence of complement. The degree of complement-potentiated neutralizing (C'-PN) ability varies for each virus. The C'-PNAb do not, inactivate these viruses grown in mouse brain, even JEV. The C'-PN activity against viruses other than JEV(PS) is completely removed by absorption w…

Protective role of TGF-β1 (-509C>T, rs1800469) single-nucleotide polymorphism against radiation toxicities in locally advanced head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC), predominantly head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), poses a significant health burden globally. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has improved outcomes in HNC; however, radiation-induced toxicities, particularly oral mucositis and dermatitis, remain critical concerns. Genetic variations, such as single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TGF-β1 gene (-509C>T, rs1800469), may modulate these toxicities and impact treatment response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational analytical study included 50 patients with locally advanced

Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and wet-adhesive poly(ionic liquid)-based oral patch for the treatment of oral ulcers with bacterial infection.

Oral aphthous ulcers are a common inflammatory efflorescence of oral mucosa, presenting as inflammation and oral mucosal damage and manifesting as pain. The moist and highly dynamic environment of the oral cavity makes the local treatment of oral aphthous ulcers challenging. Herein, a poly(ionic liquid)-based diclofenac sodium (DS)-loaded (PIL-DS) buccal tissue adhesive patch fabricated with intrinsically antimicrobial, highly wet environment adhesive properties and anti-inflammatory activities to treat oral aphthous ulcers was developed. The PIL-DS patch was prepared via polymerization of a c

Six cases of Solobacterium moorei isolated alone or in mixed culture in Hungary and comparison with previously published cases.

Solobacterium moorei is a strict anaerobic gram-positive rod. It is found in the human microbiota in different parts of the body, but it also appears to be an opportunistic pathogen in some infectious processes. We describe six cases of severe infections identified in 2016 in which S. moorei was isolated alone or in mixed culture involving other anaerobes or both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Three cases were associated with the oral cavity, including a middle ear infection, a wound infection after total laryngectomy, and a mandibular abscess as a result of bisphosphonate therapy.
