Laparoscopic Rectal Cancer Resection With Pelvic Autonomic Nerve Preservation in Males: A Prospective Single-Center Study.

BACKGROUND: PANP has been applied in laparoscopic radical rectal cancer resection, significantly reducing the incidence of genitourinary dys … rgical procedure, distance of tumor to AV, clinical TNM stage, nCRT, stoma, and completeness of the autonomic nervous system were risk factors of postoperative sexual dysfunction in univariate analysis; however, none of them was an independent risk factor in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: PANP in laparoscopic radical rectal resection effectively preserves sexual and …

Guillain-Barré syndrome following adalimumab treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Moderate-intensity endurance training causes increased parasympathetic activity while very intensive (extreme) exercise loads may lead to persistently elevated sympathetic tone in champion class athletes preparing for competitions. Exercise training loads used by regional class sportsmen are usually somewhat less intensive. AIM: To assess the changes in autonomic nervous system activity in a group of regional class runners during a long-term training cycle preparing them for competitions. METHODS: Twenty-four regional class runners (including 22 males) with a mean age of 24+/-4…

Rigiscan evaluation of specific nervous impairment in patients with diabetes and erectile disorders.

OBJECTIVE: A proposed new, minimally invasive, and painless method for studying impairment of the autonomic system of the penile region in t … abetes and without vascular diseases, the PTB evaluated by Rigiscan is related to impairment of the autonomic nervous system. A PTB value < 30 mm may be considered a useful, noninvasive marker in studying parasympathetic damage of the penile region.

A new methodology for quantification of alternatively spliced exons reveals a highly tissue-specific expression pattern of WNK1 isoforms.

Mutations in the WNK1 gene, encoding a serine-threonine kinase of the WNK (With No lysine (K)) family, have been implicated in two rare human diseases, Familial Hyperkalemic Hypertension (FHHt) and Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy type 2 (HSAN2). Alternative promoters give rise to a ubiquitous isoform, L-WNK1, and a kidney-specific isoform, KS-WNK1. Several other isoforms are generated through alternative splicing of exons 9, 11 and 12 but their precise tissue distribution is not known. Two additional exons, 8b and HSN2, involved in HSAN2, are thought to be specifically expressed in

Circadian dysfunction in the Q175 model of Huntington's disease: Network analysis.

Disturbances in sleep/wake cycle are a common complaint of individuals with Huntington's disease (HD) and are displayed by HD mouse models. … (CBT), reduced heart rate variability, and almost a complete failure of the sympathetic arm of the autonomic nervous system to function during the baroreceptor reflex. Mechanistically, the Q175 mouse model exhibits deficits in the neural output of the central circadian clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus along with an enhancement of at least one type of potassium current …

Knowledge of the dynamics and connectivity of inter … the expression of 22 genes across five organs, over a time span that encompassed the development of autonomic nervous system dysfunction and hypertension. We pursued a unique approach for identification of continuous-time models that jointly described the dynamics and structure of multi-organ networks by estimating a sparse subset of ∼12,000 possible gene regulatory inter …

Sildenafil acts on the central nervous system increasing sympathetic activity.

Sildenafil induces vasodilation and is used for treating erectile dysfunction. Although its influence on resting heart function appears to be minimal, recent studies suggest that sildenafil can increase sympathetic activity. We therefore tested whether sildenafil injected into the central nervous system alters the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system in conscious rats. The effect of sildenafil citrate injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle was evaluated in conscious rats by means of the recording of lumbar sympathetic nerve activity (LSNA), spectral analysis of systolic arteria

Cardiovascular vagosympathetic activity in rats with ventromedial hypothalamic obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Rats with ventromedial hypothalamic lesion (VMH) are massively obese with endogenous hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, low sympathetic activity, and high parasympathetic activity, which are likely to induce hypertension. The goal was to follow in this model the long-term hemodynamic changes and to investigate the role of autonomic nervous system and insulin resistance in these changes. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Heart rate and blood pressure were monitored for 12 weeks after operation using a telemetric system in VMH and sham rats. Plasma catecholamines and heart beta-adr…

Hostility, gender, and cardiac autonomic control.

OBJECTIVE: Although considerable evidence implicates hostility in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD), the pathogenic mechanisms remain poorly understood. We have developed a psychophysiological model that holds that altered autonomic nervous system function links psychological traits with CAD outcomes. In laboratory studies, stressors reduce high-frequency (HF) heart period variability, an index of cardiac vagal modulation. With ambulatory electrocardiographic recording, we demonstrated in a predominantly male sample that hostility was inversely associated with HF power, but only…

Paradoxical effect of sibutramine on autonomic cardiovascular regulation in obese hypertensive patients--sibutramine and blood pressure.

BACKGROUND: Sibutramine, a serotonin and norepinephrine transporter blocker, is a common adjunctive obesity treatment. Acute studies in healthy subjects suggested that an inhibitory central nervous mechanism might attenuate the peripheral stimulatory effect on the sympathetic nervous system. This notion has not been tested in overweight and obese patients. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, controlled clinical study in hypertensive patients with BMI > or = 27 to < 40 kg/m(2). After 4 week placebo run-in period patients were randomized to four different antihypertensive treatments or placebo.

Intermittent normobaric hypoxia at rest is associated with divergent cardiac autonomic trajectories in master cyclists.

PURPOSE: This randomized, participant-blinded, sham-controlled 2 × 2 crossover trial examined whether a 4-week intermittent normobaric hypoxia intervention performed at rest (IHNT; 12 sessions; FiO₂ ≈ 0.12) is associated with changes in indices of cardiac parasympathetic modulation in master cyclists. METHODS: Twenty-three master cyclists aged 50-60 years completed both IHNT and normoxic sham conditions across two periods with a 4-week washout. HRV was assessed from standardized supine morning recordings summarized as 7-day means at Baseline, Post-intervention, and Follow-up. Primary outcomes

A pattern-based heart rate variability approach in somatic symptom disorder: Evidence from the SOMA.SSD study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been proposed as a marker of autonomic dysfunction in somatic symptom disorder (SSD), but findings based on single parameters remain inconsistent. Pattern-based approaches may provide a more integrative characterization of autonomic regulation. METHODS: This study applied a four-pattern HRV classification (normal, low, relatively high sympathetic, relatively high vagal) in 148 patients with SSD from the SOMA.SSD cohort. Resting-state HRV was assessed using 5-min ECG recordings at baseline. Psychopathology (PHQ-15, PHQ-9, SSD-12) was assessed at bas

Empirical Evidence for the Developmental Origins of Autonomic Stress Regulation: An Attachment Account.

The quality of the developmental context is proposed to calibrate lifelong stress regulation. Integrating attachment theory with the adaptive calibration model, we tested whether adults exhibit distinct autonomic stress profiles and whether profile membership is associated with attachment security. Adults (N = 110; 57% female; MAge = 20.46 years) completed the attachment script assessment (ASA) while heart rate variability (HRV) and skin conductance level (SCL) were continuously recorded as indices of parasympathetic and sympathetic activity. Latent profile analysis (LPA) and K-Means clusterin

Melanocortin-4 Receptor Agonist Treatment of Hypothalamic Obesity in ROHHAD Syndrome.

ROHHAD (rapid-onset obesity with hypothalamic dysfunction, hypoventilation, and autonomic dysregulation) syndrome is a rare and complex pediatric condition marked by severe, early-onset hyperphagia and life-threatening obesity. For the past 2 years, we have been treating a boy, now aged 12 years, with ROHHAD syndrome. In light of the patient's progressive weight gain, intractable appetite, ventilator dependence, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and behavioral dysregulation, including aggressive outbursts posing significant risk to self and others, we initiated off-label

Effects of transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation on autonomic function in posttraumatic stress disorder and opioid use disorder.

The vagus nerve has branches that extend to the brain and a number of peripheral organs. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) affects autonomic function through enhancement of parasympathetic activity and suppression of sympathetic activity. Because of these effects VNS has a number of potential therapeutic applications. This review focuses on the effects of transcutaneous cervical VNS (tcVNS) on autonomic function in two stress-related psychiatric disorders that are characterized by increased sympathetic function, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and opioid use disorder (OUD). We have studied th
