Computer-aided design of the human aortic root.

The development of computer-based 3D models of the aortic root is one of the most important problems in constructing the prostheses for transcatheter aortic valve implantation. In the current study, we analyzed data from 117 patients with and without aortic valve disease and computed tomography data from 20 patients without aortic valvular diseases in order to estimate the average values of the diameter of the aortic annulus and other aortic root parameters. Based on these data, we developed a 3D model of human aortic root with unique geometry. Furthermore, in this study we show that by applyi

Theoretical efficacy of preventive measures for pathologic fracture after surgical removal of mandibular lesions based on a three-dimensional finite element analysis.

PURPOSE: Pathologic fracture of the mandible after removal of a lesion historically has been a clinical problem. The present study aimed to evaluate mandibular strength after removal of a lesion and to illustrate the theoretical efficacy of preventive measures against pathologic fracture based on a 3-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computed tomographic (CT)-based FE model of the mandible of a patient with a dentigerous cyst including a third molar was constructed. Using this model, the decrease of mandibular strength after virtual removal of the lesion was a

Immediate positioning of a definitive abutment versus repeated abutment replacements in post-extractive implants: 3-year follow-up of a randomised multicentre clinical trial.

PURPOSE: The aim of this randomised clinical trial was to evaluate the influence of restoration on marginal bone loss (MBL) using immediately definitive abutments (one abutment–one time concept) versus provisional abutments later replaced by definitive abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In three private clinics, 32 patients with 32 hopeless maxillary premolars were selected for post-extractive implant-supported immediate restoration and randomised to provisional abutment (PA) and definitive abutment (DA) groups, 16 sites in each group. After tooth extraction, 7 patients had to be excluded for

Composition of pellicles formed in vivo on tooth surfaces in different parts of the dentition, and in vitro on hydroxyapatite.

Saliva from the major salivary glands dominates different areas of the mouth. The parotid (PS) and submandibular/sublingual (SMS) saliva differ in their protein composition, and thus, the composition of pellicles formed in various parts of the dentition might vary. In this study, proteins incorporated in 60-min pellicles from the premolar and front regions of the mouths of 4 subjects were examined using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting using antibodies to amylase, albumin, IgA, parotid saliva agglutinin, low molecular weight SMS mucin (MG2) and prol

Agenesis of the upper lateral incisors: Study of an orthodontic population and clinical illustration.

In his daily practice, the orthodontist is regularly asked to treat patients with one or more missing teeth. Considering their functional and esthetic specificities, and the relatively high frequency of agenesia, our interest was to focus on the permanent lateral upper incisors. Our study, based on an orthodontic population including 1000 patients, shows that about 7.8% of these patients present agenesis of at least one permanent tooth (out of which 3.6% are agenesis of the upper lateral incisor). Treatment options for these cases are multiple with several decisional factors to consider: the s

Histologic study of a human immature permanent premolar with chronic apical abscess after revascularization/revitalization.

INTRODUCTION: Histologic studies of teeth from animal models of revascularization/revitalization are available; however, specimens from human studies are lacking. The nature of tissues formed in the canal of human revascularized/revitalized teeth was not well established. METHODS: An immature mandibular premolar with infected necrotic pulp and a chronic apical abscess was treated with revascularization/revitalization procedures. At both the 18-month and 2-year follow-up visits, radiographic examination showed complete resolution of the periapical lesion, narrowing of the root apex without roo

The effect of type of restoration on the stress field developed in terminal abutments with severely reduced periodontal support and coronal structure.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Periodontally compromised teeth (PCT) that serve as terminal abutments (TAs) are often challenging depending on the post-and-core treatment, the type of partial fixed dental prosthesis (PFDP), and the periodontal support. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical impact of 3 types of PFDP supported by cast post-and-cores on PCT serving as terminal abutments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 3-dimensional (3D) model of a human mandible was fabricated by using computed tomography (CT) images and parameterized in a computer-aided design (CAD) environme

Effect of crown to implant ratio and implant dimensions on periimplant stress of splinted implant-supported crowns: a finite element analysis.

PURPOSE: To assess the influence of different crown-implant (C/I) ratios and implant dimensions on periimplant stress in the partially edentulous posterior mandible by 3-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two implants were placed in the second premolar and first molar regions of the mandibular model. The implants were then splinted with a 2-unit fixed bridge. The influence of 3 parameters (C/I ratio, implant length, and implant diameter) on periimplant bone stress was then analyzed by using FEA. RESULTS: C/I ratios showed a direct relationship with periimplant

Maxillary posterior intrusion mechanics with mini-implant anchorage evaluated with the finite element method.

INTRODUCTION: The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of 3 maxillary posterior intrusion mechanics with mini-implant anchorage by using the finite element method. METHODS: Finite element models were generated by assembling the images obtained by computed tomography and a laser surface scanner. For each posterior dental segment, a 300-g force was applied and distributed to the mini-implants in proportion to their calculated root surface areas. RESULTS: The most balanced intrusion and the most uniform stress distribution were obtained by concurrent force applications from the vestib
