Rasch analysis and targeting assessment of the teach-CVI survey tool in a cohort of CVI patients.

PURPOSE: Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of pediatric visual impairment. Given the diversity of clinical presentations … in the sample had a co-occurring visual disorder in addition to CVI (84%), the most frequent being strabismus (69.9%) or visual field loss (25.3%). Item measures ranged from -2.67 to 1.77 logits (SD = 0.76), with a mean of 0 logit by convention. Estimated person measures ranged from -2.19 to 3.08 logits (SD = 1.10) with a mean of -0.03 logit. The range of i …

Hess Lancaster Screen Test with Eye Tracker: An Objective Method for the Measurement of Binocular Gaze Direction.

BACKGROUND: To objectively measure with an eye tracker both eye movement conjugacy and gaze direction in different positions when performing the Hess Lancaster Screen Test (HLST) in a sample of control subjects without binocular dysfunction and compare the results with those of the traditional subjective HLST performance. METHODS: The sample was selected avoiding subjects who suffered from suppression of one of the two eyes, visual acuity less than 20/25 on the Snellen chart in each eye, strabismus, or any symptom of binocular dysfunction that could alter the results. While performing the HLS…

Early Screening of Visual Processing Dysfunctions in Children Born Very or Extremely Preterm.

Introduction: Children with early brain damage or dysfunction are at risk of developing cerebral visual impairment (CVI), including visual p … nd 6 children had both. Subsequent ophthalmic exams (N = 14) showed severe hypermetropia in 21% and strabismus in 14%. VFA (N = 10) showed abnormal visual function and behavior in only 1 child. At 2 years CA, the total group showed an increase in abnormal VOF. Whereas the children at risk showed some normalization, the group without VPD risk at 1 year CA sho …

Addressing the Horizontal Gender Division of Labor: A Case Study of Support and Obstacles in a Heavy Industry Plant in Iceland.

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) continues to be a frequent and important cause of morbidity in children. Postoperative vomiting (PO … so must be considered. The two most common emetogenic surgical procedures evaluated in children are strabismus repair and adenotonsillectomy. The approach to the management of PONV and POV in children is similar to that in adults. However, as the rate of POV is more frequent in children than in adults, more children are candidates for antiemetic prophylaxis. …

[Transethmoidal decompressive orbitotomy in the patients presenting with endocrine ophthalmopathy at the stage of remission: peculiarities of the surgical intervention and the results of exophthalmos correction].

The objective of the present study was to analyze the original results of the transethmoidal decompressive surgical interventions on the eye … se of visual acuity deterioration was documented during the follow-up period. Persistent convergent strabismus and post-operative diplopia developed in 18% of the patients. Regress of exophthalmos following transethmoidal decompressive orbitotomy varied from 3.5 to 6.5 mm and averaged 5.1 mm in comparison with the mean initial value of 23.9 mm. In means that …

Binocular vision interference from unequal inputs in an adult patient with monocular dense acquired cataract.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of the unequal visual inputs in uniocular cataracts is addressed through the hypothesis that a marked inequality of … ontrast sensitivity, binocular function, ocular motility and cover test to evaluate the presence of strabismus, and a slit lamp assessment of cataract density were performed. Neuroimaging: Functional MRI was run in a 1.5T Philips Intera Master with a SENSE neurovascular coil of 8 channels. The experimental design included three conditions: a) Binocular: both …

Adaptive neural mechanism for Listing's law revealed in patients with skew deviation caused by brainstem or cerebellar lesion.

PURPOSE: Skew deviation is a vertical strabismus caused by damage to the otolithic-ocular reflex pathway and is associated with abnormal ocular torsion. This study was conducted to determine whether patients with skew deviation show the normal pattern of three-dimensional eye control called Listing's law, which specifies the eye's torsional angle as a function of its horizontal and vertical position. METHODS: Ten patients with skew deviation caused by brain stem or cerebellar lesions and nine normal control subjects were studied. Patients with diplopia and neurologic symptoms less than 1 mont…

Postulating a role for connective tissue elements in inferior oblique muscle overaction (an American Ophthalmological Society thesis).

PURPOSE: To compare the localization and density of collagens I, IV, VI, and elastin, the major protein components of connective tissue, in the inferior oblique muscle of patients with overelevation in adduction and in controls and to characterize changes that develop following surgery. Biomechanical studies suggest that the connective tissue matrix plays a critical role in extraocular muscle function, determining tensile strength and force transmission during contraction. METHODS: Prospective laboratory-based case-control study of inferior oblique muscle specimens from 31 subjects: 16 with p

Ocular involvement in the fetal alcohol syndrome.

Maternal alcohol abuse during pregnancy causes malformations of the eyes with serious consequences to the vision of the affected children. A high percentage (up to 90%) of children suffering from the fetal alcohol syndrome have eye abnormalities, including malformation in the outer eye region, disorders of motility, and defects of different intraocular structures. Two kinds of malformations stand out as most typical--hypoplasia of the optic nervehead (up to 48%) and increased tortuosity of the retinal vessels, especially of the arteries (up to 49%). Visual acuity is often moderately or severel

Peters' anomaly: dominant inheritance in one pedigree and dextrocardia in another.

Two case reports are described to illustrate the unusual occurrence of dominant inheritance of Peters' anomaly and the concomitant occurrence of Peters' anomaly with colobomatous microphthalmos and dextrocardia. Studies of additional families are necessary to determine conclusively the pathogenesis, genetic mode of inheritance, ocular and systemic associated malformations, and proper management of this complex entity.
