Post-Trauma Cognitions and Anger: Considering the Effects of Elapsed Time Since Intimate Partner Violence.

Post-trauma anger is understudied in individuals who have experienced interpersonal trauma, although related work documents a curvilinear association between anger and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The current study aimed to explore whether the association between negative post-trauma cognitions about the self and about the world with anger (expressed inward and expressed outward) increased with greater elapsed time since trauma. The sample included 119 women who experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Moderation analyses were conducted separately for each type of negative c

Counterfactual thinking within the first year after sexual assault: examining associations with posttraumatic stress reactions in the (Norwegian) TRUST-study.

Background: Counterfactual thinking (CFT), involves mental simulations of alternative outcomes to past events (e.g. 'What if … ' or 'If only … '), and is commonly observed after trauma. While CFT can be adaptive, it is also linked to psychological distress, including posttraumatic stress reactions (PTSR).Objective: The present study aims to examine the relationship between the frequency and vividness of upward and downward counterfactual thoughts and PTSR, in the recent aftermath of sexual assault (SA).Method: The sample consisted of 327 women who had experienced SA within the last year. PTSR

Hippocampal transcriptome-wide association analysis of shared genetic risks between posttraumatic stress disorder and Alzheimer's disease.

BackgroundThe etiopathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is puzzled by the heterogeneous nature of this neurodegenerative disorder. In recent years, clinical and basic research has accentuated a relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and AD risk. Despite several pathways related to neuroinflammation, metabolic disturbances, and stress, emerging evidence implicates genetic risks at the nexus of PTSD and AD. However, the shared susceptibility genes and potential polygenic overlap between the two conditions is relatively understudied.ObjectiveThis study aims to assess the sh

Mental health challenges associated with sickle cell disease and strategies to address them: Reflections from a community input panel.

Despite advances in treatment, the mental health challenges of individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) remain critically overlooked. Depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder disproportionately affect this population, yet mental health support is often inadequate or absent. This paper presents patient-driven insights into the psychological toll of SCD, emphasizing the urgent need for integrated care approaches that address both physical and mental health. By exploring barriers to mental health access, the impact of medical trauma, and strategies for resilience, we aim t

Exploring cardiac-related PTSD symptoms in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators: protocol for an open-label trial of written exposure therapy and qualitative study.

Introduction: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms develop in approximately 20% of individuals following a sudden, life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia and subsequent implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation. ICD-related PTSD symptoms are not only common but associated with adverse disease outcomes, and yet studies examining psychological treatments for these medically induced symptoms are rare. Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a brief and efficacious trauma-focused intervention for PTSD, but it has yet to be evaluated in individuals who developed PTSD symptoms follow

The role of the first interpersonal trauma exposure's developmental period on fear regulation processes among adult women.

Background: Interpersonal trauma is associated with a higher risk of developing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following trauma exposure. PTSD, which is more prevalent among women, is characterised by heightened fear and difficulties regulating it. Although fear regulation deficits in PTSD are well documented, considerable variability exists in how individuals learn and regulate fear. Brain regions involved in fear learning and regulation follow distinct developmental trajectories and are more sensitive to stress at certain timepoints. As exposure to severe stress (e.g. trau

Differential patterns of daily trauma-related avoidance among suicide attempters and non-attempters.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are highly comorbid with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), underscoring the need to better understand transdiagnostic factors that may contribute to both STBs and PTSD. One promising mechanism that may link PTSD and STBs is the proclivity to engage in avoidance-related behaviors. However, little research has examined how suicide attempt (SA) history may modulate the use of avoidance strategies among individuals with elevated PTSD symptoms. METHODS: Trauma-exposed participants with elevated PTSD symptoms (N = 96) were recruited to complete

Mental and Physical Health Correlates for Sexual Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration and Victimization: A Meta-Analysis.

Sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious, often overlooked, public health concern. Research examining correlates of sexual IPV perpetration and victimization is warranted to help assessment and intervention efforts. This study utilized the biopsychosocial model as a theoretical framework, highlighting the importance of examining mental and physical health correlates for sexual IPV. This meta-analysis used data from 168 articles, yielding 352 unique effect sizes, to calculate aggregate effect sizes for mental and physical health correlates for sexual IPV victimization and perpetratio

[Focus on the heart and psyche - an impressive case from the rehabilitation clinic].

Cardiovascular diseases rank among the leading causes of death worldwide. Patients with cardiovascular diseases often require lifelong follow-ups and medication. Psychological symptoms are prevalent in this population, and early recognition of such symptoms is crucial for improving the course of the cardiovascular disease. This case report presents the story of a patient with an aortic dissection whose diagnosis and necessary treatment were delayed. Subsequently, the patient experienced flashbacks, which consisted of negative experiences related to the cardiovascular disease and earlier trauma

Preliminary efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for children aged 1.5-8 years with PTSD: a multiple baseline experimental design (N = 19).

Background: Trauma exposure is common in (pre) school-aged children and around one-fifth of exposed children meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These symptoms can cause severe impairment to a child's functioning and, if left untreated, have negative long-term consequences. Therefore, there is an urgent need for effective treatment to reduce the acute and long-term effects of trauma. However, currently, there are no established empirically validated treatments for PTSD in young children. Objective: To assess the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing

Smoking as a Marker of Comorbid Vulnerability Among Persons with Probable Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Who Engage in Hazardous Drinking.

Background: Persons with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to those without evince high rates of hazardous drinking, or patterns of alcohol consumption that increase the risk for harmful consequences. One potential marker of vulnerability for PTSD-hazardous drinking comorbidity may be smoking behavior. Individuals with PTSD have a higher prevalence of smoking and smoke at higher rates. Smokers, compared to nonsmokers, are more apt to engage in hazardous alcohol use. Notably, there is a need to expand research on smoking in the context of PTSD and hazardous drinking to inform treatm

Mental health and psychosocial outcomes in survivors of severe cutaneous adverse reactions: a scoping review.

Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) are rare drug-induced eruptions, most notably Stevens-Johnson syndrome-toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS-TEN) and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS). Their psychological impact is increasingly recognized, with UK guidelines for SJS-TEN recommending psychological evaluation, and a continuing medical education review for DRESS recommending monitoring for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for 1 year. However, monitoring for adverse psychosocial outcomes has not been standardized. This scoping review ai

Posttraumatic belief in a dangerous world: Demographic and clinical correlates in a large-scale epidemiological study.

Cognitive distortions are thought to play a significant role in the etiology and maintenance of psychopathology. The belief in a dangerous world (BDW) is an important cognitive distortion that, along with other distortions, was recently included in formal diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Due to its grouping with other distortions, posttraumatic BDW has not been examined in large-scale epidemiological studies, though one recent survey assessed it in isolation. This methodological change provided a novel opportunity to empirically evaluate this cognitive distortion i

Neural evidence of implicit emotion regulation deficits: An explorative study of comparing PTSD with and without alcohol dependence.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified psychiatric comorbidity, including alcohol dependence (AD), as a significant factor in treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there is a lack of evidence on how best to treat comorbid PTSD and AD. Poor emotion regulation may be a key potential mechanism of PTSD and AD comorbidity. METHODS: Seventy-four participants (48 women and 26 men) include three groups: a healthy control group (HC group, N = 20), a PTSD without alcohol dependence group (PTSD without AD group, N = 36), and a PTSD with alcohol dependence group (PTSD with AD group, N = 18

Differential relations between breathing retraining, in vivo exposure, and imaginal exposure homework completion and treatment outcomes in veterans receiving prolonged exposure for PTSD.

OBJECTIVES: Limited research exists that outlines the predictive relevance of the treatment components of prolonged exposure (PE) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on PTSD and depression symptom outcomes. The goal of the present study was to investigate relations between participant completion of breathing retraining, in vivo exposure, and imaginal exposure exercises and symptom outcomes. METHODS: A total of 58 participants completed a trial of PE as part of a larger trial on peer involvement and treatment adherence. Diagnostic and self-report measures were completed throughout treatm

Health impacts of war: case studies of New Zealand veterans of the First World War.

AIM: Armed conflict remains a tragic feature of the modern world and so it is necessary to continue to study its health impacts. Even the study of historical conflicts is relevant given that certain health impacts are common to most wars e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: This study built on a previous quantitative analysis of a randomly selected group of 200 New Zealand veterans from the First World War (WWI). From this sample we selected 10 cases that illustrated particular themes around morbidity impacts. RESULTS: The theme of severity of impacts was illustrated with a

[Hospital frequency of non-epileptic psychogenic seizures in Bamako].

Diagnosing a non-epileptic seizure is difficult in the absence of a video electroencephalogram. The expert commission of the international league against epilepsy proposes a diagnostic approach allowing the diagnosis to be made according to a degree of certainty with or in the absence of a video electroencephalogram. Our objective was to determine the hospital frequency of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures in the absence of video-electroencephalogram. Using the outpatient registry, we identified patients followed for epilepsy with two normal interictal electroencephalographies, between Januar
